Nequaquam nobis divinitus esse paratam
Naturam rerum; tanta stat praedita culpa

"Had God designed the world, it would not be
A world so frail and faulty as we see." -Titus Lucretius Carus

"If we affirm one moment, we thus affirm not only ourselves but all existence. For nothing is self-sufficient, neither in us ourselves nor in things; and if our soul has trembled with happiness and sounded like a harp string just once, all eternity was needed to produce this one event - and in this single moment of affirmation all eternity was called good, redeemed, justified, and affirmed."

"In Christianity neither morality nor religion come into contact with reality at any point." - Friedrich Nietzsche

"Fear is the basis of the whole - fear of the mysterious, fear of defeat, fear of death. Fear is the parent of cruelty, and therefore it is no wonder if cruelty and religion have gone hand-in-hand." - Bertrand Russell

"The infliction of cruelty with a good conscience is a delight to moralists - that is why they invented hell."

"It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it."
- Albert Einstein

"If Jesus Christ was the being which those Mythologists tell us he was, and that he came into this world to suffer, which is a word they sometimes use instead of to die, the only real suffering he could have endured, would have been to live. His existence here was a state of exilement or transportation from Heaven, and the way back to his original country was to die. In fine, everything in this strange system is the reverse of what it pretends to be."
- Thomas Paine

"One of the great tragedies of mankind is that morality has been hijacked by religion."
- Arthur C. Clarke

"Indeed, I can see no reason, but the most deceitful one, for calling the religion of this land Christianity. I look upon it as the climax of all misnomers, the boldest of all frauds, and the grossest of all libels. Never was there a clearer case of "stealing the livery of the court of heaven to serve the devil in." I am filled with unutterable loathing when I contemplate the religious pomp and show, together with the horrible inconsistencies, which every whe

I went to West Point and saw this in high school. I have forced my friends and family through great pain to watch this documentary. It's been my life goal to make this mandatory watch for every military leader to watch and read McNamara's book Ghost.

the caveat in his position is that he was at death's doorstep and had nothing to lose, but hey at least he was willing to divulge his position and rationalize the decisions that happened during his tenure. I remember reading a famous article -- McNamara and 3 others were the authors. I studied it in 1982, when it was published. The four wrote a deeply thoughtful article about what nuclear deterrence should and should not be. I didn't fully agree with that article then -- my ideas differ more from the mainstream than McNamara's -- and that is still true. But if the US and allies had followed McNamara's advice, in 1982 and 2003 (when the film for this RU-vid was made), the world would now be a safer place than it is.

In 1947 the war office became the defence department and ushered in the era of the boogy man and the defence against that boogy man. Trillions handed to private companies to provide defence and the only way to judge its worth is that you’ve not been attacked and when you are attacked the solution to those attacks, more money for defence. A nations people gets poorer, sicker and more divided every year yet defence spending is never lowered.
