Yes, it's sad. It's about the resistance to death, and the ultimate, primeval cry against it. And then the final acceptance. 'Do not go gentle into that night.'
Basically, the meaning is that time is not on our side, and to realize this and make the most of the time you have, when you have it. I very much enjoyed your reaction, and it it so cool to vicariously appreciate a young person's first listen to this timeless music. My older brother bought this album when it was released. I can still enjoy this music just as much today as I did way back then. Welcome to the experience of Pink Floyd, you are in for quite a journey!
this came out when i was nineteen or twenty, back in nineteen seventy one or two. back then it was about music that you could get wasted on and not spending time on the deeper lyrical meaning.. it was the MUSIC and where it took you while heavily medicated. and being wasted back then meant being zapped on drugs, not alcohol. alcohol was for straights. floyd was listened to only when you dropped acid, smoked hash or toked weed or ate MDA or PCP. i'm from canada.
It has taken me years to figure out. I think the whole song is 'life in one song', you come out screaming, and are loud for many years, and then as you get older, you don't need to scream anymore, but your experiences keep you strong, eventually you fade out into your neverending rest.
It's like going to Church, in a Rock sort of way. Pink Floyd IS a Religeous experience for me. It is so difficult for me to explain what happens to me with headphones on, listening to this album, among others of theirs. I still reccommend listening to the whole album, with a black light on and a good doobie. It will GRAB your soul.
I am a grandmother who has seen these guys live twice. I have been a super fan since 1981. My son and granddaughter love them. You really need to get in touch with their entire collection. Seeing them live is transforming. I am a trained guitarist from the age of 7. I love Martin. Be proud that they are from Great Britain. Canadian Grandma Lori. C.
