This is amazing what you are doing to this chateau. However, I don't always watch this show as it rarely shows much of the inside of the chateau.
День назад
Thank you for your message. Please understand our journey. Before we can extensively restore the interior of the chateau, we must make it watertight. That means completing the roof restoration as our highest priority. Restoring the rook requires an enormous amount of scaffolding. The scaffolding is the single largest expense for the restoration of the chateau exteriors. That means that at the same time as doing the roof it was necessary to also restore the chateau's immense facades (as the various trades can use the same platform for multiple elements of the project). So, during this phase of the works the focus is on the chateau's exterior. You would see from our videos that there is work (wall paper hanging, painting, plastering,, electricals and plumbing) occurring inside the chateau. But the focus at the moment is on the exteriors.

Thanks for your message. We have addressed the issue of the cost of the project in earlier videos, including the one entitled "How much is all this going to cost". To answer your specific question, yes we receive a grant from the French government which covers a percentage of the cost of the work on the heritage elements of the chateau restoration.

It's a dry moat. It was designed and constructed that way. There are windows and doors in the basement. If we filled it with water we would flood the chateau. So, no, we will not be filling it with water...

The Mysterious 3rd HaHa looking onto a ‘forest. The video is not terribly clear, but it looks to me that that patch of scrub trees on far side of HaHa #3 are a result of last left on maintained for, my best guess, at least 25 years, likely longer, perhaps 50 years. The size of the biggest tree I can discern over the HaHa is maybe 20 years old (that’s a guess, since I don’t know the species. So, assuming Im correct I recommend a good walkabout in that area to see if you can find a focal point out there - remnants of a gloriously big tree, a Folly, a fountain, a sculpture or something of interest 100 years ago. Of course w Nazi occupation, there’s no telling what might have been worth stealing and small enough to load in a truck. A sculpture, whether from antiquity or more contemporary might have sprouted legs. If a sculpture, it’s likely the base is still out there buried in years of dirt and debris. One of those metal detectors might help you find a clue. If I was there, that would be the project I’d raise my hand for!

You paid circa €750,000 for the chateau, are you working to a budget?
3 дня назад
Thanks for your question. Perhaps a better way to think about the overall restoration is to think of it as a series of smaller projects. It's not really possible to set a hard and fixed budget at the start of a heritage restoration. Some things cost vastly more than we imagined, while other things are best left untouched. Some things are legally required to be addressed (such as the septic tank system) while other elements leave us with a lot of choice over what level of investment we are willing to make (such as the heating system). We have finite savings (which we have committed to the project). We are generously supported by the French government and we have received several philanthropic grants. We are fundraising (with the release of our book 'Chateau Reawakening', Patreon, RU-vid etc). When we have a clear financial plan for funding a specific project we then proceed with that project. As our fundraising continues we are the able to proceed with further projects and so on. We have an overall masterplan and then more detailed plans for the stages that are underway or will commence shortly.

I noticed before when the Masons were placing stones, but there doesn’t seem to be any mortar used. Is it just because the stones are so heavy that they don’t need to be secured? And how do they get those metal rods out of the stone they used to lift them into place with? It looks like the roofers were reusing some old slate shingles, some of them just looked old (moss covered), am I wrong? I thought old slate tiles became porous after decades of exposure, and had to be replaced with new tiles. But slates on the other half of the roof all brand new. I must be missing something. Very exciting times!!😊
4 дня назад
Thanks for your questions. There is mortar placed between the stone pieces. In fact the keying marks that you can see on the non-visible sides of the stone as it is manoeuvred into place are cut in order to receive the mortar. But there is no mortar directly underneath the stone as it would serve very little purpose. Regarding the slate tiles, every slate tile is new. None are reused. They may have been a little dusty from the work of the stonemasons nearby. We're thrilled that you're following our journey!

I would hope that these master crafts men sign their names on the chateau roof, stone work, walls ,floors to be remembered for many generations to come. In our house, as we are remodelling we ask the workers to sign their name on the underside of the roof, baseboards, flooring. and cabinets.

It’s hard to believe the roof is so close to being done. That at one point sooner than later, the entire exterior facade will be watertight and only the interior will be in need of attention. Still a lot of work but a lot of pressure off, I can imagine. Every chateau really does have such unique features in looks and in its story to tell. And I’m learning so much from this one.

The roof looks amazing!👍👍👍so wonderful that you’ve been able to save these beautiful old buildings! Question, why did you not put thin bubble insulation behind the burlap ?
4 дня назад
Thanks for your message. The void behind the burlap is designed to protect the wall papers in these rooms by allowing air to circulate and prevent condensation. We are placing insulation in the floors (when we lift the floor boards) and in the roof (as the roof restoration proceeds). But we want to respect several of the original design features that protected wall coverings for two and half centuries.
