Photography and Documentary Filmmaking, with an emphasis on creative vision and storytelling.

Landscape, travel and street photography and filmmaking is what you'll find on this channel. I particularly enjoy black and white photography.

I love exploring and hiking with a camera. I've been doing it for fun, and professionally, for over 30 years.

I do hope you'll join me!

- SImon Burn

NEW FOR 2024: I'm making a feature-length documentary film on the Camino de Santiago in Spain.

I have a Leica Q2M also and just love it. It really changes the way you look at things. Small things become subjects onto themselves. Just light and shadow becomes that more interesting. I do an hour exercise walk each morning and I have the Q2M with me. It really changes your thought pattern. BTW, I have a covered bridge about 30 minutes from me. Next time I go that way, I will make a slight detour and have fun doing a photo shoot.

Hey Chris, thanks for the comment, always good to hear from fellow Q2M'ers! I agree, everything becomes a subject, lol. I wish I lived near a covered bridge, have fun with your shoot. 🙂

just ordered a 28mm. i tried to be a henri cartier bresson fanboy and only shoot 50mm for the dreamy artsy look but i feel like im not really capturing the environment. yes you can capture beutiful moments with 50 but its so far from reality due to the long focal length. 50 you create cinematic isolated bubble world. i love it but its very restricted. i find myself seeing things so often and i just look through the viewfinder to find out that this photo will be so zoomed its pointless to even take it. many times its impossible to move further back.

Yes, I agree. I used a 50mm for years, and once I started shooting with a 28, wondered why it had taken me so long to find my preferred focal length. Enjoy your 28!

Thanks for a really interesting video talking about your challenges and how you dealt with them. I'd love to hear your process around creating the documentary. How much is pre- planned or do you pull together a narrative afterwards? And how do you go about creating a compelling story? But thanks again for this video! It was refreshing to hear that even a professional has equipment constraints and your logic behind what you took and used!

Hi, thanks for the comment!. I don't consider myself a RU-vidr, I just enjoy making videos when I go out with a camera. I prefer to be completely honest, as I have nothing to prove, and nothing to sell. I tend to rush my videos and forget to add things, like the details of the results with a mist filter! Basically I use a mist filter to soften my photos taken with very sharp clinical modern lenses. You only see a glow on brightly lit areas, otherwise you wouldn't know a mist filter was being used. Thanks for watching. 🙂

I'm also moved by the power and mystery of inclement weather. In fact, summer is a time when I'm less inspired to make photographs and video (unless hiding in the shade of the forest). Black and white also evokes more emotion. Both of these probably have to do with growing up in England in the 50s, because, as we know, "if the sun don't come, you get a tan from standing in the English rain."
@SimonBurnCreative
@SimonBurnCreative Месяц назад
Ah, summertime and photographers. Chalk and cheese. I prefer English weather in the summer months, and black and white. Growing up, black and white was all I knew. I studied black and white and shot on black and white. I was taught photography was about creating an emotional response, and an image without the distraction of colour was the preferred way. Cheers Ray!

A great insight into those summer "blues" (and greens) Si... it's not until someone like your poses the question do I think about my own shootint in summer style. Without really knowing I have adopted in many cases that urge/need to turn my woodland summer greens (not to be confused with those vibrant spring greens) into something more palletable. You are bang on about the moody images not having a saleable product in the commercial world - but hey ho I shoot for me 98% of the time so I know the score there. I wou;d slightly disagree with you about buying presets/luts to be honest. Yes they can be used as a stand alone - but they can also be used as a starting point in the process journey. I was given some a good while ago and use them as that starting point - after all each image varies when its produced so I just use them as an add on to my own creativity. I shared this X, I think its a good topic for debate. atb Al
@SimonBurnCreative
@SimonBurnCreative Месяц назад
Hi Al, thanks for the detailed feedback. I probably mention the commercial side of photography too much, but that's my background, I can't help it! I do realize most people watching are shooting for themselves, as am I when I go out and make these videos, most of the time. As for presets, it's good we all have different opinions and can discuss our thoughts etc. My reason for mentioning this stems from seeing so many photos on social media that are clearly using presets from the more popular influencers, and are choosing to copy them, rather than use a presets a starting point. I find it rather sad and non-creative. I was pleased with myself that I held back from saying more about this 😂 It's fair to add that I spend a lot of time in photoshop for my job, I use it daily, so get to experiment more than most, and do understand that a preset can be a good way to learn for those with less time to play. 🙂 Keep well Al, cheers!

Very nice! Also, just viewed your Camino film. I have a Z8 and only travel with carry-on, so I like your minimalist approach, gives me ideas as I pivot into filmmaking. I am curious what you used to hold up your camera in this video during your walk abouts. Great idea how you’ve put borders around your photos with a grey background, nice touch!
@SimonBurnCreative
@SimonBurnCreative Месяц назад
Thanks for the note. Having used both the Z8 and Z9 for travel now, the Z8 is certainly easier to carry around. I use an OpTech USA strap around my neck. It has some flex in it, and when held taught, allows for some very stable footage. Most of my footage is shot that way in my latest documentary film.
