Join me as I explore Japan's culinary world, visiting farms, breweries, and all sorts of places with connections to the food and beverage industry of Japan.
I started this channel by creating Japanese recipes and sharing them with you, but in doing so it has inspired my curiosity, and I want to learn more about where this food comes from, how it's produced, and how the artisans around Japan contribute to it all.
If you know of an interesting spot in Japan, or have a buddy in the industry who would be happy to appear in my videos, leave me a comment or send me an email and I'll look into it!
Nice content. The filming and editing were excellent. It was easy to understand and fun. And best of all, it looked delicious. As a Japanese person, I was very happy to see this content. Thank you very much👍 Have a wonderful day🙋♂🙆♀
NHK just had a video on Nihao and Yagi-san 4 days ago (Winged gyoza: A family's turbulent journeyーNHK WORLD-JAPAN NEWS). Did you work on that shoot? It wouldn't be wrong to call Yagi-san the GOAT of winged gyoza!
Haha unfortunately I can't say I was on that shoot, but he did tell me that NHK was coming soon, I believe it was partly because of his 90th birthday? I didn't see it myself!
Yeah, Yagi san is quite concerned about keeping the flavour consistent at every branch, so I think he's a bit hesitant to go much further than Yokohama! You'll just have to look out for it next time you visit Tokyo 😉
Hopefully off to Karuizawa for a few nights next year. The 'Hamptons of Japan/Internationally inspired food' thing after a week of ryokans appeals to me. Any and all suggestions for great food or ambience is welcome.
If you're looking for upmarket international food, you should definitely visit Harunire Terrace. There's a bougie Indian restaurant and an Italian restaurant, among others, as well as cafes and bakeries. Otherwise, there are a few places between Karuizawa Station and Kyu-Karuizawa, which is the street featured in this video. I hope you have a great time there!
Thanks for slurping insight . I'd love to see video on how much Japanese I should know when going on my first trip to Japan for a month (during Autumn). How much did you prepare to know before you came to Japan? Any apps that are helpful? I've got Google Translate. Look forward to your next video!
I’ve been thinking I should do a video on that, and you’ve convinced me it’s a good idea! I’ll start some planning for it. Google Translate is actually very good these days, especially for taking photos of text to translate it. You can also use DeepL for text, but that may be less useful when exploring
Thanks for this. Looking to book a flight for a 3 week trip and was considering getting business at least one way or at least premium economy. The recommendation of premium economy at the end has sold me that, that might be the answer :)
I'm so glad it was helpful! Yes, premium economy definitely makes the flight more enjoyable than regular economy, without hurting the budget too much. You get a decent amount more space and comfort. If you do end up going business one way, I would say do it on the way there so that you have the most conserved energy for your travels!
More and more tourists are adhering to rules here, but what is still going on are Geiko/Maiko paparazzi & foreign RU-vidrs from India & China etc who stalk and follow the Geiko/Maiko across the district so they can upload the footage onto RU-vid for ad revenue.
nothing against jp knive i love them. both different animals. get your western in shop to put new edge and adopt good fine steel rod. horizontal slice tomato like nothing
Man I wish I knew the first rule too. Because I don't like slurping, as in it doesn't feel enjoyable. Need to send this to my buddy who's like, "Franki you need to slurp as a sign of respect"!
there're tons of places to see in Kyoto, especially there're beautiful gardens and temples along side philosopher path. and yeees❤ Kanazawa and Takayama are less crowd and even more beautiful.
Nice video. But, many tourists are entitled but wont take the time out to learn to speak any Japanese. How would these tourists like it if someone touched and harassed them? Treat people how you want to be treated. Have manners when you are allowed entry into someone's home. You would want a guest to respect yours, right?
Ooh that's a tough call! I would probably say Sapporo if you're going to spend a long time there, because you can go and explore more of Hokkaido from there. But it's just a few days or you want easy access to Tokyo, Karuizawa is a good option!
I really like your videos! Straight to the point but still packed with thoughtful and easy-to-understand information. This video was helpful as I'm about to go on a solo ~20 day Japan trip (Hokkaido, Tsukuba, Tokyo, and Kyoto😅) to attend a conference and meet up with study abroad/college friends. I would love to hear more advice for solo (female) traveling for my future trips, especially related to planning and budgeting. Keep up the great work✨
I'm so glad to hear you found this video useful! It's a little bit of a detour from my usual style, but I'll see if I can put together some sort of planning/budgeting video at some point. That's amazing that you're coming for such a long trip, and to so many places! What season are you coming in? (I hope it's not the sweaty summer)
@cassandra_lord Unfortunately it is during the summer, but at least June rather than July/August. I remember the heat/humidity being no joke when I studied abroad before. All the videos I've watched so far have been great, so looking forward to future ones🌸
It is very interesting. Only foreigners talking about banning tourists and know so much about it. But we who actually live in Kyoto have no official information about it!!!!!
Cassandra, this is a really clever intro to ramen! Props to your props--really clever! I might have mentioned that the kansui in the noodles greatly affects their chewiness. You should do a vid with Frank from 5AM Ramen and visit a great hidden gem.
That's a good point about the kansui! And very interesting that you should mention 5AM Ramen, I came across one of his videos while researching for this one. I'll try reaching out to him!
I'm not sure when exactly you took this flight, but British Airways runs the Airbus A350-1000 and Boeing 787-9 for the two daily flights to/from Tokyo. It looks like you were on the 787-9. The A350-1000 would've had the much newer BA "Club Suite" seat, so you might've inadvertently downgraded yourself to the old seat by accepting the earlier flight :O
My theory is that I was on the 787-9 anyway, because I had the cheapest business class tickets, and I was on a similar plane on the other leg. I have no idea if that theory is correct, but it would make sense to me that the more expensive tickets would have the nicer planes!
I make a cheesecake once a fortnight for my parents, I've been using the same recipe for several decades...cream cheese, yogurt (raspberry or cherry not too much sugar and no modified starch) and whipped cream. It's quite light and hint of pink, but maybe I should dump the yogurt... and clouds looks more successful than...poop
I'm going to make them again this week! As wind and rain remove any of the cherry and apple blossom (they are not usually out at the same time) - thought about adding some home grown petals...
That's kind of the whole point of the harsh title. The headlines actually want to you to believe that it is a city-wide travel ban as a way to discourage as many people away as possible. Seriously there's way too many people everywhere. It stinks! You can't smell the cherry blossoms. All you hear around you are people speaking in English, Korean, Chinese just like North America. Every stupid event, every tourist spot, every popular gathering is becoming like Itaewon. Places with narrow alleyways get scary dangerous within seconds!
The food presentation look awful. If you don’t mind transit, I highly recommend Qatar. I fly to Asia once or twice a year, but prefer transit with Qatar instead of fly direct with BA. ANA is not an option for me as I am Oneworld loyalist.
I didn't find out the plane type at the time but I'm fairly sure it was the 787-9. I also have a suspicion the 787-9s are cheaper than the 777s, because their suites look nicer, but I don't know for sure. I hope you get the comfiest version on your trip!
