They do random checks by customs at international airports. But they focus on travellers who might carry goods of interest. An average australian traveller is mostly uninteresting. If you got the chance to visit friends directly in Hamburg at New Years eve, go to Landungsbrücken and watch and listen it there when all bell tolls all harbor vessels blow their horns and the tug boats do a water ballet. l

As a non german, most of the things to me seem more european (or central european) things than just german to be honest. But it doesn't change the fact that you seem to like it here in europe, and that an outside perspective is a great way to control ones own perception of the status quo. About the speeds on the Autobahn: You australians might only be allowed to go 110 (which most european countries top easily) but one important difference is that in europe trucks above a certain weight are only allowed to go 80, busses 100. I think in your country trucks can go as fast as cars right? And those trucks in europe have a weight limit of 40tons on the continent and 60 tons in scandianavia i think. While you got "road trains". And while in europe you need an additional license for towing a trailer that *together with your car* has a maximum weight of over 3500kg (max weight not current weight for both) you guys have no such thing as a trailer license. Here in europe you have different drivers license categories for 2wheel vehcicles up to 400kg, 4wheeles vechicles up to 3500 kg, trucks between 3500 and 7500kg, trucks above 7500 kg, busses, tractors and machines able to drive on the road (like tractors, excavators...), trailers for vehicles that have less than 3500kg max weight, trailers for trucks above 3500kg... (there's a letter system: A=motorcycles, B=cars, C=trucks above 3500kg, D=busses, E=trailers, F=the machinery. And there are sub categories) Usually you need to attend driving school with theory and practical training as well as therorethical and practical exam. So for our european eyes the german speedlimitless parts (the few there are) of autobahn seem less dangerous than the traffic laws in AUS. Btw.: in several countries in europe new drivers have 0.00% alcohol for driving for 2-3 years as well as need to do a drivers safety training within the first two years of having a drivers license. (I know that for Finnland and Austria that is the case.) Also, cars in most of europe need to pass quite strict road safety checks either every 2 years (like german TÜV) or yearly (lke austria and many other countries). That also reduces the dangers with speeds a little. 7:55 "Rettungsgasse" = maybe "emergency lane" would fit as translation. Not a pure german thing. Befor that system was introduced there were basically mandatory "lanes on the right of the first lane" on highways in most of central europe that in german was called "Pannenstreifen" so were you stop when your vehicle has a breakdown. And in traffic jams emergency services would use those "lanes" to get to the accident. The idea behind changing it to the "parting of the traffic tides" is that in traffic jams vehicles have breakdowns, and so they block that route for emergency services and so parting the traffic was seen as a better idea. But be aware, driving on the breakdown lane was and is expensive. (If you don't have a breakdown) Just as is driving in the space that people make for that emergency lane. About the fireworks: be safe! I have stopped firing up fireworks years ago. Am not in germany, but here too from basically 22:00 to 02:00 there's a constant "thunder and crackle" to hear outside. But firing off ones own fireworks means you get less time to look at the ones already going off. And so i just turn 360° and look at the nice forworks others wast their money on. ;-)

You have already read that people have praised your German, so I would just like to point out two things that I think you are doing absolutely right, that are often overlooked and that make your pronunciation sound more natural. 1.) You smile: German has very clear and pure vowels. In English, almost all vowels are actually umlauts, as they are a combination of two sounds (e.g. the english "o" goes from an "o" to a "u", comparable to the word "bow"). The german "e", for example, can only be pronounced if you pull your mouth wide and it is by far the most common letter in the german language (also in english). A clean and drawn-out "e" (e.g. in the words "See (lake)", "kleben (to glue)", "beraten (to advice)" or "Besen (broom)") does not exist in the english language, there is only a short "e" as in "wet" or "pet". 2.) You don't sound "aggressive": When you speak aggressively, the melody of the language is lost. For example, when you ask a question, the pitch goes up at the end of the sentence; if the question is spoken aggressively, the pitch usually stays the same. The melody can give words a different meaning. If someone asks you: "Are you listening to me?", a sober "Ja" would simply mean "yes", as a statement. If you emphasize the "a" more and go up with the melody, it becomes a question and means: "yes, I'm listening, please go on". This should actually be similar in english.

Good to hear that you enjoy your stay here in Germany, and Europe. I used to live in Australia, and I enjoyed the relaxed way of driving there..., and I liked the fireworks in Australia much better, because I felt save, professional. In some places in Germany they go bonkers, and it is very dangerous, every year many accidents happen, some severe...

Bottle deposits have great effects. The streets are cleaner. But that wasn't the reason. Recycling wasn't the reason either. They wanted to save money on staff. Same story with Deutsche Bahn and the "smoking areas". And all the recycling means you have to pay fewer staff to clean and sort. So job cuts and not environmental protection. They just like to sell it as environmental protection The employer pays for 6 weeks, then the health insurance company. But if you are sick for more than 6 weeks you can be fired because it is unreasonable for the employer. It is a can, not a must.
@Coralie_Anne
@Coralie_Anne 2 дня назад
Oh very interesting.. while it sucks it's taking jobs away, I can't argue with how good it is for 25c per bottle.
@DanPat85
@DanPat85 2 дня назад
@@Coralie_Anne Yes, I'm not sure whether I think that's good or bad. It's actually good, there are more good things about it. For example, if you're outside and don't want to carry the bottle around with you, you just put it next to a trash can and you're helping someone else. For example, the poor, the homeless, etc.

In my experience as a multilingual person it's important to learn to imitate and to learn by hearing. Learning by reading is difficult and sometimes even counterproductive. And the fastest way to learn is "by need" and not "by will". Meaning if you are forced to speak and to communicate (maybe because others don't know english) its more effective than to grind vocabulary...

10:22 Sick leave is unlimited, however the payment and who pas for it changes. The first six weeks are covered by the employer, after that the health insurance takes over and pays Krankengeld for up to 72 weeks. Krankengeld is not at 100 % anymore though, it's usually 70 % of your wage. If the illness/injury exceeds even the total of 78 weeks (6 weeks 100% payed by the employer+ 72 weeks of Krankengeld) you have to apply for rehabilitation measures and/or apply for a specifici form of pension, the Erwerbsminderungsrente, if you are no longer capable of working full-time, but at this point we enter complicated bureaucracy territory. PS: If you are caught taking advantage of the health system - that's a reason for getting fired. We have two types of contract terminations: timely termination which can have all sorts of reasons and often come with severance payment or something like that (varies by case) and termination without notice which is much more serious, can have severe implications for future employments and has no benefits attached at all. Reasons for a termination without notice include stuff like serious breaches of duty, criminal offenses, mobbing and also pretending to be sick when you're perfectly healthy.
@Coralie_Anne
@Coralie_Anne 4 дня назад
That's an incredible system, to be so well supported in a time of need! But I'm glad there's fair grounds for punishment if it's taken advantage of, as you will want it when you need it most.

The perspective is always important. If you go by the customers of DB or the comparissons to the SBB and ÖBB, DB is always last. Unless it's about canceled trains and deleays. ;-) And that even though the swiss and austrian train systems have way harder circumstances to deal with. More alps mean worse weatherconditions, (more snow and more mud avellanches in steep areas ect.) more tunnels and viaducts that cost way more to keep up in safe conditions... But when you compare it with a trainsystem like the austrialian or the US one, the german one is great.
