The heart(s) next to the unit represents how healthy the unit is. 3 hearts means the unit is close to full strength; 1 heart means the unit is severely depleted.

I was just wondering about it! Thanks for description.

This is a very good presentation. All I would add is Kiev is not the target and hence the Battle in the first place. Von Runstedt is not going to attack a City frontally no matter the orders.

It is generally accepted in the red army that it was until after Stalingrad they finally learned to fight the Wehrmacht. It's an education paid in endless blood and death. But even after they gain a major victory, their over eagerness to capitalize is often met with major backfire. For example their massive losses in Rzhev and Ukraine following battle of Moscow and Stalingrad respectively.

I'll never fail to be shocked by how staggering the losses sustained by the Red Army were during these opening battles.

Staff (millions of people): Germany - 5.5; USSR - 2.9 (1.9: 1) Weapons and mortars (thousands of units): Germany - 47.2; USSR - 32.9 (1.4: 1) Tanks (thousands): Germany - 4.3; USSR - 14.2 (0.3: 1) Fighter aircraft (thousand units): Germany - 5.0; USSR - 9.2 (0.5: 1) The overall ratio of forces and resources of Germany and its allies, and the USSR (1.2: 1) It cannot be said, then, that Stalin allegedly did not equip the country for the war. Directive No. 1 of 21 June 1941. I enclose an order from the People's Commissariat of Defense for immediate implementation: 1. During June 22-23, 1941, a sudden German attack is possible. The attack can begin with provocative actions. 2. The task of our units is not to succumb to any provocative activities that could cause great complications. 3. At the same time, the military units of the military districts of Leningrad, the Baltic, the West, Kiev and Odessa should be fully prepared to face a possible sudden attack by the Germans or their allies. 4. I COMMAND: (a) on the night of 22 June 1941, secretly occupy the launch sites of fortified areas at the state border; b) before dawn on 22 June 1941 to disperse all aircraft, including military, carefully disguise them; c) bring everyone to combat readiness. Troops keep scattered and hidden; d) bring air defense to combat readiness. Prepare all measures for obscuring cities and buildings; e) not to perform any other actions without a personal order. The order was accepted by all commanders of the circuits and air force, but the order was delivered only to the troops of the military districts of Leningrad and the Baltic and the personnel of the Baltic Fleet. It was a direct betrayal of the homeland by military leaders, a betrayal that had catastrophic consequences. On August 8, 1941, Joseph Stalin was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the USSR Armed Forces. From that moment on, he took personal control of EVERYTHING at the front. No major operation during World War II was planned without his participation.

The famine in Ukraine is available (in English only, a publication by Canadian author Douglass Tottle - Fraud, Famine and Fascism, from which you can easily learn about the famine that it was caused exclusively by a bloody civil war, already unleashed by white decay with the help of interventions capitalist states with the support of tsarist generals. In this white collection you will also find the founder of Czechoslovakia. fascist village of Radol Gajda. It's just Mr. Vodvárka, with the support of local writers, that you have to use house numbers, probably taken exclusively from bourgeois journalistic prevention. You can learn a lot about the Civil War, its outbreak and its course in the book The Civil War in the USSR, which can be read in the mother tongue. P.S. In this respect, the fascinating figure of one of our best writers, the genius author of The Fates of the Good Soldier Švejk, Jaroslav Hašek, who directly participated in the fighting as a political commissioner together with 900 hundred Czechoslovaks, is very interesting. legionaries joining the Bolsheviks

German losses were highest during August and after that went down in 1941: July 172 214, August 196 597, Sept 141 144, Oct 114 865, Nov 87 139 and Dec 77 857. With numbers of KIA: July 37 584, August 41 019, Sept 29 422, Oct 24 056, Nov 17 806 and Dec 14 949. No one knows exactly Soviet losses but according the new study of Russian military historian Lev Lopukhovsky and ,Boris Kavalerchik and Harold Orenstein (Author, Translator) military deaths in 41-45 were staggering 14.6 million.

A question that is ignored by many historians is why there were so many Russian divisions in the southern front area. There was no reason to build up there army to that level? But, there was....they were about to invade Romania to capture the oil fields which was Germany's main source of oil. Stalin and Molotov were constantly threatening Germany they were going to invade Romania which would cripple Germany. This is one of the main reasons for Operation Barbarossa.....there's never any mention of that from historians today.

Do you think that the presence of Marshal Mikhail Toukhatchevski and his staff would have changed the outcome of the Barbarossa operation? I think Staline made a serious mistake in getting rid of this Marechale from the same military precepts as De Gaulle and Guderian. It took until Operation Bagration to finally see the Red Army regain the strategy and tactics of imposing Marshal Toukhatchevski...

@roadrunner2204

Good channel, effort and animations, but as some other people already stated in your comments you kept repeating outdated Cold war propaganda in explanations of events. In this one is - Stalin didn't care about his people, which is easy to check if you speak Russian, and check any Russian veteran interview( they might speak bad about some of the generals, but not about Stalin), or check even nowdays Stalin popularity among common Russians, after decades of anti Stalin propaganda. Do you research. In this one, again it is Stalin fault, as he ordered to hold the ground, which we can see is not true, as whole front was trying to escape and retreating some 200km but was unable to do so, do to German mobility and air destruction of retreating soviet units, making any mass retreat in this stage of the war very risky maneuver. This is the main reasons why Red Army was encircled around Kiev, as they were realizing that retreating such a big mass of men and equipment along such a long distance in narrow corridor with few roads would be suicide ( and they have recalled recent disaster at Uman, with much smaller force ), and they wee hoping that defense line behind Dinepr as more than good natural obstacle could be held
