This 1880s Italianate Victorian in historic Wheeling, WV was built by the Wilsons, loved by the Barnes, and is now being brought back to life by the McGregors. We hope you'll join us on this adventure saving and preserving the history of this special place.
Our renovation plan is to rehabilitate the house back to the state is was when the original owners lived there: the 1880s - 1940s and to have fun doing it. We would love it if you would consider joining our RU-vid family and subscribe to our channel so you don’t miss any of our uploads and follow along on our journey!
While not technically a 'restoration', it will fall within the guidelines of a 'Historic Preservation'.
@@ChaplineHouse it does “fit” there, but I think it makes that side of the room look crowded. The focal point of that wall should be the fireplace. That’s just my opinion.
The work that’s been done is amazing! The work that needs to be done looks daunting. I’m sure with your family’s care and love of restoring it will be a beautiful house once more.
Wow! Thanks for the tour! You have made so much progress! Well done! Never heard of a Pittsburgh toilet before. What does that mean? I see our intro lady’s painting upstairs. Should she not be in the parlour? I’ve forgotten her story… you did tell me in a previous video but I cannot seem to locate that comment. Love, love, love everything you have done so far! Kudos!
Well, you asked for one! The 'Pittsburg Potty' is just a toilet in the basement. They're not uncommon in the midwest, but they seem to be all over this part of Appalachia. There are several explanations for them. Most likely: If there's a backup in the drains, fixtures in the basement will overflow first, possibly preventing a problem in the house. Also, coal miners and steel workers in the area would come home, go in the basement door, and cleanup before entering the nicer parts of the house The painting of the lady is la Belle Hamilton. This is a print that was given to us by a descendent of the original owners of the house. She thought it had once hung in the house and should go back. We'll find the right place for it, once we start hanging things on the walls. Plaster can be difficult to secure things to, and we haven't added any picture rails yet. :)
@@ChaplineHouse ahhh the Pittsburgh potty! There should be one in every house! Here in Australia we rarely have basements though on my Mum and Dads’ farm as well as aunty Dorrie and Uncle Reg’s farm there was a place to clean up before coming inside. It will be lovely to see Lady Hamilton hanging one day although I do understand (about the plaster). Do you intend to have picture rails throughout the house? Those stairs are going to be a treat! Again, thank you! Love from Mez! South Australia 🇦🇺
Thanks for the overview. Looking good. Cannot believe how much you have done. Have you ever counted the doors? You are so fortunate to have the basement workshop. Kudos to you all. H
Thanks so much. We have not counted the doors. We have removed a few that were part of the duplex rehab in the 1940s. We know where the pocket doors must have been, but sadly, they're not there...
Love the parlor. The dinning room is gorgeous 🥰 I really like the wallpaper. The bathroom is coming along nicely. I agree the bedroom is very nice. Bedroom 1 is a good size room. The library is perfect ☺️. I love the diamond window, the 5th and 4th bedrooms are very nice too. A bathroom would be perfect. This is truly a Grand house, happy you're all working hard to restore it.❤
No, we have several others that we could make functional; you’ll need to keep watching our videos to find out As for this one, it was closed, and the hearth removed long ago. We think you’ll like what we’re going to do with this one
A wallpapered room looks very nice. Congratulations, wallpapering is not a simple task and even more so when you put wallpaper from one piece on the corners and side walls. I personally don't like wallpaper, but it's a great way to cover imperfections in the walls, this wallpaper has given the room a vibe, it fits perfectly here👌
Thanks! We have had some debates about wallpaper in the past, but this one was a unanimous winner. For us it’s all about the vibe. The walls underneath are repaired and smooth 😃
I grew up on a farm in the 1960’s. The house was built around 1874. As a Teenager, I helped my mom wallpaper all the rooms. None of the wall were straight. It was a real trip trying to get the paper on straight. Since then I’ve wallpapered a lot. In my adult home, I decorated in the Victorian style. Even in my 42 ft Motorhome, I Wall papered a wall to cover up some water damage from previous owner. I really enjoyed doing it. I really enjoy your channel. 💗
The House with Nobody In It by Joyce Kilmer Whenever I walk to Suffern along the Erie track I go by a poor old farmhouse with its shingles broken and black. I suppose I've passed it a hundred times, but I always stop for a minute And look at the house, the tragic house, the house with nobody in it. I never have seen a haunted house, but I hear there are such things; That they hold the talk of spirits, their mirth and sorrowings. I know this house isn't haunted, and I wish it were, I do; For it wouldn't be so lonely if it had a ghost or two. This house on the road to Suffern needs a dozen panes of glass, And somebody ought to weed the walk and take a scythe to the grass. It needs new paint and shingles, and the vines should be trimmed and tied; But what it needs the most of all is some people living inside. If I had a lot of money and all my debts were paid I'd put a gang of men to work with brush and saw and spade. I'd buy that place and fix it up the way it used to be And I'd find some people who wanted a home and give it to them free. Now, a new house standing empty, with staring window and door, Looks idle, perhaps, and foolish, like a hat on its block in the store. But there's nothing mournful about it; it cannot be sad and lone For the lack of something within it that it has never known. But a house that has done what a house should do, a house that has sheltered life, That has put its loving wooden arms around a man and his wife, A house that has echoed a baby's laugh and held up his stumbling feet, Is the saddest sight, when it's left alone, that ever your eyes could meet. So whenever I go to Suffern along the Erie track I never go by the empty house without stopping and looking back, Yet it hurts me to look at the crumbling roof and the shutters fallen apart, For I can't help thinking the poor old house is a house with a broken heart. This poem is in the public domain.
Thanks! The salmon color was chosen to go with the wallpaper that we have selected, but have not yet put on the walls. So, it may not stay that way. What do you think? Do you like it?
Our old house had a lot of repeats on keys. All the bedrooms had the same key, the two parlors had the same key, etc. we also found a few keys in the molding above the door. Stand in front of the door, reach up, see if theres a little space behind the molding. Natural place to put the key to keep the kids from locking the doors, but to not lose the keys! You can also buy blanks for skeleton keys. I think i got mine from VanDykes. Mark the blank with wax crayon, put it in the lock, and keep filing where the wax is rubbed away. Or take out the whole mortise and take it to the oldest locksmith shop you can find. If they dont have a key that kits, they will make you one! Great to see all the progress!❤
It's fascinating how keys can tell the story of a house! Thanks for sharing your experience, I love the idea of using wax crayon to mark the blanks. It sounds like you have some great tips for keeping everything organized! We do have many duplicates! We'll have to check the moldings to see if there's more. I foresee a future project in cleaning and restoring all of the mortise locks at some point
Glad you put this compilation together. It gives us an insight into a lot of work that went on behind the scenes before we came along. What a lovely family you are. It’s a joy to see you all working together! Are you currently living in the house? Would you mind giving us a full tour one day? I know that would mean a LOT of work but it would be amazing! Love you guys! Mez from South Australia.
Having done this type of restoration many times, (this piece looks Spanish) I applaud your attention to detail and safety. Using the mildest cleaner possible is always the way to go with these older pieces but the brush you were using looked really aggressive and rather coarse. I would recommend a brush with softer/smaller bristles that will get into tiny crevasses without risking scratching or removing some of the thinner finishes on future projects.
The house is in great condition considering it's age, especially since it was a rental. An owner's apartment? I hope you'll still be pulling down the walls that split this house into a duplex and returning it to its single family glory. I know you gotta do what makes it financially feasible but I'd hate to see the house turned back into some kind of rental.
We did. This video is a compilation of footage that we had from before we started the channel and/or stuff that just never fit the before-after narrative. TBH, it just seemed like it was too long since the last video, so I decided to put this together
When you buy an old house you have two options 1 you can do most of the work with your own hands, putting in a lot of work and time, or 2 you have a lot of money to hire companies that will do everything for you, but this will no longer bring such satisfaction. This house, is a real gem that has been preserved practically in its original condition, I envy that in many countries there are so many originally preserved buildings. In my country after World War 2 and after the era of communism, occupation by the Soviets for half a century, it is practically very difficult to find a house in original condition and then it is either very dilapidated (ruin) or costs a fortune. This bathtub on lion's legs is beautiful, I would very much like to have one, but just the original cast iron one. Once you finish the renovation, this house will be beautiful, and you, looking at it, will feel great pride that thanks to you it looks so great.
@@ChaplineHouse Yes, you have reason to be proud, you have already done a great deal, and the end result will be wonderful. The most important thing is that such a renovation is not just hard work, but fun and learning, and I'm glad that it makes you happy.
Glad you saved the sink. I had to laugh that it ( the sink that is) look’s surprised! Always enjoy your videos. I am living vicariously through ya’ll. God bless from Texas.
I apologize for the confusion! The pic was meant to grab attention, but I understand your disappointment. We opted to take out the tub in this bathroom and go with a shower. I hope you come back for more - in fact, we still have to do the upstairs bathroom. It does have a claw foot tub!
