Crabbing and fishing the southern New Jersey area. Always looking for new spots. I try to share locations as much as possible to help others find where to go, what is there and what they might expect to catch. People seem to want to guard their secret locations and that's fine. Good luck. Google maps kinda destroyed that, so why not embrace it. Share so many locations that the odds of your spot being crowded are slim. It's basic supply and demand. I started this channel precisely because no one was willing to share and I only had 3 places to go. I honed my skills at finding places and started to review them. Now I have a lot of choices on where to go and I will never, EVER keep any of them secret. If your favorite secret spot gets featured don't blame me, blame Google maps. Google maps didn't tag it as "your" secret spot.
Talking about a small world , we were watching this video and the second location you were at , i noticed that you were at a location we were fishing a few days ago . Then I realized we were there when you were . I was there with my kids and wife. White truck and silver explore north of your location you can see in this video . Lol, good luck on your fishing and crabbing journey. Great video !!!
@@slingshotcrabbing he had a black fish are all over the place man incoming tide outgoing tide cuz I live a couple of blocks away from the Staten Island ferry and disappear right next to it tons of blackfish brother short black fish keeper size blackfish like I was when I text you earlier about I'm going to do the same thing I'm going to go fishing this weekend I'm taking three crab traps I'm going to get green crabs clams and sand worms because the plug is a huge over here the poison is still running around the spots are getting bigger it's like an aquarium over here I'm going to go for striped bass Saturday night then I got to go black fishing and crabbing Sunday morning
Never knew that. I just go by the card I get at the bait shops. The one that has all the fish sizes and the crab sizes and the limits. It does get tough when it gets cold. Some cool places you go to, I enjoy the videos.
All the time when I have time to pick some up. I've also been using these big sardines I can pick up at ShopRite. I think they are called Hungarian sardines. They actually work pretty good.
Thanks Mike! Technically I caught 20+ fish if you count the minnows. Could never understand why people buy them. I had 3 in the trap in minutes. I used one of those to fish with and by the time I came back for another there was over a dozen in the trap.
That's what I was hoping for. I need heavier jig heads though. I only had small ones and couldn't cast very far. I even have scent I tried adding. it's hard to have everything for every situation, especially considering I've never been to either of these locations, but I do what I can.
Yep. that was my first but I've seen people catch them all the time. It might have been out of season, I can't tell the difference between summer or winter flounder. Guess I should look it up considering if it was a winter flounder I could have kept it. They only need to be 12".
Yeah the only weights I use since I do live on Staten Island and the currents always strong and moving I used 3 to 4 oz sinkers I'll be doing that this weekend including crabbing see if the blue crabs are around
According to the recreational anglers cheat sheet I got online it says "Delaware Bay Apr 6 - Dec 4 all other waters Mar 15 - Nov 30" so there is a season. I just choose Nov 1 because I just won't catch anything. Can you catch them? Certainly, but in all the years I've been crabbing I've barely caught anything between Oct and May. I've tried, just like I've tried night crabbing. They go dormant around 50 deg water temp and its almost there. I forget but I think the water was 55 deg at the first spot. It changes with the tide but it's just splitting hairs at that point. Technically the crabs have been unhappy since it dropped below 70 deg. Next Sunday it will be a lot colder. 46-59 deg air temp. I really doubt I'll catch anything, but I'll still try.
Always enjoy getting out and seeing different places. Really wish something would click with fishing. I actually do know a lot about fishing but it's all random basic things. I have no idea how to read the water and know what fish should be there and how to catch them.
I can try. you and @glenndavis6120 both suggested Matt's Landing. Have a particular spot in mind in Matt's Landing? Can post GPS coordinate if you can find it.
Full moon last few days why the tide was up .. Past 2 years there's been an exploding amount of Blowfish which eat small crabs it's a naturally cycle .. When the blowfish aren't around as much crabbing is way better .. I'm retired now and seen crabbing go up n downs over the decades with those large amounts of blowfish .... good video .. MB ..
P.s. Who told you there is a " crab season " meaning it closes after a certain date for recreational crabbing with collapsible traps? That's bad info & not true read the laws in the marine section of fish & wildlife booklet or online
@@ItAintMeBabe99 gota read the rules & regs🤣🤣 this hasn't changed in years along with crab size limits, if anything they should regulate commercial crabbers tighter
I just googled it. "when does recreational crab season end in NJ?". "The recreational crab season in New Jersey ends on November 30 in all waters except Delaware Bay and its tributaries, where the season ends on December 4". I choose to end mine on Nov 1 because it's usually pretty pointless to crab in cold water, which is part of the reason why I've been taking measurements. Unless you get a crab dredge license you won't catch much, but by all means, go for it. Let me know when you post the video.
@slingshotcrabbing you need to read that further , tha t rule is for commercial style traps, not collapsible style recreational traps for which there is no start or end date
@@wayned5872 You do you. The sheet I'm looking at right now says "2024 NJ Recreational Size Limits, Possession Limits and Seasons". It's the same sheet shown in my video titled Sunset Park - Harvey Cedars, NJ (40 minutes 58 seconds). It was posted at the fishing pier. These are the rules I choose to follow. If you want to follow other rules then I won't stop you. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying these are what I'm following, if I wasn't clear.
Ive never heard of anyone doing any decent crabbing where u were, but across the bay from there on the" mainland" seems to be better crabbing u basically have to find small beaches
I think you're on to something. I've caught them before but that was insane. I'm keeping them for bait from now on. Frozen is probably better than nothing.
Hi Tony Dan here.... I know I am repeating myself but I can't remember crabbing in October and seeing so many babies. I went to bass river Wednesday and same thing babies. I remember catching big rustys in the fall. Temperature Is supposed to go down to the low 30s tonight so I don't knowknoe👍.
Interesting video I watched about green crabs, apparently they are kind of an invasive species. They dig up marshlands and uproot plants. I'm wondering if they are messing up the blue crab population. All the babies is odd. Last year I wasn't catching much this late in the season, but that was probably just bad luck. I was surprised to catch 4. But those green crabs were insane. I've never caught so many before. I must have pulled up at least 50. In hind sight I should have kept them to use for bait.
Season ends November 30th but I've never had it last that long. When water temp gets in the 50's they dig in for the winter. Unfortunately it's getting close to that now.
Lots of green crabs at this spot for anyone looking for tog bait. I was catching them non stop. Caught 3 skate on cut mullet. Had a great time! Fishing uses up a lot of batteries on the gopro. I never know when to start recording so I was almost recording everything. I was on my last battery by the end of the day. That last fish had to be a ray or something big. It screamed my drag and snapped my line in seconds. I guess I need to use heavier line until I get more skill on fighting the fish on lighter tackle. Still happy to catch something other than spot and dogfish. I'll start looking for another spot for next week.
@@slingshotcrabbing The tog fisherman are screaming out loud right now greenies are tog candy not sure how much they cost but I would suspect pretty high
If anywhere near there id stay on white horse pike, i never heard of any decent public crabbing spots on brigantine, Riptide bait & tackle is a very good shop. Brown crabs definitely tog bait
I've done the bridges on Rt. 30 a few times. Usually pretty good crabbing there. The guy at Riptide was very helpful, defiantly recommend stopping there.
@@slingshotcrabbing , Yep they are I'm from Monmouth Co. but in 2020 bought a house in NC to get away from Trenton's laws n taxes but still have my house in Wall township .. be well MB ..
Well, I know where to get them now. They were thick off that pier. Some I think were a little big for bait though. I tried using some frozen blue crab for bait but the smaller minnows were just picking them clean. You would think with so many green crabs there would be a few tog hiding under the docks. Can I freeze them for later?
Just show up with traps and chicken an have some fun! Do it soon though. Season closes November 30th. They ask you to register but I seriously doubt many do.
I'm surprised too. I'm glad the water temp is holding though. It means the keepers might actually hold out the full season. Last year it got pretty cold early on and all the crabs dug in and disappeared.
Tony....Dan here. I'm sorry but I couldn't stop laughing when you caught your trap. Do you think its possible a crab dragged your bait into the trap? Awesome video as always👍
Hey Dan! It's possible. I changed to a 2oz pyramid sinker it it held fast. I think next time I'll try bloodworms too. I really have no idea what I'm doing. Lol. I just keep throwing everything at it in hopes of finding what works. Then again I watch a lot of fishing videos and sometimes they go out multiple days because they don't catch anything. I only have Sunday to make it work. I guess it's a little unrealistic to think it's always my lack of skill as the reason for not catching fish.
Back to chicken for crabs, no frozen sand fleas, 1/0-4/0 circle hooks by mustard, gamakatsu or owner, pyramid & coin weights NO BANK SINKERS THEY ROLL & WILL SPIN YOUR LINE..Wayne
I'll pick up more chicken for next trip. Are the frozen sand fleas garbage? If so I'll toss them. I'm using gamakatsu 1/0 and 4/0 now. I'll stick with coin sinkers. it's pretty much everything I use when catfishing. What should I be using for bait? I usually try to use what I can get from Shoprite. I do pick up bait when I can but most shops just seem to have random bait, like the frozen sand fleas.
@slingshotcrabbing froze sandfleas are just below ok for bait give them a crack sothe scent drifts( think chum slick) i think ur better off with bloodworm scent fishbites over sandfleas. If u can find it get some FINESSENCE brand shedder crab oil & marinate ur squid in that over night in a zip lock bag. Minnows are all year bait never let a shop owner talk u out of them, if he or she does they are trying to dump old froze bait ( sandfleas) that they can't sell or coz they don't have quality minnows or bloodworms.
Thanks! Next weekend I planned to go to Brigantine proper, not the bridges on the way this time. As far as I know it doesn't have a name. Let's hope I can actually crab/fish there and it's not private property or something. Lol
Thanks! The format will stay mostly the same but unfortunately crabbing season closes soon in NJ and all the crabs will hibernate for the winter. During the off season I'll still release content though, weather permitting, where I'll be attempting to try my luck at fishing.
What a beautiful area!!! Glad you're sharing this because as an older person I can see that I would be able to have access to the necessary facilities and easily get on the pier to fish or to crab. Never thought about things like that when I was younger but age crept up on me and there are only a few places I have access to now. Love this place and love how you cover all the crabbing places you've gone to. Some I can see how I would be able to access them and others it would be to difficult. Great job in covering all the amenities so me or others would know if the places you go are places they would want to go. I watch other crabbing videos but I don't recall any of the others going into so much detail as to where they are and what amenities are there as far as accessibility, restrooms, etc. Thank you for taking the time to share with us.♥
Glad you liked it! It is a really nice place and everywhere I could see is wheelchair accessible as well, which is a nice touch by the township. I'm sure during the "on" season that place would be packed though.
