Hi. May I ask you a question? I bought a Kork Kaoss Pad KP3+ an a Korg Manson with midi Screen. I think that I connected the Guitar with the KP3 + and the Axe FX II correctly. But I cannot use the Guitar as a Controller. I can play the guitar but the effect do I touch directly on the KP3+ Screen. Wenn I Play the guitar, so I can hear the sound, but the Midi Screen doesn't work. I'm probably setting the midi functions on the KP3+ incorrectly (channel or filter)..... I hope you find the time to give me an idea. Thank you in advance for your answer. Best regards. Beat
Hey! I'm not 100% sure that I understand what you're asking about. If your MIDI screen is not sending data to the kaoss pad, then make sure that your MIDI channels are the same.
@@michaelscarabino Thank you for answering! Sorry to bother you again. That's what I do not understand. Are you referring to the channelsettings between KP3+andAxe FX II?
Hi Michael, cool video ! At 19 minutes and 30 seconds you mentioned that you cannot go beyond preset 128. That’s not correct and I’d like to help you and others that might not know. Yesterday I tried to comment - For the very first time on RU-vid, by the way - but somehow, my comment got deleted. Maybe it’s too long, I don’t know. I tried several times. If you could help me post a comment, I’d be glad to help ^^ (Maybe this comment gets through as it’s not as long as my original comment)
Hello! Thank you for watching, and writing in! When I say that in the video, I'm referring to the ability to assign PC's/CC's. In all MIDI devices, and DAW's, you are limited to 0 to 128. Not to be confused with how many presets are available to use in the MMGT! From there, you could determine how you'd like to assign actions to which presets. I hope this gives some clarity to what I said.
@@michaelscarabino Hey cool. Thanks for the reply. I was under the impression that you were saying that you cannot load up more than the first 128 presets on your axe fx. If so I’m happy to say you’re wrong :) I’d be glad to help though :) The Midi standard specified from the beginning a “Bank Select” message (two actually). I’ll try posting my message again w/o links…maybe it’s the links that get my comment deleted ^^
@@michaelscarabino Glad i could help! So do you happen to know more about my question? Here it is again: Is there a way to externally control the EXPRESSION PEDAL of the MASTERMIND ? Say i have a second midi controller, that i want to use to remotely control the MASTERMIND. Say i have a ROLAND FC-200 with an integrated Expr. Pedal that i’d like to use and control whatever the MASTERMIND Expr. Pedal is assigned to. Do you know if this is possible for the MASTERMINDs ? In the manual i can only see a way of changing IA’s and PRESETs - basically what you’re explaining in your video :( Help is much appreciated !! BTW: Google „docs rjmmusic external-midi-control“ There you’ll find an explanation how to address the presets in the Mastermind…The concept is basically the same as in the Axe Fx. Only they want you to send CC#32 instead of CC#0. Interesting read.
Awesome and very helpful video. Question for you - what kind of cabling are you using for long stage runs? Using a long usb cable is obviously not great.. Are you using some kind of usb b to ethernet converter at the Mastermind GT and then running ethernet to the computer?
Thank you pal! Great question. So I actually do use long USB cables, however they're not extensions. We get these 35 ft and 65 ft cables in, depending on what we need them for will determine the length. I never experience any MIDI signal issues with the rig, nor any problems with Ableton automation commanding it either! You just have to ensure that the way you rack mount your connections are secure. For example, don't just fasten a MIO port to the floor of the rear of your rack (bad idea on my part in the past lol), get a rackmount patch bay that won't allow any dangling.
David, so, shortly after you posted your comment, turns out you were right. We did a production rehearsal, and for the first time ever I experienced automation failure! I talked to a touring tech I'm friends with, and learned that MIDI in fact does NOT send accurately after 15 ft in USB cables, I never knew that. So he introduced me to the concept you spoke of. Here's what I got in. You get a set of Cat 5 converters, one is a cat 5 to USB connector that's powered by your computer, and then the other is a USB hub that takes your MIDI devices, and sends to the computer receiver. I chose to get a 2t ft Cat 5 cable. And you can get one that goes for even longer. This way of connecting has made my life easier in ways I wouldn't have thought, and I have not had any glitches so far. Good call dude! I had no idea this was ever a problem!

Thank you! If the background music could be lowered it would be very helpful so that we can hear your information without volume competition. It would be REALLY nice to know how to create a RJM GT set up using pedals and and the rjm effect gizmo without a rack system. In others taking an exiting pedal board and converting to using the GT as the main switching board. Again Thank you!
Thank you! Sorry about the music, I get self conscious about videos of me talking lol. You can pretty much create that kind of rig doing the exact same setup methods demonstrated in this video. It would just look a little different. In all honesty, you might be better off getting the Mastermind PBC for that. That device runs the same kind of control that the GT does, AND it has loops in it for pedals. Its way more practical for real estate purposes on a board as well. However, not to say it can't be done with the GT, I've seen it! Good luck on your rig dude!
@@michaelscarabino Thank you for your timely response! I've looked at the PBC but the form factor and the lighted Scripts (HUGE PLUS) make the difference for me. Again, thank you!
I was wondering if you could upload a video or somethjng about how you plug the guitar and kaos pad in? Like does it need another cable and plug into the guitar for the pad? Does the pad then need to plugged into a midi or somethjng? It’d be great to see how the set up is
This is a bit off topic but I can't find any info on this. But can the xy pad of my KP3+ be controlled by a different midi controller? Via midi expression pedals, or the pitch and modulation wheel of a midi keyboard controller? the KP3 manual states that CC#12 controls the X and CC#13 controls Y
Interesting question! You could probably find a way to connect an expression pedal to assign it to certain CC values to control certain toggles on a KP. However I don't think it could control the actual touch pad. The movement of the pedal would not be able to control the motion of the kaoss pad action very well with demanded results. That's kind of ambitious, but if you accomplish that, share it!
Hi! Interested in the MIDI screen operation: are you stuck on a fixed CC for each axis, on can you reprogram them? Is there a way to change CC programming on the fly? Also: which is the direction along x and y axis? i.e bass strings to high strings = x increase, bridge to neck = y increase?
Thank for a thorough review. Regarding the XY pad - iiuc there is no way to switch the midi channel it controls? I read somewhere that these are always channel 12 and 13 and you need to adjust your pedals to expect Control Change messages on that channel? How does it work in a live setting between different songs? Clearly there is no time to reprogram the pedals, so are you limited to controlling 2 parameters across all your effects throughout a gig?
Hi Michael, a super useful video! Can you daisy-chain multiple MIDI devices to the XY Pad on the Manson? If so can you assign e.g. X axis to pitch from whammy and Y axis to one of Kaoss Pad's filters? Or if you can only control one device at a time, is there a way to switch between the two (Bellamy is known for using both Kaoss Pad and Whammy if I'm not mistaken). If you can control 2 devices at all, how do you switch between them? Do you assign devices to different MIDI channels? Can you control which channel you're sending the signal from your guitar?
Hey Marcin, thank you for watching, I'm glad that this video is helpful! So, that is a question that I get asked OFTEN. Its most likely that Matt has the Bluebell only routed to a whammy pedal for Break It To Me. Every other guitar with a MIDI screen goes to a KP2. As far as switching, I have thought of how I'd do it in the past, but it requires more costly accessories. I've personally never been interested in doing it, but I'm sure its possible.
That depends on how you currently have your rig setup. Check your speaker/amp levels, make sure that you have them turned up to a louder level to accommodate for KP2 signal.
This is the WIDI by CME. Unfortunately, it's been discontinued for years now... It's actually the same system that was used on The 2nd Law tour back in the day.
I bought one for someone I loved. Of course, it was overlooked (C stat guitarist? Really? She didn't have one) I'd already pushed my kindness too far. I gave her one lil thing to do, so it could be justified in the 3D world & she failed. (We have the same birthday. It's not too much to say happy birthday on our birthday!) I met her. She's east coast. Guess what Italian, NY guy! I'm learning how to play guitar on this same model. No one in my town in the local music scene has one of these..which is hilarious, bc I've been shooting for them for about 15 years. I did buy a Marshall Code 50 from a local musician. I have to learn all of it and I am super excited! Thank you for being available with your amazing knowledge!
You give a great detailed look at everything that goes into producing Matt's live sound (and obviously what goes into you replicating it) I love the HAARP rendition, and you nailed it! Also, 100% sure we were 2 feet apart at that NYC iHeart Radio 200-person set in 2015.
Thank you so much, I appreciate that! Haarp is the best, watching that CD as a kid made me want to be a musician. And NO WAY! Thats' crazy, what an awesome night that was too! Message me on insta!
Guitars like this usually outlive the electronics designed into them. There will eventually be used ones with broken touchscreens that are no longer available.
Thank you so much!! I'm happy that you like this cover. And that is called a slide! They're typically made of glass, mine is made of chrome. Try searching guitar slide, they're not expensive at all!
Super massive video! Wonder about program change of the pad. So the midi out from your guitar goes to the midi control board? And from there another cable to the kaoss pad? Containing both program change from the board and the XY info from guitar pad? Is that how you connected?
If you check out my full rig video, you'll see a better visual. But what I do is, the Kaoss Pad first sends to a MIDI Merger box so I can split the signal in order to receive commands from 2 devices. Input 1 receives from the guitar MIDI screen, and input 2 receives from the Mastermind GT.
I use Axe Fx III as my pre-amp and cab, and its the main hub of effects. And then I have a few stomps. I recommend watching my rig rundown video for a full overview. You can find it in my channel!
Great review. What's the neck like? Anything you can compare it to? Can't find any shop that stocks them to try it out. I love the wizard 2 neck from ibanez not a fan of big chunky necks thanks
Hey Chris, thank you very much!! If I had to compare the neck another guitar, I'd say that it feels like a Fender Tele, or even an Ibanez as far as grip is concerned. No matter what, very comfy. 🤘🏻
