@@terangikaiwhiriakemara Me too! Looking back it was such a waste of time. Today I canceled all my channel subscriptions which have a focus on product reviews. What a relief!
Good to see you back. And as someone who has had some relative success on RU-vid cutting fast and doing dumb (Minecraft) stuff, I couldn't tell you what makes a channel successful. But being unique is key, and you've always had and continue to have that! I look forward to watching this develop.
Didn't expect you here Mumbo! I love your cinematography and it's been great to meet you in person too. Because of you and Jonny I took the plunge on the BMPCC4k!
Awesome to hear brother, you should! I think the platform is maturing and nobody has figured out how to tell traditional cinematic stories that work for the masses :)
creative north is really where i found so much inspo as a budding filmmaker, im so happy to see you return to the platform ( you inspire a lot of people jonny keep doing what makes you happy)
So happy you’re back Jonny! You’re one of the main reasons I started out making a documentary film. Thanks for being honest about the industry it’s really refreshing
'They cut fast & do dumb stuff, is that what people want to watch?' As an indie filmmaker, I feel that too. Your channel is great, it's just that documentary is a niche audience. Glad you're posting again ☀️
If you have a Look at all the documentaries beeing Releases on the major Plattforms, documentaries don't seem to be a niche at all though most of them are true crime stuff and not very creative. Glad to have you back Johnny! ;)
I was thinking about your channel just the other day. Welcome back to RU-vid. What seems to work on here if finding something that does well and doubling down and serving that community. Hope you make it work
@@Jonnyvonwallstrom I completely feel you. I just made a video about how I’m going to make bad movies- because I’m tired of making ‘professional’ ones for other people lol
I’m late to the party. BUT this is so serendipitous - I remember coming across your channel when I was trying to break into documentary filmmaking. A few years later I had my own TV burnout and now I’m working on pursuing more of my own stuff, including coming back to RU-vid too 😊😊 I’ve subbed and am looking forward to following your journey!
Hey Jonny, short hi from cologne! So good to have you back. And no I had not forgotten 😃. Your creative struggle is so recognizing. For me it wasn't television but small clients with frustrating demands. Still trying to push forward. Looking forward to more coming from you. Thanks for being the motivation and not losing your fun approach. Just keep being you and I'm sure there will be new people joining the ride. Such a fun video!
Really boy, your are master!! I really missed this shor films!! I fuking told you every time, your channel is one of my favorites in all youtube comunity !! Dont quit, being unique is key, and you've always had. I cant wait the next shortfilm !! im sharing this stuff !
Can’t believe your back Jonny!!! Love your channel. I know the struggle with the film industry all to well. Giving this RU-vid think a bit of a shot too. Looking forward to journeying along with you 😊
I took your course checked your channel and was sad that you've stopped uploading on RU-vid. I can't tell you how happy I am after watching this video. You don't even know that you've been a mentor for so many people. 💪 Let's get going. We are here to support.
So glad to have you back! I was worried you'd actually been captured in another country on a documentary or something. Weird to go from regular posting to ghosted. Glad you're safe!
thanks mate! actually just hade a couple of projects that was sweden specific during and post covid so international stuff got put on hold for a while.
After working in the industry for the past 8 years in various different roles (Started as PA and worked my ass all they way to CAM OP/DP on commercials) I "quit" last month. I was sooo tired of climbing this dumb ladder that led only to external validation and zero internal satisfaction. At the top of the ladder after working for decades you get to shoot dumb uninspiring Netflix or CW shows where you have zero creative control and are basically just doing manual skilled labour. I am still going to continue working as a gaffer or cam op because I have to pay bills but I am going to put all my creativity energy into my own work. God speed Jonny!
I don't get the draw to some channels either. Although I must admit I was laughing with you in the transformer suit. I feel your pain and searching for motivation, glad I watched to the end the Goggins part was great.. Just found your channel today, your breaking new ground as you showed up on someone (me) new feed. Definitely talented,....
It's so great to see you back! We've missed you! Sorry to hear that things were rough for you! But for what it's worth: my husband and I are delighted to see and share in your "YT Life" again! Go Jonny!
Great to hear! Was just thinking maybe I should break down however this video performs since I didn’t upload for three years. What would you like to know about starting a channel?
@@Jonnyvonwallstrom lol...everything!?! Probably more in line of storytelling. I'm learning to film now...have LOTS of raw footage, and wondering how I might piece them together to make a...dare I say, profoundly entertaining story. My focus is traveling the US on a motorcycle.
@@Jonnyvonwallstrom Awesome man! Yt still is the best network with most reach. Many TVs have RU-vid and it is the new television, even better than netflix :)
Took me a second to remember the name of your channel when I first subbed, but yes. It was definitely Creative West... I've been suspect of the overlords for a long time, never went into the "industry" because the lack of control and respect they give you. Rather make content I enjoy and people I know would enjoy. Love this video, it's kickass. I'll be watching whatever you upload.
Woooah! You're back!!! AMAZING! I took your documentary filmmaking course a few years back - so much value! The unfortunate story you experienced is common in the media and entertainment industries. In order to prosper you have to play to their tune, bow down and trade your heart for the privilege. The wide spread problem is due to the 'lifestyle' we see of others we're sold a dream and fall under the impression that the media industries as a whole is fantastic arena of likeminded individuals who actually care about the common issues. This is a fundamental flaw. Companies invest millions if not billions on producing content, marketing, distribution, licensing, this list goes on... my point is, they're focused on the bottom line and MUST make a return on their investment. They're not in the business of investing in our ideas or taking risks on how creative we are. Making money is the only goal they have and don't give a s**t about our ideas no matter how great they are - they want to make what has mass appeal and they stick to a proven format. We don't get paid for our opinions, we only get paid for our time. The only way we can earn a living whilst making the films we want to make is by not relying primarily on earning a living from making film at all. The most important practical skill we can learn (other than learning how to live off-grid) is how to make more money without having to work all the hours under the sun, through investments, collaborating with the right people, etc, etc. and only then can we live the dream we aspire to. One love, Jonny - keep on pushing!
Thanks for the encouragement! Yeah for sure just gotta keep on keeping on. Hoping to get YT to be my main thing cause the traditional industry is just stealing creativity
@@Jonnyvonwallstrom Happy New Year brother. Yeah, focus on what you need to do for your own happiness and creative freedom. I'm working towards the same endeavour, so hopefully we both get one step closer 🙏🏾
Thanks for coming back :) I did a school doco for my son's performing arts group just before covid hit and your channel helped heaps. Sorry, I'm not a high tech film person like all the other peeps here, I'm just a mum and a creative who uses a lot of different media and software to convey my work. And it does get difficult to remember much of the technical stuff when you're not using that particular media on a regular basis. Point is, you were my 'go to' for remembering filming stuff because you had this emotional edge to what you were doing. There's lots of film techies on youtube who can tell you how to film ... but they're not story tellers. You have that gift which is why I was drawn to your channel. I can't give you advice on how to make money ... I'm pretty useless with that side of things with my work lol. But yea, it's all a journey tho. We’re here to experience all of the emotions. Anyway, I love this channel @GreenRenaissanceFilms, you might know it … sometimes other people’s work can spark ideas or a pathway we didn’t really think of. Take care and look forward to seeing more of you. Ngā mihi nui from New Zealand :)
Dude, you're crazy as fuck, but you're one of a kind. An inspiration... I'm a visual designer who wants to leave the main job and create films with soul (I'm chasing that, whatever it is). I spend all my money on equipment... yes, it's true. Poor but happy. Right now I'm in the middle of the trip, I need time (and money to pay the bills) but I don't have one or the other... So it's a mess.
I used to do that, I set a goal this is what I need to make films like I want to make them. Freelanced as long as I needed then I just started making my films. Worked out but I lived off of little money in the beginning. Patience...
@@JonnyvonwallstromThanks for sharing your experience. It is a comfort to know that people we admire have already gone through the path we are going through.💥🤩
I'll fight the Industry with you Jonny! You inspired me to take up grading all those years ago but all I ended up doing was glorified LUT work on crap GoPro footage clipped to hell. The exact opposite of all I've ever wanted to do... which is bring beauty into the world. 😔 Your return has come at such a brilliant time for me as I'm leaving the hired gun space myself, and wanting to re-dedicate myself to actual true unfolding horizons of creativity. 💛Go get em' Jonny, we're all here with you!
@@Jonnyvonwallstrom I consider you as a master of faded look so I personally wait for you to go back and not to go with the flow on this 😁 but will love the content anyways 😊
@@Jonnyvonwallstrom Nooo stick with your milky whites! It's what sets you apart and soon, you'll have all of RU-vid falling in love with this look! (Like what McKinnon did to moody landscape...)
This is awesome! Jonny is back!👊 I personally have learnt so much from your videos, especially around the bmpcc4k release time. Here to support you in your RU-vid takeover! Love from the UK.
Great to see you back! I've just picked up a camera again after a few years of trying to suppress my creative side. I got a real job and it sucks. If you can make doing what you love work, even if you are just getting by then it's worth it. Have you thought about Patreon? I'd support it. Looking forward to seeing you more on YT. ✌
Thanks mate! That’s awesome to hear! I’ve thought about patreon but never really managed to make it work. That’s one thing I am considering though since I could make more informational stuff in that context without being slapped by the algorithm
@@Jonnyvonwallstrom Some inspo for a YT channel done right. Which he's monetised through Patreon ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Pb1ABLu8w3A.html
i know people say dont add black bars to your edit, but youtube always switches the aspect ratio to omit black bars, if you edit in widescreen like in your video. So I'm wondering how to force them to do the black bars without auto cropping. Unless the black bars only show up when you make it fullscreen, which is understandable
Really nice video, dont even need to be so fancy, just like your story and thoughts, i get interested who is this person and what projects and stories can he tell about, also with that huge knowledge bank, tutorial channel could be big
Thanks mate! Yeah think I need to test a bit in the beginning to see what works best. Ideally I will find a way to tell stories that work well with the algorithm without loosing my soul :)
Tempting, but I value being an entrepreneur too much. I want to own my time as well. I’ve always subscribed to doing it small though. That’s why I often do most creative roles.
@@Jonnyvonwallstrom Most of our stress in life is about the difference between how we think life should be and how we find that life is. Call it a 'five year plan'. If making docs is in your blood and now you're bitter against making docs.....do you see what your current plan did? You're playing with fire if you made a deal that killed what you love most and now you no longer want to do it. Better to do something in a completely different field, pay the bills and do your own thing on nights and weekend. Also, try to learn from this experience. My guess is that they wanted someone more commercial and all of us have this row to hoe: how to be creative and then sell it.
"they cut fast and do dumb stuff" caught me off guard ;-) I think i´m subscribed to your channel for a couple of years (didn´t you have a different name?) and back then you where one of the view who talked about documentories. Hope to see more of your work in the future! if you make another documentory and need a camera man/ drone (fpv) pilot - message me ;-)
Great to hear :) will for sure talk more about doc filmmaking but will try to find other ways to make them than tv cause it just messes up the joy of making them
The name of the game today is sponsored video's! Try to find something that fits you and the channel and you can make decent extra income per video :) Welcome back!
Mr. Beast the biggest youtuber on the planet making video's for the masses about absolutely nothing. It's our failing society that's at fault here. Being a creative I share your pain and frustration. There are days where I want to give up, give in and get a 9-5 job where I can turn my brain off and punch out at the end of the day. But I know this will slowly kill me inside. So I endure the life of a creative and plow on forwards. So good and so awesome to have you back!
I was like "wtf is this dude talking about. He is solid, a knight at the Knights table of film making and there is no way is he can fall in battl...." @1:39
I always liked your videos. I'm curious what comes next. Hopefully nothing like "I show you my whole private life" thing, I can't stand this sh*t any more. Many RU-vidrs I liked went down that path which made me quite their channels. I enjoy watching interesting personalities but I don't have to see their weddings or holding their babys/children into the camera.
I only want to make one film and to make millions of dollars. And just buy a house and live a solitude life. Just build a wall around the house and just be by myself. I thought it would be that simple. They didn't teach that in college... I had to find out for myself. I realized that I have to deal with people and be on TV and do interviews. I am not interested in doing that. Dealing with mean stuck up people. I learned from other people that the film industries are evil. I didn't mean to compete with other people or to get some actors off of backstage and other sites... showing my ID and all. Since I am 50 something years old...
You know with RU-vid, and the interwebz you can get by without it. But I’d say it usually is harder. It has the potential with total creative freedom but 1. You need to decide on a small niche and be willing to commit to that so your audience stick around (made the mistake of doing RU-vid too wide spread before) what audience, and I mean what individual do you want as your audience, make everything for that person 2. You need to be true to your uniqueness and build on the strengths only you have and outlook on life so your stories are unique. First because you’ll loose interest if your not passionate about it. Secondly because you need to stick out so much that people don’t want to be without you 3. You need to decide and then build a way to monetize that idea otherwise it won’t work. For me that took years to first mess up, then quit and then 2 years of thinking to figure out so it sounds easier than it is. Then it’s all about just telling stories for a long time that align with that, and with a long time I mean until it works
@@Jonnyvonwallstrom I agree. So I had to cancel the film because one of the actors said that he was having a hard time memorizing the lines. And the other actor said the lines are toooo long. Other actor suggested Q cards. That will take me forever to write all of that on the Q cards. So I had to cancel the film. The Actors are not listening. I told them that i had to rewrite and just put some simple sentences. Or just write another script. So I wrote another script and the actor was willing to cast some actors for me, but got mad because I didn't add a character for him to play, so he just said "I;m done, you're going to many different direction. I'm like... sigh. It is my film project and my money. If he stuck around, I would have listed him as casting director, voiceover, and as producer assistant. But noooo he wants to CONTROL the film directors. So I told him that that is why you're just going to forever be in Independent films, just playing security guard.
I totally understand the frustrations you've faced with the actors. Collaborating on a film project can be tricky, especially when everyone has their own ideas. It's essential to strike a balance between creative input and staying true to your vision as a filmmaker. In situations like these, clear communication is key. Explaining your perspective and the reasons behind script changes can help actors understand your vision better. Collaborative filmmaking can be incredibly rewarding when everyone is on the same page, but it's not always easy to achieve. I’ve failed at this many times and have realized I shouldn’t collaborate with anyone. Now I’m picky because I know many don’t share what I see as great filmmaking. Remember, it's your project, and ultimately, you have the final say on creative decisions. Hopefully, you'll find a way to work with dedicated and passionate individuals who align with your vision in the future. Keep pushing forward with your filmmaking journey! 🎥✨
I wouldn‘t mind at all seeing you doing gear reviews to pay your bills. After all, this seems to be much easier than having a real job ;-) And I bet that even your most boring review would be 500% more creative than all the other shit on yt. Don‘t make it too hard for yourself just to stay „pure“. There is always one death you have to die as we say in German. Why not take the easy money? I am one of the ones that have regularly been coming back here to check where you are. You would have to do a lot of nonsense to make us go away finally ;-)
