As a Maker, have to say the video is excellent, and great information for the beginner riders or someone looking to get into the enjoyment of horses. Looked at your other videos and was surprised you haven’t continued the series with follow up videos. Highly recommend it, you have a way most don’t. Would start with care, maintenance and looking after your equipment properly and why. Move into saddling properly and mounting etc. Hope to see more and I’m sure your channel will grow and help many.

I just finished watching. My head is spinning from all the different types of categories, breeds, and distinguishing factors about horses. Phew! Definitely going to watch a few more times,till it sticks.

I just started volunteering a a local horse farm. I didn't know there were so many different types of horses. I was told to get a certain type of horse, and the person was calling it by its breed(?), and I didn't know which it was. I just know them by color....or at least I thought I knew. There are even different ways to call their coloring, which I'm still learning. I'm going to watch this video a couple of times so that the next time I go back I know what people are talking about.

Instead of making videos clean up and spend time stimulating the animals
@SistersHorsingAround
@SistersHorsingAround 4 месяца назад
First off, horsemen and women don't "stimulate" horses. We train them, desensitize them, bond with them, work, ride, and spend time with them. But to "stimulate" them? No. Besides this horse is a wild mustang, if I were to "stimulate" him, he wouldn't understand and would be scared. I work with him on his level, not mine and certainly not yours. Second, I was out to do morning chores when I saw this and decided to record. This was the first thing I saw when I got close to the horse area. Morning chores include feeding, watering, and cleaning pens. I have to do this everyday as part of managing horses. Which btw, his pen tends to be the messiest. He uses the bathroom a lot, that's just how he is, Third, you are telling a youtuber not to share videos. That is what a youtuber does! I shared with my viewers what I had to deal with that morning on my way to start the day with my horses. I had already shared the first time he got out. As a youtuber, I share with others what goes on in my life as a horsewoman, and this was one of those things.

I ride a Friesian cross a lot now and he's one of the smoothest horses to ride but so happy and willing and pretty athletic. He loves jumping. Cross country is not a problem (just be realistic about the height they can reasonably jump). Only issue is he could easily overheat if you aren't careful and skin issue flare up are always something you have to consistently look out for. He obviously does great in colder weather so it's better to keep them further north for obvious reasons.

Thank you for sharing about the horse you ride! Friesians are wonderful horses! Honestly, ware not surprised that he would love jumping. Our Gypsy Vanner loves jumping too, even cross country and galloping. It is truly amazing how unconventional these horses can be. Not many expect Friesians (or Gypsy vanners) to be able to do stuff like that, but we are all for proving otherwise! 😉😁

Oh wow, both names are great! I think that is so cool that he looks like a Clydesdale! It's really amazing how different the horses can be in Devil's Garden. Even though they tend to be on the stockier drafty side, they all have different looks, shapes, and types. I just love the variety!

Can you explain more on why zebras, donkeys, hinnies, mules, etc, minus ponies and horses, aren't horses and ponies, even though they are part of the Equidae family? I watched this three times and I can't catch it yet. Thank you. 😊
@SistersHorsingAround
@SistersHorsingAround 7 месяцев назад
Sure! It can be quite confusing how zebras, donkeys, hinnies, mules, zedonks, and zorses are related to horses and ponies. The reason is best understood by focusing on the scientific names and categorization. All Equines share the same Equidae family, but they are not the same species. It's their species that sets them apart. Horses are known by their scientific name, "Equus ferus caballus." We have a subgroup of equines called, "Asinus" which categorizes all the species of donkeys, kiangs, onagers and asses in the world. There is a second subgroup called "Hippotigris" which categorizes all the species of zebras. As for the hybrids such as mules, hinnies, zedonks and zorses, they are crosses between the species and don't exactly have their own special scientific name. So think of all these different equines (horses, zebras, donkeys, hinnies, mules, zedonks, zorses, etc) as members of the same family. They are just different cousins to each other, for example the zebra is the horse's cousin. Zebras, donkeys, horses, ponies, and the hybrids all share common characteristics such as having 1 toe per limb, their hooves are hard, and share the same body parts. But they also have their differences, for example, they don't all make the same sound. Horses and ponies whinny and neigh. Donkeys, mules, and hinnies bray. While zebras can bray, they make a very unique sound that is called barking that the others can't do. Donkeys and zebras don't have long manes like horses, theirs stays short. Zebra and donkey tails are different from horse tails. Their tails are not as long, and the first half of the tail is is covered with the same hair as their coats before transitioning to tail hair. Donkey ears are longer than horse ears, while zebra ears have a rounder shape. Horses come in a wide range of colors, while donkeys are only grey, black, brown, the occasional tan (depending on the type), or spotted. Zebras are black with white stripes, with the size and shape of their stripes changing depending on the species of zebra. As for the hybrids, mules are a cross between a female horse and a donkey stallion, and they come in a variety of colors. A hinny is a cross between a horse stallion and a female donkey, this crossing is not as common as the mule. Mules look more like horses with huge ears, while hinnies look more like taller donkeys. Zedonks are a cross between a zebra stallion and a donkey female. They can be either tan, grey, or brown with white stripes on their shoulder, barrel, and legs. A zorse is a cross between a zebra stallion and a female horse. Zorses come in lots of colors depending on the mom, but they will always have the zebra stripes regardless of their color. Then there is the rarer, hebra, which is from a female zebra and a horse stallion. There are zonies which is a cross between a zebra and a pony mare. Its all super cool and interesting how different and unique they are! I hope that helps and answers your question regarding their differences! 💜💙

I actually never knew a zebra isn't a horse. I want to know why that is, though for now I got on my 'I want to learn about it' cap on. Including why, well I know why, but need more information, on other equines that aren't horses but are still part of the horse family. One of them is a hinny, and there isn't a lot of information about them considering how rare they are. I don't know what genders the hinnies are, but from what I found, the female hinnies are called mare hinnies, male hinnies that aren't gelded are called horse hinnies, while gelded hinnies just like any male equine is gelded are called geldings. But of course, mare hinny and horse hinny - a non gelded male horse - may not be the exact gender terms.

This is months late, but I remember seeing you on Britta's TPE channel. Now this video popped up after watching her intro to Mustang Magic. It's great that you have many horses, a beautiful property, and that your whole family's involved and supportive. Most of all, though, it's even greater you can get a few mustangs at once, and you bid on the older ones 10+. (May I also say that I'm impressed by your videography skills!) Anyway, time to watch one of your newer vlogs... 😉

Awww, thank you so much! Your kind words truly mean a lot to us! Britta is a wonderful person and so much fun to be around. The older mustangs do have a special place in my heart. Even though you do have to work harder at convincing them to accept you, its truly a humbling experience when they do come to accept you. Brego has really surprised me, I wouldn't have ever guessed that he would be such a sweet heart. He has become another heart horse for me. Rohan is all about the food, but he loves my sister. As for Valiente, he is really reserved and needs the most time. He has come to trust me somewhat, so we have a very businesslike relationship, lol. I am really looking forward to posting their progress this year!

I'm sorry I was always told I was not to hold on to my horn due to that was only for people that were bronc riding or training purposes. And I have been riding since I was three years old I am now 58 years old and still to this day I do not hold on to the horn and I teach my riders do not touch the horn you are taking your life and your hands by doing so! I have had my hands caught between the horse and the horn as they will rear and buck it is not a good idea to hold Your horn
@SistersHorsingAround
@SistersHorsingAround 8 месяцев назад
I understand where you're coming from, years ago when we were younger we had a horse trainer that taught us the same thing. But as a horse show judge, I differ in view about the horn and hope to fan the flame of destigmatizing the horn. In addition to training horses, the horn comes in handy out on the trail going up steep terrain, doing the extended jog while competing in ranch events, and even commonly taught to use amongst those who do barrel racing. It is only penalized in specific disciplines. As for bronc riders, saddle bronc riders have a saddle that doesn't have a horn, but touching the saddle with your hand is illegal and cause for disqualification. Then there is working ranch bronc riders that use everyday saddles, and they can grab a rope or nightlatch attached to their saddles with their free hand. But I don't think they are allowed to use the horn from what I've learned about the discipline. There is nothing wrong with using the horn outside of competition. The horn is a tool for you to use, not just some decoration. I know that "not holding the horn" is a common thing that is taught to beginner riders, but honestly, its one of the things I think needs to change in the horse world. We shouldn't be made to feel ashamed or afraid to grab the horn. The purpose should be explained to new riders, and the proper use of it too. They should be told up front that it is better to learn to ride with their seat and legs than to rely on the horn, but we should not make them feel bad or wrong, just because they grab it in a moment when they couldn't control what their bodies are doing. I feel like it is better to let them grab that horn, then to balance off the horse's mouth. I would rather wean a rider off the use of the horn than to have to retrain a horse that has gone sour due to excessive use of the bit and reins.
