Good review but however as far as the jimping goes, this knife was named “Caper” because it’s designed for caping game and processing meat and anyone doing this would probably wear gloves as an added layer of protection as game can have bacteria that could cause an infection if it gets into your bloodstream. So, for any other purposes you probably won’t even use the jumping that much processing cardboard for the dumpster anyway. I personally love the knife as an EDC.
Have any of you idiots ever caped anything in your poor, pathetic lives? Sad state of affairs. This is what happens when so many boys are raised in 2 mom/2 dad homes.
I no longer have the Zulu. I have a frontier 12 with a trolling motor. I had both at one time I only got rid of the Zulu because I didn’t feel like paying again for more mounts and registration. They are both good kayaks. Honestly I liked fishing off of the Zulu better. It felt more stable had a low deck. But the nucanoe is good too. The seat is more comfortable and it is plenty stable as well. So you can’t really go wrong.
@Topcat thanks. Honestly I originally was leaning towards the Unlimited with an Xi3 but seen that Zulu I-Guide and started liking it. I really like the open concept and the width on the Unlimited.
I run a m1 caper for edc and I really love it. The jimping is a tiny bit sharp but that’s an easy fix with some sand paper. It feels great in the hand to me.
I Couldnt agree with you more... IMO you are mainly paying for that incredible blade!! For that price the handle should be as sick as the blade.. I want to own a Rockstead, and will wait until i see one that I feel is worth that Price point.. The blade is absolutely amazing though!
It works it’s not the best. Old town probably has them beat on the drive. But the yak itself I like better then a old town. Never tried on the rods. You probably could but not sure.
@@semperfipt It's a flipper style half forward finger choil. Liong has done that on several of his models like the Warrior for added grip uses and left that portion unsharpened. It allows a bit of choking up, but not necessarily meant to be a full on choil since not everyone likes them and he knows that, but he does. I've seen this on some other knives that have this type of smaller forward choil to compensate for the edge.
@@spanishnavaja it’s a flaw. It’s a big sharping choil. You don’t make half a finger choil. You either have a sharpening choil like a sebenza or a finger choil for your finger. Not a half flipper finger choil. It’s there so you can sharpen the whole edge and the company that oem the knife didn’t sharpen it correctly.
Wow that demko is beautiful! If you ever want to sell that I know someone who is a huge Demko fan and that speo knife is his grail. Would love to surprise him
Thanks for this review. Not much out there talking about the pedal drive of the kayak. Honestly the drive is what pushed me towards old town. I really like the platform of the Zulu but the mechanics of the drive is the most important factor for me.
All things you have to consider. Old town drive is definitely better. The platform itself I would take the Zulu. I love fishing off it. If it had a better pedal system it would be one of the best kayaks around. Overall I’m still glad I bought it. And I can’t fault you for going for the old town either.
Ok guy wow way to show me the light lol. Yes jimping does get better. And it’s still flat ground up to the flat. Ever seen a hollow saber ground because they exist too. It’s a great knife perfect no and they updated it since this video.
Why didnt you get the nucanoe pivot drive so you could use it on both boats? It wouldn't be hard to rig it up. Im not sure if the tracks for the nucanoe seat fit. If it doesnt they have a base that will.
I don’t hear that many great things about the nucanoe drive. Plus it goes off the back of the boat. I fish around a lot of vegetation it would be a pain to get back there to clear it. I just don’t think it’s a great design. Their peddle drive system was an afterthought of their boat designs. Why do you think every other company puts it in the middle.
Great review. I got mine earlier this year, I too wish pedal system mount was designed differently. I like the rudder, comes in handy when I’m drifting. I lock the black cover down when I’m traveling to spot then when I get in creek or marsh I just take it off so if I have to lift quickly. I fish some ponds around my job big enough to kayak and man I love standing on it catching bass.
I got 10$ throw float from Walmart and sit on that. I have never used those bolts to hold down my drive hole plates. I got the plate tied to the drive mount with a short piece of 5 50cord so I don't have worry about flying off on the highway.. Never had a problem. I ordered the extra seat pieces also. My wives Zulu rudder cable had the ends crimped on at a angles that put it in a bind, so I had get it replaced. The tomahawk rudder is vast improvement over the first ones. I have 16 months of only saltwater on mine and have say they have held up well.
Hey you got the same one I got! Good to see more people doing full reviews on the Zulu especially ones who own other brands. I started with the Kahuna, then got a Voodoo, and now have a Zulu. Never tried a Wahoo, I was attracted to the SUP hybrid the Kahuna offered and just kept buying the newer more stable models. To me owning a Kaku brand has been kinda like being in a tribe, it seems most of the owners stay dedicated to them even though they have their flaws. I agree a quick release would be cool on the drive cover. What I do now is just leave the screws out when I'm on the water, that way if I need too I just pull it off real quick. I think the reason there are only 2 seat mount brackets are so it will allow the seat to slide back all the way. They hit the back of the kayak if you have them on the back of the seat. I'm a short fella so I'm going to add 2 more on mine as well.
Yeah it’s a awesome platform with some minor flaws. Mainly the pedal drive. Hopefully they will be like other companies and improve it over the years. And I enjoy your fishing adventure vids 👍👍
@@semperfipt I agree. I definitely like the open deck on the hybrids. Thanks for watching the videos, I got a new camping adventure coming up in October, not sure if I'm going to use the pedal drive or just paddle..
This reminds me a little bit of the olamic whippersnapper. I wonder if the whippersnapper is worth three times or more the price of this one? I'm going to ask around
i've always liked this knife.. and believe it or not i tracked it down it's gonna be on it's way to me.. it will remain in my collection! great video thank you for uploading this
@@jenniferrich1938 yepp it's still on there too..just bought a brand new sportster want to do some upgrades so Unfortunately i will be selling it...it is like a Tank sure is a sweet knife
I'm just now thinking about buying the White River Caper. I watched many reviews. You're the first person to apply some critical thinking with regards the finger comfort of the jimping and choil. I can see where that might be an issue. All the other reviews just call it awesome and leave it at that. Good review.
I do have one of these and like it a lot, despite its shortcomings of slight lock play and sharp handle edges, almost a standard feature on production knives
I put a Kwik thumb stub on the knife which allows for one hand opening and greatly enhances the grip by providing a stop for your thumb. Thanks for the review.
Small world... Watched this vid last week since I traded for a Firetac... get the knife in today and it's your exact knife (thumb ramp delete, same small trails in your vid). Great knife!
John Eli I have a Dozier small belt knife that’s probably my favorite. Production wise I like the jx6 they have improved the white river since this video as well still a good option.
@@semperfipt Was considering the Caper as a EDC utilitarian/self defense option. But having largish hands your review has got me wondering. For the $$$ I don't want to be stuck with something that pinches my hand every time I use it. Have their been any improvements in respect of this?
Vaughan Starr they round the edges now and it is much better. Size wise the jx6 is still more comfortable for larger hands. I don’t think it’s too big to carry. But the caper is definitely smaller and easy to carry. So kinda pick your poison they are both good knives.
@@semperfipt Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I like the Caper as with that point it looks at though it could fulfill a tactical role (deep choil really locking the grip on there) while still being utilitarian. This is important as most knives scream murder weapon in their design. And rule of law where I live states that while you can carry a blade, you cannot carry one with intent. If it is deemed you have, you can be charged even if you have acted in defense of your life. So, a blade that could be genuinely used in the day to day, but still had that tactical option if needed is what I am looking for. Not the latest Ninja Special Forces Commando Midnight Death Dealer 3000, of which there are plenty.
As for the pocket clip, I like it. The beauty of this knife helped to make me over - look the choil inadequacy and that small bulge at the edge beginning. I have the green micarta. The mod you made is a good idea even if modifying a GOAT, makes in non-factory. Mine is M390 steel. But this is 14 months later. AF
