@@Jonnyvonwallstrom I will be flying out to a pretty remote area in the Canadian Rock Mountains and will need to pack a pretty minimal setup. I imagine that if I pair this with the diffuser in a 5in1 reflector kit, I should be able to get a pretty soft key. What do you think?
Was in Tahoe area, the race starts in Olympic valley outside Tahoe and then 100 miles over the mountains into Auburn. Was staying in Tahoe Donner mostly. Great place!
Yeah I had one other Bolzen light that us 60w LED but I don't feel like it's nearly as bright. Probably 5 years old though... But often times I feel like this light is just enough to light any interview
Could possibly work. I should test that out. Feel like it would work for sure in low-key scenarios but not sure it's enough if it's a daylight room. Probably would work if its a silver reflector but white might not bounce enough. Just guesses though...
I’ve been making RU-vid videos for a while now and short films and the one problem I have is getting great audio. This mic might be the answer I’ve been looking for. I could get great things done with this especially the documentary I wanna make.
I think if you want xlr it shouldn’t be a problem since it’s battery driven and doesn’t need phantom. Otherwise the 3.5mm cable that comes with it works for those connections.
Awesome review! I love that this mic has a wireless mode and a safety track. The Comica VM30 will be a great tool for when I am on solo shoots for film, commercial, or tv. I could benefit from safety track or wireless mode.
This mic will really help me focus more on recorded audio. Currently I shoot everything with an on camera shotgun microphone and audio is secondary to video capture. Using a wireless boom will help me be more intentional about the audio that I capture and being a wireless capable mic is such a big plus!
Thanks for sharing your wisdom Jonny. I never even considered that there would be a range of audio level specs specific to different deliverables. It makes sense, but I don't know what I don't know I guess... As for the Comica, it's cool how it can be used on and off camera, wired and wireless, without any add-ons. With the run-n-gun scenarios that you mention, getting the mic in an optimal spot becomes a lot easier, especially for a solo operator. Typically I pack an on-camera mic AND a shotgun, AND an external recorder. But with tech like the VM30, the same mic can be used for on-camera and boom, with the added benefit of not having to sync in post. There would need to be some clean-up, but the latest Resolve audio magic does a pretty amazing job of that. Awesome video! Hope you are well, Sir.
I would like to give this mic to a friend of mine who is trying to get into film making but is 100% broke because of their living situation. We have been talking about different ideas and I think that my friend would be able to make some really cool stuff :)
Jonny thanks again for great content! I'm shooting an exciting documentary about an athlete trying to qualify for the olympics while facing a mental crisis due to an old trauma. I'm often in the environment of winds and where many people are talking. This shotgun mic would help so much with getting better atmo sound in addition to the lav. I'd love to use it all the time!
We had stories that ended up having bad audio and no audio at all. It is frustrating :-( Winning this mic will give us assurance that we will be getting the sound bytes especially on impromptu scenario in our documentary production.
I get that influencers need to make a living and sometimes have to accept sponsorships. However, the AI software you're promoting here doesn't align with professional storyboarding. It seems there's a misunderstanding about what "storyboarding" truly involves. Creating pretty pictures to convey a scene's mood isn't the same as storyboarding. For professionals, it's crucial to quickly capture the right perspective, camera position, angle, framing, object placement, and the relationships between subjects but also camera-movement etc. . A quick sketch is not only much faster but also more accurate and effective for team communication. If you want to learn how to create genuine, functional storyboards, check out the book "Parasite: A Graphic Novel in Storyboards" by Oscar-winner Bong Joon-Ho.
Storyboarding is just the act of visualizing your idea. That totally depends on what type of project you are making. There’s not a one fit all solution. This is just one tool to help you sketch that out, either for a pro creator like myself… or to communicate with others. Most pro filmmakers who pitch projects do it with other people’s video stills rather than sketching it. That’s who I think this helps. If you are good at drawing and want a specific perspective, great, do you. But I just rather make the film…
@@Jonnyvonwallstrom I don't want to ruffle any feathers here, but there's an important distinction to be made. Storyboarding is a specific technique in the film industry used to visualize shots, focusing mainly on framing, composition, camera angles, and movements. What you're referring to is creating images for mood boards, not storyboards. My point is simply that sketching out storyboards by hand is much faster and more acurate than using AI software. You don't need to draw like a pro-simple sketches will do just fine. For mood boards, sure, AI can be a good tool that safes time and money.
Thats just the traditional way of storyboarding. The problem with that is that I don’t think I’m the only one that is ridiculously bad at perspectives and drawing. So we’re left to storyboard our ideas in whatever way we can. And for those AI will simplify that process. Cause it’s not like we lack creative ideas or stories… Just like digital cameras democratized storytelling so does this. But yeah, if you can draw that fluidly, storyboarding is great as you describe it is great. I just don’t have that ability, I’m a photographer turned filmmaker. I have zero drawing skills. Still I work as a professional director and have been for over 20 years. That means having to deliver storyboards for clients. While I did draw one while making a film for Netflix I will admit it sucked balls… so here we are…
It is! Was in a vacation resort and no studio so background is AI then I put graphics on in canva. This is where I think AI works well. Usually I use it for mockup thumbnails to test variations out, then I shoot a picture from that
That would be awesome and probably the correct way to progress. Would probably speed up adoption as well. Might happen eventually though, cause I used to pay for Jasper.ai long before chatGPT was usable in any way. Now Jasper feels totally useless but it did help evolve ai prompts a lot
Oh yeah! And if you try the motion in ltx you’ll see that AI still has a lot to improve before generating video that can replace filmmakers :) also I think ai won’t create personally unique stories anytime soon. Most feel the same if you don’t direct it, similar to bad filmmakers work of “art”
This is so open and honest. For me personally, God has made me aware recently of how much time I have been wasting, rather than using the time I have to bring to life stories I want to tell through Filmmaking. It's a balance, I'm making the choice to create more! Thank you for this. I pray you have continued success!
Can you hire someone to pitch a script, or help you sell it? It's a true Story, About Evel Knievel's Body Guard. Gene could be famous for several things that have been written in a Hollywood movie. He was a motorcycle jumper, heavy weight boxer & more. Gene's father is the subject of THE ODD COUPLE movie. His real Father is Ernie Nevers. Who has fame in 3 Professional Sports. He invented the hook shot; Pitched to Babe Ruth; Saved the NFL & has the oldest 4 NFL records. Ernie was a first inductee to the NFL Hall of Fame. George Clooney made a movie; Leatherheads about him. Gene's GREATEST privilege is about the lives he has saved, even famous people. Just by an inspired thought that came into his head... instead of using his fists. His fists that were going to fight Ali, Joe Frazier, George Formen, and the heavy weights of His day, before Rocky Marciano died in a plane crash. He even had a thought come into his head when he invented the first Skido, and did a stunt in San Francisco. He sent the blue prints to Honda and Kawasaki with no patent. But that voice in his head said "undo your helmet strap", and it kept his head on his body to respond. The movie script starts with his famed WW2 Command Bomber Pilot mother, buzzing him and his brother in a Crop Dusting Plane, bombing them with toilet paper rolls. Gene was the longest touring motorcycle jumper in the world, flying a bike through flames of fire, when there were only 5 motorcycle stuntmen in the world. He's highly regarded in the stunt world. You can watch him speaking to a King, or doing Evel Kneivels Funeral on our channel. Thanks for your advice. Ceci
Irony, this video is pretty boring, top level boring and you are talking about storytelling. Revisit your videos once in your phone once before uploading and make the required cuts. The content is great but too boring, hence the views
Pitching a documentary to Netflix requires a strategic approach to ensure that your project stands out and aligns with the platform's content needs and audience preferences.
Do you guys know how much talented you are or is it just me!? Please keep making more music i will support you in everything.. keep bringing this beautiful sound
Man I’m happy I found you again. I discovered you from watching the Pearl of Africa and really enjoyed your content, learned a lot! Glad to see you are still doing what you do best.
Im heading to Spain in a month and Im retracing my steps from when I was 10-14 living in Spain. Im scatterbrained because its my own story. I hope to get it together in a month. I landed an interview with one of the most Famous bulllfighters in Spains history thats stull alive. and Possibly a Mayor of a big Spanish City. Stoked but Nervous.
Trust is such an underrated element of documentary success. Building it takes some time and consistency. I have two specifics to share. The first is to help motivate and explain to them why you want to do something or spend the time on something . I find that explaining your desire to make the story complete is helpful. People want that. They don’t want their story to be incomplete. The other is a little trickier and that is how to ask hard questions and get authentic answers. I had a subject give me a very soft answer to something important that happened in the documentary. After a little time of listening to them I explained to them Ididn’t want to put that answer in the film because it would make them look like a bull $ hitter and I didn’t want that for them. I really did want the best for them, and that resulted in a much better and more dramatic answer. This is actually trust and knowing what your film is about before you hit the edit.
I like the perspective that you're making a STORY....not click bait. The story itself should keep people around because they want to know "how is this going to end for this person"
This is so inspiring. I watched some of your recent releases on the Craft channel as well. Such a good film to watch! Do you still film the running scenes with your phone?
Thanks! I do! Going to test to see if the Osmo Pocket 3 gives me as good results but haven’t tried it yet. Chances are it’s just as good but lighter setup.
@@Jonnyvonwallstrom Thank you so much for replying. BTW I'm not a film maker but I loved your thought process. I find it relatable on other areas as well. It'd be a pleasure to learn from you watching your content. 🙏
