Superman is ment to be a heroic man who is a god but wants to be a mortal in the most lovable way These years are different tho as Superman is evil, i mean if he Turned evil part way its fine but they don't play it correctly plus it goes out because it Completely Deny The True Superman everyone loves, He Is Hope Itself but making him Evil ruins Everything he should be

Y'know, now that I think about it, it makes perfect sense that Superman is the alter ego of Clark Kent, not the other way around, because remember what was it that Clark always said in the original TV show of the 40's when the great danger of an episode struck? "This looks like a job for *Superman.*" Kent dawns the identity of the Man of Steel only whenever it was nessecary for the situation at hand. Rarely, if ever to my knowledge and limited collection of OG superman episodes on DVD, did an episode start with Kent already in his Superman costume. Kent's almost always with Lois at the start, searching for that next big headline story for the Daily Planet, and similarly he's back with Lois at the very end of every episode, reading over the latest paper she published about the day being saved by Superman yet again. Something a lot of the relatively more modern superman shows, comics, or movies never show is just Clark being Clark Kent, just another journalist / editor at the Daily Planet working with his co-worker / job partner and friend Lois Lane, who grew up on a humble farm in rural America. I think in part the Justice League comics and TV shows are to blame for this relatively-speaking recent trend, as it basically set Clark Kent on the backseat and ended up making his alter-ego, Superman, his one, sole identity, and any mentioning of Clark's actual name in media has mostly become something of a "fun factoid for kids new to DC" rather than who he actually is as a character. Bare in mind, this is all coming from somebody who has predominantly been a Marvel fanboy and never seriously got into DC in contrast, so take everything spoken here with a perspectively appropriate measurement of salt.

I feel like it's hard to have a satisfying story about an "always, perfectly good" hero with no moral ambiguity because how do you actually WRITE such a character? Of course it was easy to do in comic books made for children where they had the inspirations for saturday morning cartoon villains who would be out there just "doing evil" in some form or another, usually stealing something or plotting to take over the city or world or whatever else, and framing their actions as evil so of course the "good" guy just stops them and is good. The end. But we've long outgrown such simple stories. We know the world is not actually black and white. We can't even agree on what IS good and what IS evil anymore. Just look at politics, you have Democrats saying Republicans are straight up evil, you have Republicans saying Democrats are straight up evil, everyone wants everyone else locked up in jail for perceived slights and perceived crimes. Unless we devolve back to saturday morning cartoon level of morality tales, how do we even define goodness as a virtue to aspire to? What does superman actually believe in? It's easy to say that he is GOOD and VIRTUOUS but people say the same thing about the christian god despite him literally murdering women and children directly and ordering others to do the same in his name. What is GOOD from the perspective of Superman? What are his tax policies? What are his immigration policies? What does he think about vaccines vs people who don't want to take them? We live in a complex world and it's impossible to frame ANYONE in a story grounded in reality as being objectively good because they've got to take moral stances on complex issues that seldom have an objectively "Good" aligned stance to take on any issue. Even concepts as simple as "Murder" are murky. It's easy to say "Murder is objectively evil and wrong" and I think almost everyone agrees with the SENTIMENT of that, however, people DRAMATICALLY disagree on what is defined as murder. Some people think abortion IS murder. Some people think that execution of criminals IS murder. Is Superman going to fight the police to protect convicted child murderers to stop them from being executed by the state because he believes execution is State Sanctioned Murder? This may sound like hyperbole or more political than it needs to be, but I disagree. As I said, simple stories of "evil man always evil and do evil thing, but get beat by good man who always good who always do good thing" is a childish way to look at the world and a boring way to write stories. If you want Story number #500 of the "Evil Lex Luthor" trying to take over the world and being stopped by the Good Superman, you don't really need modern movie adaptations of that because theres plenty of comic books to read up on it. People want more grounded stories that are more true to life, and life has grey areas, life has ambiguity, life has hard questions you have to ask yourself. Witcher 3 was a fantastic game full of all sorts of choices, but some of them were REALLY hard to make because some situations are just horrible no matter what you do, but you still have to make a choice, even if that choice is to do nothing, it's still making a choice. If Superman was in the Witcher 3, would he have released the spirit from the whispering hillock, not knowing what evils it might visit upon the land in the future and ensuring the baron's wife's death, in order to save a bunch of children's lives? Or would he destroy the spirit knowing that doing so would mean the death of a bunch of children? What is the Unambiguously GOOD answer there? Superman in modern media has complexity and depth that the OG superman lacked because the closer to the real world he is positioned, the more hard choices he has to make. Does he intervene in War? What if it is a war of genocide with one side committing war crimes against loads of innocents? At what point does it become more moral to simply overthrow every government on earth to put a stop to war and pointless deaths while simultaneously denying people's freedoms? Having superman explore these kinds of questions is far more interesting than watching Saturday Morning Cartoons. I think about Captain Planet sometimes and how stupid that show was. All of the pollution villains simply polluted the planet because they loved doing it, like they got some kind of sick, twisted pleasure from pollution and wanted to intentionally pollute the whole world. The reality is so much more complex because no one really WANTS to create pollution or destroy the environment intentionally. The real villains are literally EVERYONE. Every time you use electricity in your house, you're part of the problem. Every time you use your car, you're part of the problem. But to stop polluting, you'd have to give up cars and electricity, and everything that goes along with it. The best solution is to try to move toward less pollution causing alternatives, but even then, they always require natural resources that destroy the environment in other ways to acquire them. There ARE no easy answers. There ARE no simple solutions. Life is complex. Life is difficult. Good and Evil are not really real, it's all just a matter of perspective. One man's savior is another man's villain and vice versa. There is no such thing as a Good Superman. And if you want to write a story for live action, it has to be partly grounded in reality, otherwise it'll be so silly no one could take it seriously and would resemble more like Adam West's Batman. Moral ambiguity is a thing. If you want to die on the "Superman Wont Kill" hill, then what is the solution for someone like General Zod? What is the answer? When Supes was put in that scenario, what would YOUR version of Superman do? Because Zod was about to kill more innocents. Superman had no way of stopping him, short of killing him. Without some comic book level of bullshit macguffin like "Oh the phantom zone, we can just seal him away in it!" to completely sideskirt the issue entirely, how does YOUR "good" superman solve that problem? Because he either has to permanently stop Zod or let him go, knowing he'll keep killing people. Because to me, it sounds like your only solution is to never put the character in that situation in the first place.

What made Evil Superman interesting was the idea of a man who was always virtuous and on the side of justice, feeling enough is enough and choosing to side of with a different side. I still really like the first portrayals of this version of his character, like Injustice or Red Son (the original comic, I have not seen the movie) but nowadays its just oversaturated and not as interesting.

Injustice could’ve worked better then, say Superman still loses Lois , metropolis and all. But instead of a rage induced grief. Maybe a grief more in lines with depression , confusion and isolation. Then Have another character take this version of Superman and manipulate him into all of the actions he does. Still having Superman do what he believes is the right thing, still doing what’s wrong but not having him be a complete Villain. Maybe in the end Batman brings him back to the side of justice truth and the American way.

Genuienly, it slightly made sense in the beginning, like him being tricked into killing his wife and kid, but even then, the dictator stuff made no sense. You dont go from boy scout to Hitler in a single event. They don't even have him grieve. He just goes straight to fascism. Not to mention, they just have him go straight to killing whoever opposes him when it was something he considered a morally unjustifiable act. The best way I can describe Injustice Superman, is a clay statue. The clay was molded by the Kents for years, carefully sculpted and defined with beliefs and morals. And then when Injustice happens, its like someone left it under a heat lamp on full blast and melts away the character the Kents had made, leaving behind a lump that doesn't resemble anything Superman used to stand for.

No Wonder Your Opinion sucks. Why I Love Evil Superman. -Evil Superman is a Menace. -He doesn't care about humans(the most respectable thing about evil superman). Now Fanboys will says: No he should protect humans blah blah blah(even after 80 years they aren't bored with same crap), common dude when you crush ants do you feel anything? The same way evil superman feels about humans(absolutely nothing). - Evil Superman are much more interesting than normal superman. - Go and read a superman comic, you can literally predict good superman. You can do better. You are better than me Earth looks beautiful from(which is true) Humans have compassion,truth. honesty. -Humans are best species im entire universe which is absolutely wrong. - Good Superman is so predictable you will sleep reading his comic. - Honestly i love every version of superman but the evil version are much more interesting and unpredictable than good superman. Examples: Superboy Prime(My Favourite) Injustice Superman(My All Time Favorite) Lord Superman(He is least Favourite). Ultraman is the only superman who isn't my not Favourite at all but still i like him as an villain. Bro If you don't like evil superman than don't read evil superman comics ok. If you still read don't whine ok.

This phenomenon permeates all media these days. It's all just about spiteful, weaselly little bug people tearing down the beloved and sacred. And not just media, but culture in general. All that was good has to be portrayed as bad, otherwise people won't want to allow it to be replaced with a new, shittier world.

I find the most compelling of Superman stories are when his moralities are challenged and not just you know his good nature. Superman versus the elite is a fantastic story because the challenges Superman's very notion of never to kill or abuses powers for the greater good

I think part of the issue is as a society, people have stopped believing in, well, I don't want to say the concept of "good" but the idea that it always to balance out a great evil in someone or is only there for the convenience of another, and I'd argue that's why Superman is more important now than ever, to show that good is still real, it is great, it's not always perfect or invincible, but it's something worth believing in and worth fighting to protect and nurture in ourselves and others.

I think there are ways to explore a 'Superman' without making him evil. I really liked Jupiter's legacy with "The Utopian" facing how to uphold his beliefs in right and wrong with a more modern society, and why his values were still important, even if people viewed them as 'ineffective'.
@itsdantaylor
@itsdantaylor 4 дня назад
I was exposed to a 'evil' superman before it became more 'mainstream' in the cultural Zeitgeist with The Boys and Invincible and injustice. It was a book called Hero by Perry Moore (check it out) there it had that world's version of superman be the bad guy. I found it a interesting concept especially because these were 'regular' super heroes who were kind of outcasts having to band together to defeat said evil Superman. I just find these Evil Supermen to be too one note villains. Even the ones with a thread of nuance don't really seem to be deeper then the shallow end of a pool. I also don't like the WEIRD thing that crops up specifically WITH specifically evil Superman, where if there is a Evil Superman the MUST be a GOOD Lex Luthor? it seems to implicate that the ONLY reason lex is evil is because Superman is good and that just makes it almost seem like it's almost Superman's FAULT that Lex is evil when it is solely Lex's.

Christopher Reeves is, was, and always will be the ideal Superman on the big screen with The Animated Series Superman being the ideal Superman on the TV. I think something that Superman needs as a character is to always see, inspire, and try his best to bring out the best in people. His greatest strength isn't superhuman strength, the ability to fly, laser eyes, or any of that... it's his ability to inspire the good in people. Instead of turning a petty criminal in to the police, he does what a father would do to a child and brings the criminal back to the person they wronged and tells them to make what they did right and apologize. If somebody tries to shoot him, he doesn't immediately punch them, he smiles makes a quip about how they could hurt someone like that. Even when stopping a more serious crime, he should approach it like somebody who is trying to not only stop the crime from happening, but as somebody who cares about the person committing the crime. Even though they may have to go to jail for what they did, he still wants to understand them and help them not make the same mistake again. Superman isn't the one who needs to be morally complicated and gray... his villains need to be. His villains need to be the ones who do bad things for the right reasons so Superman can show/tell them that while their intentions may have been good, they went about trying to do good the wrong way. That's why Bizarro is such a great villain; he WANTS to do the right thing, but goes about doing it the wrong way. Instead of picking a cat out of a tree, he knocks down the tree. Instead of rescuing people in a burning building by going in and flying them to safety, he pours a rooftop water tower out onto the building resulting in people getting hurt by rushing water and steam. He gets frustrated when his efforts go wrong and he lashes out because he just doesn't get why his good intentions are met with anger and resentment. Lex Luthor is another great example of potential for moral complexity. Just look at Superman Red Son. That comic was so great because it inverted the dynamic between Lex and Superman perfectly. They both wanted to do right by humanity, they both wanted to end poverty, disease, war and famine. The twist was that it was Superman who was going about it the wrong way by trying to control everything people did so nothing bad would ever happen to them while Lex Luthor recognized that people need to be free.

My thoughts on it boil down to this: If you're gonna do an evil version of what Superman is, then it has to be an original character and not Superman. It never works for the original, but it works far better when you get stuff like Homelander or Omniman as opposed to "what if we made the big blue boy scout punch a hole through The Joker?" This is why New Adventures of Superman and Jack Quaid's take on him works for me. They recognize that fact.

I love how most examples of "evil superman" is Zack Snyder's version because I will never understand how someone who openly and vocaly resents comicbook superheroes could be put in charge of so many superheroes projects and not be expected to fuck it all up. It's telling how both Znyder fans (more like cultists considering how most of them talk) only really like his version of the superheroes he depicts for how they *aren't* like the source material or just straight up have never read the source material, often while trying to claim Znyder is more faithful than anyone else, when in reality it's just another dime-a-dozen edgy fanfic version the fandom has seen a million times by now. Fuck, it's to the point that as someone who's seen both versions of the JLA movie I think Joss Whedon's version was more faithful and far more accurate to the source material. The final fight against Stepenwolf is like something out of the old JLA cartoons. That's how bad Znyder's take is, it's making me side with fucking Joss Whedon! And I don't want that!
