Cutting only the flange closest to the glass is necessary to remove a pivot shoe. Cutting both flanges will cause the tilt latches to jamb up when the sash is raised.
Replacing the pivot balance shoe - each one seems to be "tuned" to the weight of the sash. Too bad when I bought these windows (20 years ago) to know this so I would have been able to buy spares of the appropriate strength. These windows have never been working well. (the previous windows were 64 years old)
I pulled my old ones out circa 2003 cleaned the spiral with turpentine then sprayed into the black tube WD 40 and reinstalled them both after turning the spiral at least 15 times. The window will not stay up, it slams down like a guillotine.
You might be able to get by with wither using a (moving) heat gun to warm the vinyl enough to pry out, or just to cut into the far side of the track. If cutting only one track works, leave the room-side of the track uncut, so that the sash doesn't wiggle or want to fall in!

Dang. This video would've HELPED us if we found your video much sooner. We found your video the day we repaired our front vinyl window. Used wire clips and a utility knife.
I have the Truth single arm operator in my condo (awning style, narrow windows) and the arm is detached from the window. Is it possible to reattach the arm to the window? I can see a button on the end of the arm, and it looks like it should slip into the clip that slides along the window.
This commentary is not very clear to my mind. The sash window height is one thing but the height of the sash window frame is important as well. How about the top sash.
I saw your video of replacement screens fiberglass it was very informative and I appreciate the professionalism and expertise of your knowledge but you didn't put a removal strap that could be put into the frame so it could be easily removed can you please inform me of a new video with that application I thank you again MC in fort Lauderdale Florida
Well I wanna know what happens when the window falls so now I can't seem to lift the top window cause it is heavy what do I do about repairing it top window fell on the bottom window and neither win the world work and I can't seem to pull out does bottom window Because it's out win the won't let me
My balances are integrated into the sash and there aren't any take out clips. The strings are however anchored into the window frame channel. What do you call this type of balance mechanism? I:m trying to figure out how to repair. Thanks 🙏👍
I have two windows that are missing the block and tackle balances. I have 2 balances that were left near the windows that I believe are still good. I tried to replace them; however, there doesn't seem to be a take-out clip near the top of the window. The closest I have found is a plug in a hole about 3/4 to 1 inch long about 6 inches above the hole that the hook goes into. I am confused on what to do as I can't seem to find any videos without the take-out clip to stop the balance at the top. Can you help me?
vice grips will scratch up the window frame also some need to be tensioned clockwise, some counter-clockwise, it goes the direction it wants to turn as you lift it.
I would never use vice grips to hold the window in place. Vice grips would damage the aluminum. If you look at the video when he's doing the second side you can see scratch marks on the other side from using the vice grips. I would recomend using a long piece of wood under the window.
