The 1073 sounded fine on the individual instruments, but honestly where it shined in this video was the mixdown bus. Whew, did that sound good. My favorite has to have been the Camden though. Thanks for the comparison! That was awesome - and I appreciate that you played the same thing on each. Real easy to compare that way
@@thirdislandproductions9708 Oh right! I just bought my first 500 series rack and my first pre comes tomorrow, an AEA RPQ500. Very curious how different these will sound compared to my MOTU interface and the many interface pres I have worked with in the past.
3:45 the sax/horn section is crazy sexy. How do you record it? Do you use plugins like session horns pro for demoing horns etc. and then you record it with real saxophone?
Yeah actually I recorded the lines on guitar and then transposed on to staff paper for Tenor sax and flute and then had my horn player come in and record. I used just a condenser and Overdubbed parts.
@@thirdislandproductions9708 really good sound, thank you! what is your processing for horns? But even more interested in plugins you might use for the horn sections. For demo purposes I use session horns pro with all the 12 articulations. It is solid, but not as good as real ones of course
@@0oTHEJACKo0 Man I Just use my go to plugins. My Lindell 80 Channel Strip on individual tracks, UA 1176 A medium compression, Plate Reverb, Then I bus the Horns and add some Saturation with Black Box and then SSL Bus comp. Nothin Crazy!
I liked the Rupert 511 best in the mono section, but the Camden took the prize in the stereo section. The mixdown of the Camden was the most surprising. That mix just had a lot more color and dimensionality to my ears.
512c is the closest to a nicely 'finished sound' on all sources to my ear and the Camden was surprisingly similar to the API, albeit a little less consistent. Nice work
For rock and metal , I generally Hi-pass everything up to 500Hz sometimes more. I find that if I get too much "Drums" in the overheads , the drums get muddy/boxy , especially the faster the tempo is. I let the shell mics and room mics take care of the body and glue. I like your approach to cymbals on Reggae.
i have an old Windows 10 PC about 6 years old i have the first type apollo twin type c, ive had no issues, i see you are using Reason studio, which version? i use reason version10 and 11, the reason i mention this is because i was unable to use reason version 12 on my system, i got terrible sound breakup even at 1024 lantency sample setting, i tried upgrading my graphics card but it didnt help! i mainly use Reaper now, and reason 11 as a VST inside reaper.
Can you do a review of MODO bass, and compare it to your real bass? I do reggae and can not get a full bass sound out of MODO. Your real bass sound full. Very few people have compared a real bass playing the same part with the same vol vs MODO
I don’t have modo bass unfortunately so I can review it. I could try to download a free trial but I’m just as unfamiliar it. What DAW do you use ? Look for sine wave bass patches where it’s all just low end. Look up some videos on how to make sub bass with a synth and it should do the trick
Big fan of your work and thanks for all these videos you’ve been putting out! Quick question, what drawbar settings do you have on the bubble organ? The sound is perfect
Thanks for the kind words. Glad to Help! So, I am just using patches from my DAW but a good setting for bubble with drawbars is usually just the low drawbar all the way down and everything else up. It just depends on the sound you are going for.
They all sound great on different sources. Cranborne surprised me though while API sounds great on everything. I’d still go with the SSL as it has that undeniable punch that the others didn’t have. Great time to be a producer/mixer.
I found a iOS plugin called dub - high pass filter by audiothing. It’s modeled after what king tubby uses. Might give it a try when I get some extra funds.
hi! nNice video:-) i wonder if u could help me out, since u got a simular set as me, i as u have R8 as my main interface, recently ive added a ferrofish pulse Adat to increase the possibility for extra IO, the plan is to hook up some 19 inch comp/EQ using the ferrofish pulse adat, back to R8, but im using reaper as my DAW, i can se signal, but i cant hear anything using channel 1 and 2, do u need to set up a different monitor output for this setup in reaper maybe?, im slightlly confused, here.....how would u set this up?,using the R8 with ferrofish pulse in reaper?
Thanks for the vid. I just picked up an extremely clean example of this amp. I bought it without hearing it so I'll have to go through it to clean pots and I'll check the areas that you pointed out. In your video. There is no mention of using a Variac to bring your repair amp up to power. Did you use one? I intend to bring the amp I have up slowly with a Variac to make sure there are no funky issues before playing through it. The Standby toggle switch on mine is stuck in "On". Can that be sprayed with cleaner to loosen up?
The Cranborne is a lot better than I thought it was, can see a lot of use cases for that one... here to see how the audioscape golden pre sounds.. lovely for some high end sparkle... it's best to have a good amount of choices as there's never any best ones, just what fits for that one bit of one thing in a track
SSL last in the list for me personally... but all have their own little sound which will compliment each other. Cranborne was a surprise to me, a good work horse for sure!!
I'm impressed by all of them. That Stam tho, holy. Sounded like it had a little EQ on it. Probably unavailable as you'd expect! I may just order the Cranborne, very interesting that one, seems like it can do a lot for the price, and bonus with the Mojo. Surprised how the SSL kept up with the API, and was a tiny bit scooped in comparison with a little extra sheen. The Neve is great on acoustic. I think the Golden 58 should be traded for something better, was the least impressed with that, only sounded good on bass and snare 1, OR I'm not getting what it's about. Thanks for your efforts!
Wow, I hear significant differences on good headphones. API was tight and accurate sounding. SSL was solid, with a significant lift in the top frequencies (did you use it completely flat eq?). Camden messed with the low frequency transients, sounding woofy like boosting a bass eq. 511 was very saturated, almost overdriven, but with a modern character (did you use the "silk" knob?). Audioscape was way more compressed with significant top-end roll off. 1073 was super punchy in the low end with larger than life high mids. Very hifi "studio" sound.
@@thirdislandproductions9708 Thanks, it's crazy how different the frequency responses ended up with no EQ. My 511 doesn't sound nearly as saturated, were you really driving the input?
Many thanks! Mostly just panning! Also stereo recordings create a lot of width as well. My Overheads on the drums are natural a stereo recording. Panning hats left or right. There’s a Width knob on my piano vst as well. There’s also some natural stereo information on my verbs, 🙏🏼
Yooo I was just thinking about doing this a couple days ago, and either using the Lindell 80 or 50. Crazy timing (and insanely good mix, as usual). Home Again/Far Away still on repeat! 🏠
Thanks G! Yeah man. It’s sick cause it just makes you that much better at mixing if you can dial in a mix with only one Channel strip plug in. Thanks as always for watching and supporting man 🙏🏼🫡
All kinds of flavors there in that arsenal. The camdens are super clean, ssls too. What level did you have the mojo vibe knob at? The APIs are punchy, the 1073 add color and bottom, the 511 too but a different flavor, with the silk option. The camdens on mix down sounded most noticeable in comparison to its individual takes, really could tell its characteristics even moreso from that. Lots of crayons here
For sure! Thanks for watching. The Mojos were at like 8 o’clock I believe. Both on the cream setting. I probably should’ve just left em off for complete transparency but figured it would be subtle and wouldn’t hurt.
