I'm a consumer electronics repair technician specializing in audio and video gear with 30 years experience in the business. My shop did authorized warranty work for all the major American & Japanese manufacturers. I was troubleshooting this gear while most of it was still under factory warranty and long before its legacy was scattered across eBay. I closed my shop quite a few years ago when China started flooding the consumer market with low cost products that weren’t feasible to repair. I still do work from my garage for a few customers but mostly for my own personal projects and equipment. I’m a fanatic of 70's & 80's rock/hard rock so that type of music is featured in all my videos. **Disclaimer** I am not a professional camera operator, narrator or entertainer.
I just got one and it won’t show the pictures it has an antena on the thorp and I added mine also in the back and it still don’t work how can I fix it ?
Heyo! I have an issue with mine where the heads don’t even engage. The left side makes noise (if you use FF/RW it makes it but faster) and won’t engage the heads, while the right side makes no sound but doesn’t engage the heads at all. I’m thinking it’s either a belt or a broken gear. I can provide videos if you wish.
The 2 I have are VSX-D704S and VSX-524K. The 704 was repaired 3 months after purchase. About 5 years later all it does is blow the fuze. The 524 I bought used I had for 2 months. It was working fine until I hooked up a center speaker. It did have an issue where it would struggle to power on. Click on click off. 2 days after playing the center channel it turns on thencright off. I plan to repair both of these but im still in the learning process. Thats why I watch these videos.
I just love the face fwd cassette decks. Only ones I knew that did this was the 80’s and some 90’s Delco Electronics for GM before they moved it to a side slot system. But if this was a car stereo, Where do you install this? So many units here, this is more than a single or double din system
@@jackschissler255 Thanks for checking out the video! I believe this would have been marketed for vans back in the day as they had the overhead storage area that all the pieces could be custom mounted in.
hello! I have one of these at home, but it turns on and off after a few seconds, and it's scary looking at these multiple plates. any answer as to what the defect could be?
@@markc871 , remove the bottom cover and the mode switch is mounted around the cam gear, what issue are you having that you think is related to the mode switch?
@@luvradios when play is pressed the tape engages for a small time but then starts gathering on the right hand side because the right spindle isn’t taking it up.
@@markc871 the idler tire is bad, not the mode switch. Idler tire sits in the middle of the reels, you may be able to clean it if it isn’t too worn down.
@@euclidesortiz7766 , I cant help you but I bet ebay can: www.ebay.com/itm/166711322567?itmmeta=01J2FY2ZWBFS7TKH0NMVC7WC41&hash=item26d0c4e7c7:g:d1AAAOSwW0NmGcU6&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA4FPznCcGdM8r%2BruagJKcFsKfD21qlA0XgFu8XjrFNZk09%2BNfycBF3mR7XKOW%2BKL4KBmw%2B9nw0499PFs85Pc0KUwvU9q4PKs07ehg7T56hR0%2B9elfAdU5tuwbkkh7RWoBtaWa9fZRntHCUW1z2je2O6IHAiG%2B%2FsZF5LW13dqUbunDKYO0Lib6S7SfXxWb0HktVjsBoMjZUe4dg28P8q5susq4anSh8d2pJZah4AloEIZ3GZ1HKoeAk7qn4QNJPuAlLnfDnMjYWt68H4F6YQmfhgbJxbDnIp%2BE8xbKgIRGQRKI%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR6L-i_6TZA
I have one of these in my eBay cart at present and I’ve been dithering whether or not I should buy it. I’m also not sure if there is a light behind the cassette in the cassette well. For a person who hardly does any recording on cassettes anymore, would you suggest that I should buy it - it being a very “delicate” NAK and exceedingly difficult to service. At present I have a NAK CR2E and want to upgrade to a 3 head machine. Incidentally, a great, well-explained video.
The CR2 you have is a not a bad deck so if you don't do any/much recording the upgrade wouldn't be justified in my mind but its an awesome deck for sure and as I recall there is no lamp behind the reel drive cover. Thx for checking out the vid!
Hi Mark , I seen one of your replies and would like to know If you can repair the my 2 units and how much would it cost . I don't think I have quite the skill to get them up and running
I have 2 of these units and want to replace their batteries. I have one torn down and need to know where I can acquire the batteries . I've owned these for the past 18 yrs and have not seen any facts about them , nor repair info . And you dear sir thanks for what you have done to put this unit back into service . Any info where to get the batteries will be greatly appreciated , thanks . I also own a new in box car DSP unit, a new in box 12 disc changer, a new in box pull out am/fm cassette deck with the matching amp unit bracket , a new in box flush mount 3 way speaker set and a new in box door mount 3 inch speaker set. I love collecting any of this stuff I can get my hands on and they just keep getting almost impossible to find to purchase..... Panasonic only produced these for 1989 .
Frank, thx for checking out the video! You have some sweet pieces still in the box! lucky you man! The battery was bought on ebay: www.ebay.com/itm/234919189193
I used to sell JVC car stereos starting in the late 80s until about 2001. The KS-R150 was the lowest model that I kept in stock and I sold many of them. Thank you for the video.
Honestly, not much unless you rebuild it like I did with the one in this video, these are so old at this point pretty much count on replacing 90-100% of the capacitors and also some mechanical work.
Ive got 2 one had since 79-80 for my first stereo for my birthday. The other picked up at junk store.lived 2hrs from pitts airport and could here planes talking.. pretty cool. Blasted Judis Preist Headin out to the highway..neighbors all around loved me..
I rescued one just like this and I was hoping to resell it. Issue is that the tray doesn’t spin and the player itself doesn’t go into the rest position (maybe it has to do with the tray). Is it just a belt replacement?
Have a stack of factory Jeep Cherokee cassette players from 88-92 that need repairing. Did one repair myself by taking a good tape module out of a bad channel case and dropping it into a good left/right channel case. Need to know what is the cause of either the left or right channel going out in a couple of cases and one that has just slightly low volume with the vol knob maxed out. One has a high squeal thru speakers with no am/fm reception. The rest have faulty tape modules that will not draw the tape in and seat down in position. Can hear motor running. When you push tape in you have to pull tape out with needle nose pliers.
@@luvradios they were a little dirty but didn't solve my problem. I believe it may be a solder joint bc that channel was real static and popping I tapped it a couple times and now it's quiet.
Had to watch. Just got one at a church fundraiser sale. Along with many Scotch 215, 150 and 203. Of course I can’t take the genre, so lots of recording to do. Oh, and the deck works perfectly. Looks like I may have to look at a manual on hifi engine. Unless you are supposed to remove the take up reel to record on side two. It doesn’t do that on its own.
Hola mi amigo, Sabes cómo reiniciar de fabrica un reproductor CDP-308ESD Ya no quiere reproducir, solo apareció en el display "DISC MEMO". SABES COMO BORRAR ESTO?
I remember those. Quite nice tuner section. Good price/performance ratio too. Seems like the EQ-presets is set like I used to in my younger days - boosting bass & treble ;-)
I don’t really know as I haven’t seen a piece of “newer” audio equipment lol, I would guess that glue is probably long gone, replaced with something more modern.
Nice repair and maintenance. That brown glue is bad news. As you noted it is corrosive and can also become conductive. I did a Proton D940 repair video that involved brown glue and damaged components and odd behavior of the tuner because of the glue. Check out the Hakko FR-301 desoldering tool if you need that capability. I use it all the time and it is awesome, tips last forever.
Erik, thanks for checking out the video! The Denon one I had , you could reverse the pump and turn it into a hot air rework tool using a different tip and bypass cartridge, will the Hakko do this? (Just curious)
You are correct but since there were no blown fuses I was just looking for any abnormal current draw at the moment of turn on, if I had worked on the amp to get around this and bring the amp up slow I would have disconnected the primary of the main transformer from the startup circuit and fed it AC voltage direct bypassing the logic portion.
If your friend doesn't want it back, find a pair of Infinity RS6b speakers to combine with it. Then set it up somewhere in the house... Anyway, looks like a nice unit. Compares well to the Sony STR-AV910 from 1989-90, minus the surround channels and 30WPC extra that the Sony has.
I have almost this identical unit..one night after a hard day a drinking we had this at "11" all night long... Until we didn't. Now there is no sound. Well okay, if you have it at max you can hear the faint whisper of the music playing. Ideas? Nothing visually pooped out at me.
Informational, thanks. My PD-4350 from 1989 still works great but it has never been subjected to shipping, it's had an easy life as far as handling goes but has played many CDs.
Hey man, I’m having a specific problem with mine I was wondering if you had insight on it. When I turn on the radio (am or fm) the radio works for a few minutes before it simply goes quiet. No static. Nothing. Before it goes quiet it receives the signals extremely clear and loud, in stereo and all. Any thoughts?
Hi. I don't know if you will answer this but I have a fvh-990 and it does nothing when it gets power. It will pass power through it's passthrough but the machine does nothing. Not even the clock lights up. The fuse on the board is good. Could it be the regulator like the machine in the video?
