Beautiful work. The masonry work is a challenge for today's superb artisans. We can't imagine how the original artisans achieved such incredible work.

A question we reflect on all the time. We have the benefit of new technologies (hydraulic lifts, cranes, angle grinders etc). Our forebears did it all with traditional techniques... the mind boggles!

It’s extraordinary to think how the original builders managed such a project without the modern technology we have today. It’s wonderful to watch the progress!
25 дней назад
We ponder that exact question so often here. They used many of the techniques we still use today. But they manoeuvred those massive stone pieces without cranes or hydraulic lifts. Amazing! Thank you for following our journey.

Outstanding craftsmanship in recreating the busts! I'm surprised there are still sculptors that can and _will_ undertake such an immense task. I'm sure it came with quite a pricetag attached. Cudos to you also for the magnificent restorations you've completed so far. Once when the Chateau has been fully restored there's no doubt it will look incredible! Thanks for sharing 😊😊

It baffles me what an unexpected find these busts were. And the sort of anomaly of it all. It shouldn’t surprise me that chateaux had busts on their roofs, but my modern esprit just finds it so odd and, indeed, other-worldly. Then the mystery, be them dramatically French Revolution based or the simple subject of weather and age makes it all that much more profound. And each room coming together one at a time is another patient inspiration to the goals and plans I have set out for my own life.
25 дней назад
Thank you for your comment. Patient inspiration is a wonderful phrase. We've had to learn to be patient here at Purnon. When we first arrived we were in such a hurry to progress all our plans quickly. Our architect has taught us to slow down, ask questions, reflect and think carefully about how best to proceed. We have saved so much and learnt so much by proceeding in this way. The busts are perhaps a metaphor for our entire journey. When we first found them we hadn't a clue what we were really looking out. The mystery was patiently solved and the busts carefully restored. And now after several years, here they are, ready to return to the roof for which they were designed.

It always comes to me when I see the stonemasons lift those heavy blocks, how they did that in the past centuries. I mean, we know how they did it but they had none of the safety measures those gentleman now have, from helmets to steel cables.... it's incredible how people managed to build churches, castles, chateaus etc. with so little.

This is amazing what you are doing to this chateau. However, I don't always watch this show as it rarely shows much of the inside of the chateau.
День назад
Thank you for your message. Please understand our journey. Before we can extensively restore the interior of the chateau, we must make it watertight. That means completing the roof restoration as our highest priority. Restoring the rook requires an enormous amount of scaffolding. The scaffolding is the single largest expense for the restoration of the chateau exteriors. That means that at the same time as doing the roof it was necessary to also restore the chateau's immense facades (as the various trades can use the same platform for multiple elements of the project). So, during this phase of the works the focus is on the chateau's exterior. You would see from our videos that there is work (wall paper hanging, painting, plastering,, electricals and plumbing) occurring inside the chateau. But the focus at the moment is on the exteriors.

25 дней назад
Thank you for your message - we're thrilled to have them back! The cross on the chest of the bust of King Henri IV is the Order of the Holy Spirit (Ordre du Saint-Esprit). The George Cross is a British award created by King George VI in 1940.
@heliedecastanet1882
@heliedecastanet1882 24 дня назад
Unless I am wrong, the "Ordre du Saint Esprit" was created by king Henri III of France at the end of the XVI° century 😉
23 дня назад
That's correct. Henri III was concerned that previous orders had been issued a little too liberally and had been devalued, so he created the Ordre du Saint-Esprit. It was abolished during the Revolution, reinstated following the Restoration and then finally abolished after the July Revolution. Thanks for your message.

Thanks @katehobbs2008 spot on. Dan's wonderful chateau was built at the start of the 20th century by a Russian industrialist. Chateau de Purnon was built at the end of the 18th century and completed the year before the outbreak ion the French Revolution,. Thanks for following our adventure.

My question: was it ever clear considered to cast copies from the statues to be mounted at the original locations and keep the original inside as you intend to? I think it would look awesome to see the chateau in its true former glory! I truly admire your efforts to restore this historic building back into its former beauty!
26 дней назад
The statues that will be mounted on the roof are duplicates. This is necessary because so little remained of King Henri IV (just a fragment of the head) that he would have had to be rebuilt in any case. It also means that we can use a more durable stone than the soft tuffeau that was originally used. The restored originals (with a replica bust of King Henri IV) will be displayed in the interior of the chateau on pedestals as outlined in this video. So visitors to the chateau will see the kings mounted on the roof as originally constructed and also have the opportunity to admire them up close inside our home. Thank you for following our adventure!

Are you using lime mortar 11:10 in placing the new stone or repairing the old masonry?
25 дней назад
Thanks for your question. Yes, it's a lime-based mortar. The stone-masons are working on top of one of the newly-placed pediment stones laying the mortar that solidifies the joins. If you look closely during this sequence you can actually see the circular metal pin that is attached to the top of the stone piece that enables the pulley strap to be attached while it is being raised from the ground.

Easy for me to say... Is that Hessian burlap "original?" My nerdy mind goes to preservation and use new burlap. 🤔 What if they can X-ray that to find pigments. (See? I'm completely hooked on your project there!) Awesome y'all!!!♥️
26 дней назад
The burlap is original. When it comes loose, it is relatively simple to stretch it back and reattach it. But if it deteriorates significantly it is occasionally necessary to replace it entirely. We rarely do this. In the room featured in this video, that will not be necessary. Thanks for following our journey!
@blinkingmanchannel
@blinkingmanchannel 26 дней назад
So... Is all that weight transmitted to the ground by (essentially) a column of stone? Or is it wood holding up a facade of stone?
@katehobbs2008

Have you seen what young Edouard has done/is doing at Chateau de Vaux in Aube in Champagne? He started about 10 years ago with an equally awful mess, in a massive chateau of similar (I think) age and size. Purnon is slightly larger but Vaux is still very impressive. He has also been partly funded, to the tune of €1.5 M, by Monuments Historiques. You are travelling the same path, he is 5 or 6 years ahead of you with the facades completed, but still a long way to go.

In the USA when there is lead paint people hire specialists to remove it. Once that is done one can continue with the work

The product that we are using is from the US. It is called Smart Strip and it is from a company called Dumond based in Pennsylvania. It is a non-toxic product that is designed to be used by non-specialists. These demonstrations have featured in earlier videos. Thank you for your comment and for following our journey.

So cool to dig around and find all that stuff lying, I imagine, right where it was dropped the day they knocked it down. I'm a nerd, but I wonder if ☕️ ... anyone besides me would pay for a poster with all the owners and connections and politics in the history of the chateau? Like a family tree with asterisks or something.

A quick question, with the lead paint remover is there a way to see the different colors that the room was painted through the years ? Or is there another way ?

It depends which product we use. SmartStrip produce several variants with different levels of severity. Essentially you can strip back to the base surface or apply a more moderate intervention. We do a test patch before we begin and select the SmartStrip application which best suits our objectives. Thank you for following our journey!
