I’ve been fortunate to be able to support my family as a full-time artist for over a decade and I’m hoping to share my journey and knowledge with others so they can do the same. Maybe I’ll provide a little entertainment along the way as well.
I occasionally pick up a paint brush and work in color, but my true passion is working with charcoal and I love the classic and timeless look and feel of black and white. I've developed a unique process where I use charcoal on canvas. It allows me to create a final product that is more durable than traditional charcoal methods. I've always considered art to be an adventure and I'm constantly pushing my limits and working to try new things and improve.
I love creating art and I really enjoy seeing the pleasure others experience in viewing my artwork. I hope you enjoy following along. Thanks!!
Wow! What a masterpiece! I love it so much! Thank you for sharing your process, the results are so stunning! I am in love with your art. I will certainly give a try at charcoal on a canvas!
Joel, love your work and your videos! Thank you! One question- can you erase back to white or lift the charcoal after the acetone? And what about lifting after the first fixative ? Thanks a million . I gave a big piece on my easel and would hate to wreck it!!
IMPORTANT QUESTION: I'm a graphite portrait artist and desire to do my portraits on smooth gesso board, for archival purposes. Do you know if I can use your same sealing technique for my work?
Your work is sooooo dramatic and impactful. Thank you for sharing. Just a quick technical question, If you are working on an Ipad, how do you keep the screen from turning on and off every few minutes?
Hey Joel, This is Jimmy Smith art, I think it's showing up to you as Laura Smith, my wife. But anyway, Could you tell me what kind or what brand of white pencil that works best on on canvas charcoal drawings? Does pastel & chalk pencils work as good as charcoal pencils? Also how many times can you workable fix your canvas drawings. Some times I'll go 4 times, reckon that cool?
Awesome work Joel. I'm so inspired now. I am experimenting with acrylics just now and stumbled upon your video. I just need to find what I want to paint now, I'm dying to try this technique. Thank you. x
Subscribed because man, look at that art. I'm also interested in this sealing method in particular. Is the isolation coat a general acrylic medium layer, or is there something specific about the soft gel that makes it work?
Paint the fence, Daniel-San! Came here looking for the proper way to fix charcoal drawings; got a good solution for that, and also appreciated the fantastic art and the revelation of charcoal on canvas. I mean, I can't think why not, but it never occurred to me before...
Among the factors that you stated for the over hunting of the bison, one of which was the 'One less buffalo is one less Indian' program... they were trying to starve out the plains Natives. Very sad part of american history. They don't teach the important stuff in public schools.
Hi Joel. I just found your channel. Your work is amazing. I was wondering if you have to prepare a canvas to accept charcoal? Do you use a ground or does the canvas have enough tooth as is?
Hi Joel so so stocked I stumbled upon you!!! Love your work! I too love working with charcoal but have only done a couple of drawings thus far. Making a living from my passion would be amazing! I’d love to watch all your videos from start to finish on how you apply & work your charcoal/mediums. I love attention to detail & realism is definitely my style. Why I love your work so much! Can’t wait to watch your series of videos 🙏🏼😁 thank you from Australia Bridget
Absolutely beautiful! I’ve just been doing charcoal for a little while never thought I could I could get away with using acrylic ! Fantastic! I really enjoy your videos and never stop learning, Thank you!❤
Thanks for the explanation! I just now discovered your work on Instagram, and of course, the first reaction is a question instead of a compliment for your extraordinary art! (I'm a why girl. 🤷♀️) I am a poor excuse of a sketches, but my watercolors bring me joy. I hope your work brings you as much joy as I find in looking at all the wonderful animals you create. 💜
Watching you work , not only did I learn technique but I’ve also taken in a great sense of discipline , a pure sense of service , and the benefits of physical fitness . You are a great man ! And by the time I learn and start fully painting in charcoal I hope to become like you ! Full of Stoic sense of being mixed with discipline and creativity .if I wasn’t in Ethiopia I would have purchased a print !! But I hope that my honest heartfelt words become your currency.
Joel, you influenced me to switch to Charcoal on canvas I found it more practical and I got addicted to it. Greatly appreciate your insightful demonstrations. cheers man, your talent is unbelievable
do you have any issues with the varnish flattening the values? i tried using a matte varnish on a charcoal sketch to see what would happen and it felt like all the values got leveled out. i was using a few different materials so could be that too
I don’t know why I haven’t really done this before, but I came across your video when I had the thought to do more work with drawing all of CT he detail and glazing rather than predominantly painting a subject. I don’t want to limit myself to one particular style so I’m looking for variation. This is the first video I’ve found which was exactly what I was searching for, so thank you. How much more specific could I have gotten then by searching “detailed drawing under oil glazes”? 🫠
