Chet had a chance to meet and play briefly with Jaco Pastorious formerly of Weather Report. Chet was pretty shocked at Jaco's overindulgences and was concerned for Jaco's well being. Coming from Chet that means something.
The best interview with Chet I've come across and he appears to be completely sober and lucid. I like that his mind was not polluted with pop music. He's pure jazz!
Okay, I know, this is going to be awkward - but as a non-US-citizen I wonder: Was it normal back then, that negroes talked normal, dressed normal? Or was Oscar Peterson just specially sophisticated? Not from the hood and all, not a "Bro"?
Gorgeous arrangement of a beautiful tune. Brubeck was a superb composer. However, I find his piano playing rather clunky. Paul Desmond's soloing is perfect.
I've had the privilege to see quite a few amazing pianists in performance, but of them all, Oscar amazed me the most, and remained thereafter a life-long hero.
Any interview with Chet is fascinating. Considering how bad his addiction was reportedly getting around this time in the late 70s, he looks fairly well here.
When a teenager, March, 1953, in Copenhagen, I had the thrill of attending a Jazz at the Phil. concert with Ella, Lester Young, Gene Krupa. Oscar, Hank Jones, Ray Brown, Barney Kessel, and Buddy Rich. My love of Oscar Peterson began that night. I saw him last in Seattle the year before he died. He was physically diminished, but musically on top of his fabulous self.
