I'm 40 plus, married, and I'm officially an empty nester. I have attended Dave Canterbury's basic survival and won the top spot at one of his advanced survival classes. I was on History's Alone Show and spent 64 days practicing my skill while surviving on Vancouver Island. Hunting, fishing, and bushcrafting are my primary hobbies. I love to learn new stuff and I hope I can teach some of what I have learned.
It doesn’t take very long. Depending on the battery literally seconds. It last forever so long as you store it away from metal. I’ve only seen them lose power if they are stuck to metal, the metal can become magnetized taking away from the needle.
@@LarryRobertsbc Cool, thanks! I’m setting my stuff up right now to try this. - Just tried it and I’ll be damned! How cool is that! Great vid Larry thanks for the knowledge!

I just finished to watch season 2 of Alone yesterday, I enjoyed every moment you were in it. Your authenticity was truly inspiring and you made me look at my take on life with a different perspective, thank you so much for this Mr Roberts. This morning I discover your YT channel, makes me so happy :) Can't wait to watch this movie!
Ahh a version with sound, and it sounds like a great project hope to see it. Looks like you are keeping things on the lighter side or maybe it the lack of the beard.
We invite you to collaborate with us on a particular project. We want to offer you one of our flagship products from the BeaverCraft bushcraft line to feature in one of your upcoming videos. In the field I've used the side of my steel striker to smack small chips off the edge of my chert to make it sharp again. Makes a world of difference in getting enough sparks. Dull chert is useless for sparks.
Hey Larry, I just saw Season 2 of Alone - just wanted to say I have enormous respect for you as a human being. Watching you over the course of the season I both laughed and cried numerous times. I was incredibly moved watching you push yourself to the limit and I commend you for being your raw, honest self. I found your journey very inspiring - more so than any other contestant I've seen in the show so far! Also, can't wait to watch you in season 5 Mongolia! I see you don't make many videos anymore but I've followed your channel and Instagram. Hope all is well with you and your family.
What a nice comment. Thank you very much! We are all well and I hope you and yours are the same. Thanks for the follows and I definitely post more on IG than anywhere else. I hope you like season 5! I loved Mongolia!
@@LarryRobertsbc Congrats on a great showing in season 5, Larry! Just finished it. You absolutely kicked butt in Mongolia - right from the start of the season I knew you'd be among the last folks out there. Round 2 of your war with the mice was great stuff. Also really enjoyed some of your musings towards the end of the season, especially about the "sweet" and "sour" things in life. Props for going out on your own terms and once again wishing you all the best! PS. the birch goggles were iconic!
I just received my shirt from Gail and it's fantastic, even better than I had expected. The shirt fits great, is super warm and very comfortable. Gail was extremely easy to work with, and answered all of my questions. If you're thinking about having Gail make you a shirt, just do it and you'll be glad you did.
What blade steels can be used for flint striking? I know any high carbon, does that include powdered steels like CPM-3V? I believe O1, D2, A2 and SK5 can be used in addition to 1095. Quick question because I just did my brake and Rotors, I should be able to get sparks striking it with flint, would you agree?
I do not think cpm-3v will work well, I think that’s more of a stainless steel. Stainless steels can throw sparks, just very poorly. I am not a car guy so I’ve never tried brake rotors. I do know folks make knives out of the leaf springs, then they need to temper it.
How is the shirt holding up after years of use? And is that her heavy wool or medium? I've been in touch with her and getting ready to order a shirt. Thanks very much.
I'm no expert but Lofty Wiseman recommends looping the lanyard over the thumb and across the back of the hand. It's secure but is easily to ditch if needed. I tried it clearing brush and bramble, it worked just fine without being restrictive. I'd be interested in your opinion.
I was shown that method, but I never really practiced it. Honestly I’m not a huge fan of lanyards, but maybe if I practiced with it more I might change my mind.
Just watched you make your net just now on Netflix in Australia. Beautiful! Humans are the tool makers. That was a thing of beauty! Nicely done and a game changer for survival.
Larry, im not sure if you will get this or not, my name is Mikey Helton. I just finished watching my time on Alone season 10, and I wanted to give you a shout out. You are a crazy awesome guy, and I f@#*ing hate rats too lol, although they are tasty when the birds and fish are scarce. Good job buddy and happy trails.
Hey man, I really appreciate that. I hope you had a good journey bud. If you ever want to talk hit me up on a dm on FB or IG. If you don’t have those my email is larryrobertsb2b@yahoo.com.
Good review. I'm thinking about asking my wife for a nice knife for my birthday and I am considering this knife. I'm also looking at the PKS Kephart XL. I just want a really nice knife for camping and hunting. I would be interested in your thoughts, if you have time. Thanks!
I have not personally tried out the PKS Kephart. I have however tried the Genesis quite a bit. I love it! I will say though that a hunting knife and a Bushcraft knife do different tasks. A scandi grind can chip on bones if you are not careful. Having said that, I have but he’d game with my Genesis with no problem.
isnt it that the sparks come from the steel and not from the rock and you only need to find a rock that is hard enough to spark a piece of steel? I could be wrong but this is what I learned about steel. Naturally flint will spark.
I have to tell you that I am just now watching the Mongolian Alone series and your battle with the mice. I laughed out loud when you hit them with the bear spray and the air horn. I know you don't win, but you are easily one of my favorite contestants on Alone.
@@LarryRobertsbc I hate the little bastards. We get them in the house, and I drowned one in the dog's water dish after it did a perfect swan dive off the counter and landed in the middle of the bowl.
@@LarryRobertsbc Thats was very interesting and useful info Larry having a thicker and not so Sharp edge for obsidian.👏👏👏😁👍🪨🪨🪨💥💥💥🔥🔥🔥 Bravo! And Thanks From New Zealand.🌏🌿🌿🌿🥝😊🤙
