Hi, here are some references and elaborations :) 00:00 壁上观 refers to the idiom 作壁上观 which is derived from a historical story and originally meant 'overlooking a battle between two sides from atop a wall,'. Eventually it became a metaphor for watching from the sidelines without giving any help. Noted to have some derogatory meaning when used in a sentence. Now the song itself, the singer is a part of the team 一棵小葱 who focuses on traditional-inspired music. This song is described with the phrase 聆画为歌，乘乐舞梦敦煌 (listen to the paintings as a song, using music and dance to dream of Dunhuang). The whole song has a sort-of ... the feeling I get is that the song looks back at the long history of China, the prosperity that it has experienced represented by the Dunhuang murals. It goes into great length describing the brilliance of that time, and ends on a rather helpless note of how we are only bystanders to history. Like how the listener is taken on a journey of dancing among the gods and deities, surrounded by vibrant colours bringing back the glory of an empire long past, only to wake up and realise that we are all bystanders watching from the wall above as time clashes with these artefacts of the past. (Also, kinda expected but, loads of references to Buddhism so I'm not going explain every single one. I did my best to translate the terms across and will be noting those that are more vague) 00:55 - 01:06 'Over a thousand autumns have passed, but the yellow sand has never rubbed away nor caused to fade, the vivid colours of the Tang Dynasty'. 01:08 宫阙 refers to the palace where the emperor lives because there are twin watchtowers on the walls surrounding the complex called 双阙 and so the phrase 宫阙 is also used to refer to the palace. Here, I imagine those old, ancient structures and how shadows and light will dance and intertwine depending on the position of the light source. In that moment, you stand inside history and sort-of forget what year it is; 2024 or 439? Standing inside these physical manifestations of history, every shadow and light seem to be manifesting something greater. Whether they are truly there or not, you are allowed a glimpse of their splendour. 01:25 Huxuan Dance 胡旋舞 (or shortened to 胡舞) is a folk dance that was introduced to the Central Plains (birthplace of Chinese civilisation, think like native land of the Han Chinese) from the Western Regions. The dance has a distinct and cheerful rhythm and was popular during the Tang Dynasty. From what I found, the dance was introduced from smaller kingdoms in the west including 康国 (Kingdom of Kang)、史国 (Kingdom of Shi)、米国 (Kingdom of Mi), etc. These small kingdoms (totalling 15), during the Sui and Tang Dynasties, were located near the GuiShui River Basin AKA the Amu Darya. 01:33 诸天 is a Buddhist term referring to the guardian deities. So something like; 'accompanied by the stars that shine with the presence of the guardian deities.' 01:49 蒙尘 has multiple meanings; to be buried by wind and dust; beauty that has been buried by wind and dust; in ancient times, the emperor who has lost his thrown and fled. This lyric seems to be saying 'with this journey to Dunhuang, I am buried by wind and dust, but upon arrival I come upon this joyful feast and join with the spirits and deities inside the caves.' There are soo many metaphors. But originally, I interpreted it a bit wrong. But the line was so sad and pretty I just wanted to note it here; 'This time, going to a joyful feast for the beauty that has been buried by wind and dust'. It makes no sense grammatically or with how the song is sung, but I just imagined the line to be almost grieving for the art and history that has been buried by time. However, this wouldn't make sense with the rest of the lyrics (especially 00:55 - 01:06). 01:57 朱颜 refers to either a rosy and beautiful face; or a pleasant expression. It expresses intimacy and trust. Might be talking about the faces of the buddhas and spirits within the caves. 璀璨 comes from 《鲁灵光殿赋》by 王延寿 in the Han Dynasty. It describes the brilliance of pearls and jade (also used to describe people and other things); basically the kind of beauty found in light reflecting off the surface of jade and pearls, splendid and radiant but also a bit flamboyant with almost otherworldly beauty. There can be two ways to interpret this; 1. The faces painted and carved have lost their beauty through time; 'Rosy and beautiful faces change, how come the previous splendour of the cave paintings cannot be seen?' 2. (the way I chose to interpret it, mainly due to the lyric following this one) The rosy faces have changed, but how can we not see their previous splendour?; 'Rosy and beautiful faces change, how can we not see the former splendour of the cave paintings'. 02:05 The beauty of the murals and statues have changed, we are able to still see their former splendour. But even knowing that they are being whittled away by time, when we wake from our dream of the prosperous ages, we still become bystanders watching from above as they struggle against the winds and dust (metaphor for time?) Hi, here are some references and elaborations :) 00:31 红墙青瓦 literally means 'red walls, green/blue tiles', but this specifically refers to the walls and tiles used by the imperial family. So imagine the outer walls of the Forbidden City (red walls, yellow roof tiles). 01:10 苍狗 can refer to multiple things, but in this case, I think it refers to 白云苍狗 an idiom that first appeared in the Tang Dynasty poem 《可叹》by Du Fu. 白云 = white clouds 苍 = dark blue-ish colour 狗 = dog Refers to how clouds in the sky are white one moment, but in the next, becomes dark-coated dogs running across the sky. It's a metaphor for how the world is ever-changing, nothing ever stays the same. Hi, here are some references and elaborations :) 00:00 From what i can find, this song is mainly about the bitter life experienced by women during the Qing Dynasty and Republican era when women's status seem to have reached the lowest in Chinese history. 'Wordless Tombstone' refers to the fact that the names of female descendants aren't recorded in the family records, or on tombstones. The reasons I found for this (other than misogyny) are; women marry out and therefore count as a member of their husband's family rather than a part of their birth family; there is the belief that if a family tomb is inscribed the names of daughters and granddaughters, it means that the bloodline has ended. In fact, many women did not have names at all. Their family may have given them a 闺名 (similar to the 'little name' that Chinese people still practice, basically a childhood nickname used by family + close friends), but this is only used by those closest to them and aren't usually told to others. Before marriage, they are referred to by their position in the family (e.g third sister, third daughter, granddaughter, etc), or in outsider's eyes, Third Daughter of the Zhang Family, Wang Family's Little Daughter, etc. After marriage, they are referred to as Husband's Surname + Her Surname + 氏 (literally means 'family name'). So, 王赵氏 means the woman was born to a 赵 Zhao family and married into the 王 Wang family. 00:45 Red is the colour used for weddings and happy occasions; the character 喜 is used at weddings but are usually mirrored so that it forms a 'double happiness' 囍. 00:53 In families that care about their reputation, the woman would generally not leave her courtyard. So she marries over and she will stay within those walls for the rest of her life, locked in from four directions, caged by the earth and sky. 00:56 Three-inch golden lotus refers to foot binding. 01:00 'Soul is severed'; here is may refer to the fact that she passed or, this phrase is also used to refer to extreme sorrow to the the point that it feels like your soul has left your body. Coupled with the references to funeral and mourning (white = death, suona is an instrument used for both weddings and funerals), may be referring to the sadness that marriage brings to the woman. Like after she has done the rites, she exits the ancestral hall and feels sorrow for her situation and future to the point that it's as if her soul has been severed and the wedding celebration around her resembles a funeral. 1:04 Joss sticks here refers to the incense burnt to honour a family's ancestors, therefore, for the joss sticks to continue burning, there must still be descendants of the family to burn them. Basically, so that she can birth sons, her love and hatred are cut off by 'them' (her family, her husband's family, society in general, etc). 01:08 'Inscription of chastity' seems to refer to 贞节牌坊 Chastity Arches which are elaborate monuments built to honour a woman who has remained faithful to her husband by either not remarrying after his death, committing suic*de to accompany him, etc. and upholds the moral values of her time. However, the irony of this, and this ties in with the title of this song, these monuments that are erected to commemorate someone do not have their names on them. Instead, the two words 贞节 'chastity' are inscribed at the top and there appears to be a small inscription at the bottom detailing the family that the woman is from and the one she is married into. In ancient times, some noble and official's families even competed with each other using the number of chastity arches erected to women in their family, seeing it as a sign of achievement. As a result, many women were forced to remain widows or starved to death. 'In the next life, never again enter this mortal realm' might be a vow made by the woman, like she doesn't want to reincarnate into this world again. 01:11 无疾而终 is an idiom that means to end something without a special reason. It also means dying without illness, like a natural death due to old age. There might be some kind of symbolism going on since 残烛 refers to a dying candle, like the remnants of a candle about to go out. I would love a re-adaption of Journey to the West with a higher budget. Considering that the game is so popular and literally breaks records, I hope that it will become a reality.
I've only watched movies about Journey to the West and Wukong but just now started watching this show and this Wukong is by far my favorite. Even though this show is really old, the actors really brought their characters to life.
Even though the show is REALLY old, I found myself watching it a couple months ago (way before the game came out), and I thought the same. Really good at it.
Bro I am Asian and this show is really take time to flim,plus ther budget is very low this has became a classic for next whole generation but sadly kids these days might not enjoy it no more
