He didn't do it for the maintenance of slavery. HE NEVER OWNED A SLAVE and was completely against it. He chose his state because we were a "Union" of states. The civil war was about so much more than slavery. Yes, it was a stain our creator forced us to pay for, but study the politics of it. Study what Lincoln proposed before the war and you will see it was about much more than slavery. Shame someone who spent his life in this field, yet gets it all wrong. Truth matters.
Just read through a bunch of the comments below and am encouraged by the thought applied to most of these comments. Also encouraged at the number of folks who still find duty and importance of self-education. We are all in this together, black, white, north, south, etc. Our history, truth and faithfulness to one another is paramount.

There is no doubt that both Holmes and Brandeis would have read Mill. Mill's philosophy is clearly a source of many of the ideas expressed in the Whitney decision.
Pragmatism is inconsistent with "Rule of Law." The Legislative Branch is responsible for the design, development and maintenance and therefore the meaning of the Laws. SOTU using any other meaning constitutes 'legislating from the bench.' Doing that largely negates the self-correction and self-improvement mechanisms for our body of Laws, thereby doing more long term harm than any short term good it might do. SOTU is responsible for insisting that Congress resolve any ambiguities and conflicts in the body of Laws for which they are responsible i.e. SOTU needs to provide some basic Quality Assurance.

The Impeachment Process only relates to the House charging a President for "high crimes and misdemeanors" and the Senate decides whether a President is guilty or not guilty. A verdict of guilty takes 2/3rds of the Senate. However, a high crime and misdemeanor is "whatever a majority of the House says at a particular moment in history." Technically, a majority of the House with the concurrence of 2/3rds of the Senate, can define a "high crime" as littering to an official of the Executive Branch or The Judicial Branch. A President is immune from prosecution for things done, during his/her Presidency, while in office. However, a President is NOT immune from prosecution for actions done before taking office. Also, an Ex-President doesn't have "absolute immunity" from actions taken during his/her Presidency, unless a subsequent President issues a "blank pardon". B
Pres. Lincoln used the Right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness from the Declaration of Independence to justify his engaging in the Civil War to free the slaves. In the Fifth Amendment, the right to Life, Liberty, and Property under the law already existed. In the Declaration of Independence, these Rights are above the law-making ability of the government meaning to have the type of freedom that animals have in nature under Nature's God. So the 14th Amendment was an attempt to take away the freedom of blacks and reaffirm that they are nothing but property. This is very likely the reason that President Lincoln was assassinated because he would not have allowed this clause in the 14th Amendment.

14th amendment was written to give DC it's own citizens after the civil war, meaning, freed slaves now belong to the federal government citizens of DC to be exact. 14th does not apply to state citizens. Bill of rights does not apply to US citizens. State citizens were given the option to join us citizens on form SS5 line 5. When you get your SSN, you can chose state citizen or us citizen. Us citizenship means you lose the bill of rights. You now pay income tax to IRS, you become a resident of your state. You lose state citizenship. I think the art of discussion has been lost where people not only do not know how to engage in a discussion, they do not know the difference between a discussion and an argument. For those who understand these concepts, social media is a very valuable sampler of ideas and perspectives.
Lost ALL respect for Gen. McCrystal. The guy is pandering to the populist view about race. Gen.Lee fought for his State. He was totally against slavery, but after being offered to head up the union forces by Lincoln, he declined. He could not wage war against his home state. The war between the states was not fought primarily about slavery. The South wanted autonomy to run their collective states their way, and the north wanted inclusion. Much like today, Federal government trying to over reach into what shroud be state issues. Lee was a classic General in all respects. I am EXTREMELY disappointed in McCrystals decision to take down Lee's picture, and even more disappointed in him for letting his wife convince him....WIMP.
