For the past 30+ years I have been involved in graduate theological education, research and writing. Along the way I collected way too many degrees (Ph.D., Th.M., M.Div., B.A. and of course Kindergarten - where I learned everything I needed for life). I jumped into RU-vid when COVID 19 struck and decided to put down some roots here. The goal of this channel, is to engage 2000 years of biblical interpretation to gain new perspectives and insights into the Bible.
To take your reading of Scripture from decaf to a fully caffeinated experience.
At times, this channel will host videos from courses I teach on-line for Fuller Theological Seminary. You're welcome to join us.

Nice video. I rode the KT in October of 2017, on a catered tour. One correction: the state fair is in Sedalia, not Boonville. Might have the Cooper County fair in Boonville.
Fascinating! I had not considered the tremendous impact of how Tyndale had translated those five words. Your presentation is rich and thought provoking. On a lighter note, I could not help but marvel that, centuries later in our time, anyone could easily obtain and freely display a Tyndale Bible without any consequence whatsoever; I think that I'll get a copy and display it on the coffee table just because I can!
Thomas More: "Tyndale has reduced agape to the lude love between some worthlesd fellow and his mate" love is love I heard her say when itching for a date I looked for the exit before it was too late by Patrick the Catholic
thanks for a window into the protestant mind. Tyndale got killed for being like John the Baptist. More was correct in sticking with Jerome's meanings. Tyndale gave us "love is love"
I own the first edition NET in leather and a second edition in cloth. I got the diglot from Jamesdickson books in scotland. I also have a NET synopsis of the 4 gospels. I like the first edition most because the hebrew test is classical hebrew but the 2nd edition uses an ugly sans serif font that is nothing like the hebrew has looked for thousands of years, The NET notes are just magnificent. The 2nd edition also has drawn maps but the 1st has satelite photography
Few things in life are necessary. The software makes Bible study so much faster, easier, and in many instances deeper. It’s a tool to help you go deeper. It’s not for everyone. But a great innovation to take advantage of.
I have so many questions! I am wanting to do this ride this year, but don't know where to start. I guess my first question is, where is all your gear (tent, clothes, etc.)? What should I pack? I know lunches are on the trail, but what about diners? I live in Sedalia and have been wanting to do this ride for years! Great videos!
If this is your first ride I would suggest going with Big BAM on the KATY. They organize the trip for you and can answer all your questions. They also have different options - you can pack all your gear, have them transport your gear, have them set up a tent and put your gear in it at each camp, stay in a trailer, or go hotel to hotel. They give suggestions for where to eat for dinner and I just followed their advice and had great meals. Also I just post the first of 2 videos from our ride this June. We loved both the Octorber and June ride - one was just warmed than the other.
I have recently started using the NET Bible with full notes. I feel like I’ve been digging a foundation with a shovel and someone just gave me an excavator. The notes are so thorough and revealed items in the Scriptures that I never knew were there. An example is Psalm 48:2 which most translations which talks about Zion being in the north or the remote north. The Hebrew actually uses the phrase “the peaks of Zaphon”. In Hebrew Zaphon can be used as a generic reference to the N, however the NET Bible points out that Zaphon was actually considered a meeting place of the gods, similar to Mount Olympus in Greek mythology. That would have been entirely missed in every other Bible I consulted.
It is possible but i would bring some cash as some of the small shops only take cash. Lots of BnBs and small hotels along the trail - see Backwoods bike touring as they will shuttle your gear from hotel to hotel for you. The trail is well set up for all types of bike touring. We rode it in October of 23 and just did it this past June - new videos soon to come.
My puppy died a couple hours ago and I'm soooo sad, now I'm completely alone...he was very weak had a big tummy but ate and drank quiet good til the last day...he laid down and died very quietly in a minute he didn't struggle at all...💔😭💔😭💔 Please JESUS, take him to Heaven and keep him in your Loving Arms until you take me home💔💔💔❤️❤️❤️
My brother-in-law and I just rode a section of the Katy trail from Sedalia to Hermann, Mo this week (June 2024) and had the pleasure of meeting David Parris. He showed us his niffty little drone that he uses for some of the video. And about the Katy trail, he's right it is OBS. Riding the trail with all the folks from all over the country makes the ride an event everyone who can, should do. I had a heart attack 9 months ago and riding 140 miles in 3 days made me feel blessed to be alive. Thanks for the excellent video(s) and hope to meet you again some day.
I have missed seeing you! For some reason, I have not gotten reminders in my email, but I got one today! I need to go back and revisit what I have missed. Currently, two friends of mine and I are studying the book of Revelation.
Great video and jammed with info. Thanks for doing these. (Really hope your hand heals quickly..... nothing worse than slowing down your ability to make a coffee ;)
I know you made this video 3 years ago, but do you still recommend that ESB study Bible? I'm vacillating between that one and the NIV study Bible for my dad as a Father's Day gift.
I think so. We used ours and didn’t notice anyplace where we lost signal. I think it’s because the trail goes through an old town every 10 miles or so.
So glad I found this video! For some reason, I've had a recent interest in delving into the times and culture in which the New Testament was written. I've slowly been building a literary library of these types of books, and look forward to buying some of the ones you recommended! Thanks again!
Did you miss telling us the theological concept or lesson regarding Lydia’s conversion??? “Lydia's story offers several valuable lessons for believers today. Firstly, it reminds us that God can open our hearts to receive His truth, just as He did for Lydia. Secondly, it highlights the importance of using our resources, whether material or spiritual, to further the work of the gospel and support those who preach it.”
Just brilliant information. thanks Heaps. I've got Mounce and Vines and will now look to get the New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology, ed. Colin Brown due to your recommendations.
Thank you so much for your brilliant and refreshing explanation of the real intent of the Lord's Supper. It makes so much sense in the context of how the early believers shared their whole lives together as a truly spiritual community. "I came that you have life, and have it abundantly" Jesus said. - not a religion with religious rituals. You were very diplomatic and sensitive in sharing these truths, unlike my rather" radical" comments. But then also, I think that many people do not understand that Jesus was a "radical" in his ministry while on Earth, and that is why he debated with many of the highest religious leaders of his day, and actually "swore" at them in the vernacular of the day concerning their hypocrisy 😊
Did your question get cut off? Key thing to remember is that the ark was taken off by the Babylonians and not seen since then. So the Temple only had a space for it but no ark.
I use theWord 6 about 80% of the time, along with Logos 9 and Bible Analyzer 5.5. - My os is Windows 11. FEATURES: fast ; robust search (including regex & morphological + can search multiple translations) ; clipboard monitor (popup scripture in any app) ; flexible user interface ; modern resources available (some free , some paid) ; free modern Bibles (incl ESV [2001, 2011], LEB, BSB, HCSB, WEB, NET [limited notes]) + modestly-priced Bibles ; very active development ; active user forum ; many non-English Bibles ; tagged (Strong's, morphology) ; flexible Bible copy formats for pasting text into other apps ; platforms : Windows , Mac. Using theWord with Logseq (free knowledge management app for notetaking) makes for an effective and efficient Bible study environment. In Logseq, I can quickly access Bible verses and passages via theWord's clipboard monitor - using it to copy Bible text, add verses to theWord's verse lists, or navigate to verses in theWord. theWord also lets me copy Bible text into Logseq if I want it embedded in my notes. PS. Another free app - clipboard manager Ditto - eliminates the restriction of only having the last-copied text available from the clipboard. - That comes in handy a lot in my Bible studies.
