I learned how to do the subtractive drawing a few months ago. I found it to be so easy to do portraits with that method. I might invest in the electric eraser. It looks like you can get more details with it. Thank you for your videos. They are very helpful.
Thank You Joel for sharing these videos. Ive seen the time it takes to just make the videos . Its alot of hard work and sooooo very much appreciated!!!! You inspire me and Im thankful for it. Im still in the process of doing smaller pieces. I have been blessed with a very nice studio and living month to month on low income it is a slow process. Hoping this month to set up a smooth serface wall to go big. QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR ACETONE FIXATIVE: Is this your own mixture or is this an already mixed product? If its yours can you please share reciepe? If its already mixed can you share the name of this product? Can you use this in the house?? Ive seen your video of you using a poly mixture. Its been awhile since ive watched it I will have to back track to that video again but I think you said you were in your garage doing that piece. Is you studio out in your Garage? I dont have that option of an out building to spray anything or poly. I use Spectra fix. Its odorless and safe to use in the house.( Im sure you know of this product but maybe someone reads this that doesnt) I pour it in a defuser spray bottle so theres no drips or large spits. Ive only used mixed media paper no canvas as of yet. Do you find the canvas to be more workable and longer lasting than the paper? Does the canvas go behind glass or is it pressented bare? So many questions but I dont want to take up your time. Thank you for your time!!! I will be rewatching your previous videos again. Too many videos leaves little time to work on a piece though. HAHA Thanks again !!! -Jill C.-❤ your art🎉😊
Hello again, Joel, I found Golden Isolation as well as Golden gloss gel used for isolation layer...which would you recommend? Also, since the Polymer satin varnish was discontinued my Google search shows Waterborne varnish as a replacement but only comes in gloss at this time. Is there anything else you would suggest? Thanks a bunch! God bless to your family and you ❤
How do you get such clean erase lines? I have to be doing something wrong. I love this method so much, I do really good on paper, but when I try to use the kneaded eraser or any eraser on canvas it barely erases. I have raw unprimed, unstretched canvas. I really want to draw on canvas, but it's not working out I don't understand what Im doing wrong. With the eraser I have to erase really hard and it leaves particles all over. In all the videos I see everyone uses the eraser softly. 😢
That piece is looking great, Joel. Can't wait for the finish. Quick question about the kneaded eraser: do you have trouble with them drying out? I've found after a lull period I'll return to find them rock hard! Should I be storing them a certain way? Making a rookie mistake here? Lol. Thanks, Troy
Thank you! I've never had that issue with a kneaded eraser. I'd wonder if it has to do with your local climate, but I'm in Utah where it's very dry. Maybe try a different brand?
@@JoelPilcherArt Yeah, I thought the same thing (N. Tx). But then I realized where you were (dry too), then thought to ask you. I'll give the brand switch a try. Thanks, Joel.
Hello Joel: After the brushing the canvas there did not seem to be any loss of detail. you use the eraser then the fixative then said you added more value and another layer of charcoal. Are you adding detail with a pencil or somehow adding value to the entire canvas. To my untrained eye every stage of your work looks beautifully finished. I'm trying to learn charcoal and it's not easy. My last try the eraser did not clean up and the was little detail. thanks, tom
Yes, after the step shown in this video I spray with acetone and fixative, then add another layer of charcoal using vine charcoal and charcoal powder. Then spray and another layer after that. I typically do very little erasing on the second and third layers. Hope that helps. Thanks!
Hi, nice to meet you.... I want to be like you, friend... I really like all your videos, bro, for me your videos are very interesting.... and I hope you can guide me so that my channel can also develop like your channel, bro. ...I'm waiting for your guidance, and thank you very much in advance
Hello. I would like to know if the canvas you use is primed with gesso or something else, or if it is the raw canvas. Thank you for your generosity in teaching us. Excuse my English, I am not fluent, so I used Google Translate to write this message. Greetings.
