These are small Menhaden, also known as bunker or pogies. On Long Island we call them peanut bunker. When they grow to full size, their abundance attracts all kinds of gamefish, whales and sharks near our beaches.
You gave a good video but i would never ever buy those outfits you show when there are outfits being sold by well known makers and that's what i did saving myself $500. on a super outfit. So yea show us the alternatives out there.
Yes, you do. Fly lines are about 90 to 100 feet long, a good size fish like a striped bass, bluefish or false albacore can easily take more than that in a run. Backing extends your line and lets you play the fish. In most saltwater reels you can put 200+ yds of 20 - 30lb backing which for most situations is plenty. Good luck!
I don't know what you do for a living. But I can tell you that you have a gift. You should continue to make videos like these. Absolutely Amazing. Thank you.
I don't think you really realize how lucky you are to simply wade from a South Florida beach and catch bones like that. Where do you think you are, the Bahamas? lol
@@SergioDiazFishing you are welcome. Nice operators and guides are available here also for FF in the Llanos-Amazon and Magdalena Medio in the center of the country. Crazy fishing on the Pacific Ocean in Bahia Solano. Check RU-vid videos. Regards.
Thanks for the advice Been freshwater fly fishing on LI and upstate for years Just bought a saltwater fly rod and a reel is on the way See you out there!!!
This was maybe 2-4 miles outside San Carlos, hard to miss them with all the birds and boats chasing the Dorado. Hopefully this year it happens again and we'll be flying down as soon as we get the call 🤙
That's right, this happens to me all the time, bonefish, striped bass, when I cast into a school of fish, out of no where a small rat comes out and beats the lead fish!
RAW ! Cool DIY filming... Love the water/sky in the first fishing segment. Thanks-I needed that today with all this crap weather here in ny on the island.
Hey Tom, it depends on the fly, a small shrimp pattern I'll do very short, erratic strips and rod tip down to keep it from getting to high from the bottom. A crab fly which is heaver I'll make slow longer strips to imitate a crab moving along the bottom.
That's a good question. My expenses included airfare, hotel, transportation, and food. The total cost depends on the deals you can get for flights and hotels. I'd estimate I spent around $1,200, including food. But I might not have accounted for the cost of beers 😆
I fished both, but feel like ocean side was more productive at least for me and I prefer incoming tide, have your coffee well before so that you are ready to start looking for fish at the bottom. 😎
@@SergioDiazFishing thank you man. Can’t wait to try this, bones are on my bucket list. If you ever want to get on some big beach snook shoot me a message
i love bonefish fishing ... only 12 min drive to get to my fishing place here in socal and yes we have bone fish here all year round cortez sizes mostly 12 to 15 inch but ive caught one 21 inch ...super fun on a ultra light 6wt/7wt and ultra light spinning reel 1000/2000 size set up...
Socal as in Southern California? That's so cool dude, I've seen pictures of bonefish in the Sea of Cortez and the San Diego area, but I thought they were flukes and not something you could consistently target. Awesome!
san diego back bay flats, can see them tailing but they are very spooky but they are use to boats passing them under 10 to 15 to 20 foot but they will still spook away and mostly blind cast and very tricky to sight cast them thats why i use a inflatable boat with a trolling motor to get them.. and we have some good size halibuts up to over 40+ inchs..fun on the fly but if you hook up on a monster on 6wt/7wt you'll be in trouble fighting it but they dont run away they just go back the bottom and you mostly need a bigger set up rod with back bone to yank them off the bottom @@SergioDiazFishing
@@thatonebeone that sounds awesome, who knew! I was in San Diego for a week long conference and I spoke to a fishing guide I wanted to book, he never mentioned bonefish. Next time you visit NY let me know and we'll go fishing 🤙
Loved your video. The fly fishing in your video is very similar to what my friends and I experience in Western CT. We fish the mouth of the Housatonic River points all the way to Cape Cod. We also enjoy finding shad and fishing for them. We also dread, hook, and land sea robins. Great job on filming and catching Stripers on the Fly. Really enjoyed it.
Quick note: The reason behind losing the bluefish at 6:49 and 8:40 was initially due to targeting striped bass with a 15lb leader. Once I realized bluefish were present in the area, I promptly switched to 17lb wire leader, and it was on. 🤙
