It's a really nice build and I know I'm late to the party but, I want to express my concern for the choice of power supply, as I saw no one in the comments mention it at all. With Socket A/462, you have to make sure your PSU supports a high load on the 5V rail, because these CPUs draw most of their power through the 5V rail. It's pretty specific to that generation of Athlons since 486/early Pentium era. Most PSUs back in the days could support load of 250-300W (and even more) on the 5V rail, while most newer PSUs usually top at 120-ish watts. Other than that, that's a really neat retro rig 👌 Great video ! :)

Seeing this video really reminds me of my past.. Even though I didn't own the exact same netbook, it's one of my most important memories of my childhood because it's the very first windows gadget I owned, my dad gave it to me xD it's an acer model though, with intel atom and a GMA gpu (forgot the details). I used to play a lot of trial games included in the laptop, like Jewel Quest, and packs of modern (at that time) mini-games by Gamehouse. I also recorded NFSMW 2005 on it, and I still wonder how can I survive the crazy fps drops xD ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bToGWxlsP4k.html

Great video - thanks for that first. Well, today I found one example of these rare beasts in the basement of an old house. Sadly not complete, but with the case and the printer. No original power connector, and no floppy disks... And it smells like what you expect from a not perfekt dry basement... 😢 Lets see. It is way too nice to end in the recycling bin! Greetings from Austria! 🇦🇹

I just fixed one of these that my sis used back in middle school. Its an 07 modle of the aspire one net book. The best thing acer did was take this model, and make it easier to repair. To get to almost everything, besides the ram stick i believe, i just undo a screw and pop the cover off. I have one running a different version of windows that wasnt half as good as the one in the video though. I hated it even as a kid. It was so slow. But its going to get modded and turned into a retro gaming station. Just wanted to give a little update after 2 weeks of using my xp aspireone. It is extremely capable compared to what i remember my windows 7 (starter) aspire one. I have a few games installed, most of which are low strain, but i have managed to make morrowind work and have played it a bit. Its running a solid 40fps on the little guy, with low graphics granted. I'll be adding and using this thing more in the future. Now im on to my windows 7 dumpster fire of a laptop.

What is the "most-modern" OS this Aspire One can get? I used to have this one way waaay back in 2007 (I think) Im thinking of re-buy it in eBay for the nostalgia... but if the browsing experience is this slow I rather not... that's why I was wondering maybe an Ubuntu distro thta supports more recent browsers... or maybe Win 10 (LOL I don't think so).... ?

Ethernet with a Xircom PE3?! 🙀640K RAM upgrade?! 🙀 Internal modem to use as a terminal communications port?! 🙀 External CF-IDE with something like XT-IDE using the expansion snap on?! 🙀 or using the LPT ZIP 100 Drive as an external storage drive?! 🙀. then having one card or disk with Win 2.11, another with Windows 3.0, and another another with ELKS Linux for 8088?! 🙀 And using modern Linux over Ethernet to do something cool?! (SSH still a work in progress) 🙀 Backlit-LCD upgrade?! 🙀 Anyway there are a lot of cool expansions you can do still, and would love to see how Windows 3.0 works without the 8087, and with this particular monitor… especially with the GUI versions of Word and Works and other productivity programs from that area. Was Visual Basic available for Windows 3.0?

2:15 - Seriously? Take the whole thing apart? My Acer Aspire One D150-1Bb must be a later and improved model, the RAM and HDD are each accessible by a single cover underneath. Likely newer because mine came with 1GB on board, replaced with a 2GB DDR2 stick. 5:35 - I tried installing Linux (various 32bit versions) and nothing worked. I'm putting ArcaOS (OS/2 descendant) on mine to run OS/2 and Lose 3.11 applications. For fun, not productivity, and offline only.

I had one new and still have it. While watching I dug it out of my storage to check out and see what it needs to run again. Looks like I'll need a power cord and battery and possibly a ram upgrade. Pretty sure I maxed it out back in the day, but it was probably slow ram so yeah... Being a broke teenager you do what you gotta do to have fun lol. So with operating systems, check out Linpus Linux, one of the options available when it was new. It sucks, but it's an interesting OS. It was trying to be like Chrome OS but in ALL the wrong ways. I'm pretty sure that one was locked down and needed a workaround to gain root access to use it like a normal OS. Next up would be make it a Hackintosh. I personally used the Kalyway OS X installer burnt to a disc using a usb disc drive and it ran quite well. It was faster than XP and useable for day to day tasks, while looking more attractive on the lower resolution screen. If you do, just know the stock wifi card won't work. Don't quote me on this part, but if I'm remembering correctly, you'd need a Broadcom card that went in Macbooks of the time. The stock one isn't even recognized in OS X. There were PC equivalents so it's a cheap upgrade, but a must if you want to daily drive it. Next up is Puppy Linux. I ran 4.2.something or other on it and it was speedy. I also got FreeBSD going on it, although I don't remember if that was a pull my hair out install or a good experience, so ymmv. You could likely use most of the lightweight Linux and Unix OS's from the late 2000s. I jumped over to Android doing dev stuff for Lenovo so I likely missed out on some flavors that ran well on the ZG5 once it was out for a while. Now this is going to make me sound old, but to get around the touchpad being made for gnomes, I got a wireless trackball from Logitech. I know most don't like trackball mice, but it makes the netbook so much more useable on the go. Anyway, I generally carried mine everywhere to do dev stuff, toy around in Acid Pro making my own techno, and write out horror stories. Any of those OS's would work well for you and I'd love to see an update video with it showing different flavors to see which is the best for it in the modern day. Not to ramble and turn this into a novel of a comment, but back then I was using a Gateway Solo 2500 with a Pentium 2 as my daily driver running a restoration shop. Making use of 10, 20, and even 30 year old computers is a blast and can be a fun and enjoyable way to help people out that can't afford a computer. I'd gather up laptops at the dump out of one of the dumpsters, if I didn't get caught, and fix them up and give them to people that needed to use email for something but didn't need a $500+ computer and didn't know the first thing about them. If you need any help or advice with it, feel free to hit me up!

Great video! I am doing something similar at the moment with the successor to the Hand386, the Pocket386 (exactly the same hardware, just in the Book8088 form factor). However, I have come across an issue with Windows 3.11 (not Windows for Workgroups 3.11) that I am hoping you could shed some light on. I cannot find ANY mouse driver that works with either the built in mouse emulation via Mkeys of the Pocket386 (I don't believe this is present on the original Hand386) or, more importantly, a PS2 mouse plugged into the PS2 mouse/keyboard/VGA breakout module (which is identical to the Hand386 version). Cutemouse finds both mouse options in DOS and works perfectly, but I have tried every Windows 3.1 mouse driver and nothing finds either mouse option in Windows 3.11. Any suggestions?

I have the same model (which I bought in 2011) and there's lots of nostalgia for me with it hence why I still use it, albeit as a notebook if I wanna sit in the kitchen for example. Emails / Browsing all okay if you stick with Win 7. I also upgraded to an SSD drive and 8 gig ram (max supported unfortunately). I've had to replace the keyboard twice since I got it in 2010 as they are prone to dying. Overheating is always an issue with these machines although I think I just need to clean the fans etc which I'm planning to do soon. You can also buy wraps for them on a popular auction website which will make the case look better (you probably knew that). The touchpad for me is the worst part of the system. It's pretty poor and fades very quickly. I don't know if you can replace them.

Have 2 of them, T3100 and T3100e, T3100 is more difficult to upgrade as it uses MFM disks, and the original Coner disks are all but reliable. The T3100e has IDE 40 pins, that can be replaced with a CF to IDE card BUT as the BIOS supports only 2 types of disks (20 and 40MB), you need to use ontrack or another disk manager to force the CF disk, it supports natively up to 500MB cards but can also use LBA disk with a trick. The problem as larger the disk is, as slower commands requiring disk size calculation are slower (dir, NC, msd, tree, ...), 200 or 500MB are the ideal option as the system works normally except "dir" takes up to 2 seconds to display disk details, with larger disks, some software just don't start, not sure it's because of the space calculation too slow or the disk too fast. The DD 720 FD can also be replaced by a HD 1.44 without problem. Win 3.x works well in 640x200 or 640x400 , PCGEOS too. all in all, for its time it's a very capable machine, its only drawbacks are MFM connector on T3100 and proprietary RAM and ISA connectors, but it was the rules on the 80s. The best OS, is DOS 5.0, 6.2x works but has no plus value on this 286 machine.

For newer stuff, the VCR does the heavy lifting. It can take composite av and put it through its RF output.
