Oil painting for beginners is for artists just starting to oil paint or have tried before and are looking for inspiration and how to paint landscapes. Here you'll find how to paint clouds, mountains, tress and other aspects of landscape oil painting.
The background is gessoed black. Then, I've applied midnight black and prussian blue. Then started highlighting with titanium white. I never do a full length video here on youtube. It's done wet on wet.
I gessoed twice with black gesso. No sanding. If you’re going to sand, do it outside with a mask like N 95. Thanks, lots of practice and play for the clouds.
I don't use pallet knife to draw in. I use brush to make the outline then I do the rest with pallet knife if I'm doing a pallet knife mountain. I do both brush and knife mountains
Do you have a video talking about which colors you used for the pallete and how much you desaturated to get this blue and how you created the background?
I don’t have a video for that. I used a black gessoed canvas, thin coat of Prussian blue and midnight black on the corners. There is no desaturation going on, use the blue and black sparingly. Every time you add white, start where you want the focus to be and work outwards.
Thank you for your tips! I am the beginner and there are a lot of questions about painting! When you do paint tree leaves , what kind of brush did you use? Brand name and size, please!!
Hello Miran, the brush is a bristle filbert #4 by Silver. It's a well-used brush, and it doesn't hold its shape. Perfect for leaves and grasses. Any brush that is a bristle brush will work too, you just have to practice and discover what kind of effects you can get with your particular brush.

Good one, but really want to know... How u frame your art works...must especially oil on canvas artworks. And, is it professional enough to remount oil on canvas flat on a board before framing .
Hello Joseph, I don't frame most of my paintings stretched on stretcher bars. But, usually, oil paintings that are stretched on stretcher bars (as we paint them) are then fitted into a frame. If you're painting on a canvas board then this is the same process. I think it's unnecessary to remount the canvas on a board as you can risk ripping the canvas on hard edges as it't tightened. I don't have much experience in this as I am not a framer. You can do a search on how to prepare a canvas for framing. If your canvas is rolled, without stretcher bars I would buy the appropriate size of stretcher bars at an art shop and stretch it and then take it to a frame shop for framing. Hope this helps. -Sanel
It is really amazing ! Thanks for the tips! And I really like more details like colors and brushes used in this picture! and Can I have more tips for the Sky & Clouds next time? Please!
Thanks you for showing a different way to do trees. I’m not a fan, of the fan brush. I can’t seem to ever get it right. I do a great background the make mud out of my trees.
You're welcome. It takes a bit of practice. The actual practice is in the underpainting (the first layer under the trees). I struggled with it too to the point where I would let the background (the first layer) dry completely and then paint my next layer over it, wet on dry. This is why oil painting is much more difficult than acrylics. But if you master managing your build up of layers, you can achieve great results. Use firm paint (highly pigmented oil paint) and not a lot of oil. And then just managing the paint application as well. A very small amount of paint goes a long way on your first initial layer. I'll be doing more videos and talking about this process. Thanks for your comment, it helps me know what artists are struggling with.
Wonderful painting my friend, oil painting is a lot of fun, I am glad I am not the only one that enjoys it , thanks for sharing and stay connected, big like 👍
Your welcome Rog. Thank you for following my channel. I'm just getting started with posting on YT. I have lots of painting footage to go through for the beginner oil painter. Please let me know what is your biggest struggle with oil painting or oil painting mountains . -Sanel
