I still feel that the color wheel in Magic: the Gathering is Richard Garfield's magnum opus of game design. That simple, but genius, idea has helped keep that game aloft all this time.

Games that surprised me lately. Evacuation: Theme I love, I like underwater cities and Prague. But Evacuation stikes me as a puzzle and not fun experience. Carnegie: great reviews, cool theme, interesting art. And first thing I saw my player board "I woirk in my work time. I don't wanna work in my leisure time:)". And one good. Darwin's Journey: I watched reviews and it looked beige bland and bloated. But I borrowed it and... insta buy. So open, yet so tight. So many cogs to turn:)

Just got my to back rebirth. I also want to vote with dollars. The production having no plastic and using re-wood I want to be more common. Money where my mouth is. So i became a member too. Loved your videos for a long time. Have the money to spare at the moment. Now to go through years of podcasts backlog.... 😂

About Shadows over the Empire, I bought it because of Rahdo too, and it's one of my top 5 games. I only played one game of 3p and it was horrendous, I thus consider it a strictly 2-player game. HOWEVER the guy might have played it wrong since you CANNOT eliminate a player - players cannot influence & target opposing leaders with abilities. ...but yes the game is cutthroat and the back-and-forth is nerve-wracking. 11/10 would recommend

Is there an easy way to see the different options to support the show and what each level provides? I've looked at Patreon, but it seems like you just have to try selecting each offering and seeing whether it is accessible. I'm sure there is an easy way....?

I can't help thinking most people don't have the hang-ups you do about cut-throat play: so don't beat yourself up too much, Richard. Player elimination is another matter, though, but it didn't sound like that was technically what was going on in that game, SOTE, just a practical knock-out.

It seems like you were also surprised by your preview of "Pillars of Heracles." Usually DOAM and that level of competitiveness is off-putting for you. The mechanism of being able to lose control of a region but not its production seemed to redeem it for you.

yes that is a good one too. tbh the only reasons i agreed to cover it was because 1) alex agreed to do the lion's share of the work learning and teaching it to me and 2) it was from the publisher of Ahau which i loved. i didn't expect to like it at all, but yes it was a big suprise. and another one was epochs :)

Wow, Claude AI sounds really smart. I wonder if it could tell Maga folk what they really need to know, about the Republican leader, rather than locking them into an echo chamber!? But would it know cut-throat can also be expressed as player interaction? Maybe revieing the vid or transcript yourself would be a better idea: hold on, I'm just about to do that... I've checked: your final thoughts mentioned a card that 'taps' or temporarily negates an opponent's card: definitely some take-that covered there, even if it wasn't explicitly called out: the viewer can extrapolate there might be 'worse' cards...

claude is programmed to stay fairly neutral on contentious issues... it generally goes out of its way to not upset anyone with its answers. but it definitely knows what cutthroat means, i did check the video afterwards and it was 100% correct in its summary and responses.
