I only became aware of this building a few months ago (probably from your channel) and I believe it's one of the few ancient structures that has been successfully modified for modern life. Plumbing, electric, heating: features we must have now. It has a perfection in its facade that's undeniable.
Beautiful and I have always admired it. It must be miles of floor to mop. It's so large that should you need a holiday you merely travel to the opposite end of the house. You could run into maids you haven't seen in years. God help you if misplace your car keys. Might be faster to buy a new car. House training a new puppy? You can forget that. Have I made the point how large this structure is?
It’s owned by the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust. The house and estate is part way through a multi million pound restoration but is now very much open to the public. It was originally the historic seat of the Earls of Strafford 👍
If Castle Howard, Syon House and Hatfield House count as independent I'mma hafta to include those in my list...well, actually, I haven't seen 7 independent houses yet...in reviewing my guidebooks, they've mostly been Eng Heri and Nat Trust. Definitely going to have to consider some of yours during my next visit to England. 😉
Castle Howard is a personal favourite of mine. Hatfield too is incredible! I hand picked the 7 historic houses in this list as I think they are real hidden gems and offer something different to the mainstream properties. They are also available to book via the HeritageXplore website. Hope you enjoyed the video :)
Fabulous! I hadn't seen all of these before. Incredible. Boughton is so pretty. Harlaxton is intimidating at first but as you become familiar with it the more finesse and delicacy you see. Love your channel. 🎉
Castle Howard runs a delightful Christmas event, where the rooms are decorated to a festive theme. You can walk around and see the rooms and the "story" of the massively impressive festive decorations. I went in 2023, it was a peter pan themed and so pretty. They had a temporary shop extension and cafe in the back, the food wasn't worth the high cost IMO but the shop was lovely, all the different things to see, from lake with play area, the gardens, the main house, garden centre and the entrence courtyard had a cafe and shop also. And peacocks roaming between cars in the carpark which was novel. I also like that no cars past the entrance. To get to the lake or main house from the entrance courtyard, you could walk or use their tractor train which was so cute. Disability access was difficult, they had it but it didnt cover all areas, was slow and had long wait times, especially for the main stair case stair lift, but thats normal as most architects, even these days, dont think about disability access.
This is NOT The Real Downton Abbey... Come on ...Cute as this house is... Its NOT in the same League as Highclere Castle...I've visited Newby a couple of times...Its really nice and worth seeing BUT !!!!!!!!!!
English Heritage membership also grants free access to National Trust properties (such as Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire, which you featured in your helpful video).
Hi, very well presented commentary though like you we belong to all 3, which makes for cheaper holidays, your mention of BH & NT life membership is intriguing for in the long run could be cost affective, and otherwise it would really matter.
