The decision to rob Shohei Ohtani of being a two-way player is the dumbest decision made by the Dodgers owner and team manager. If it were their intention in the first place, they could have gotten Ohtani for $500 million for 10 years instead of $700 million. They could have saved $200 million! Making Ohtani only a hitter instead of a two-way player will remove a lot of the attraction of fans and advertising money to the Dodgers. This is a lose-lose situation. What a stupid move by the owner and manager! They should allow Ohtani to be a two-way player for at least three more years. Then, after that, or if he does not produce as a pitcher, make him a hitter only. When they negotiated the $700 million contract, I wonder if they discussed/agreed on Ohtani being a two-way player or just a hitter. If they agreed with Ohtani playing as a two-way player, they pulled a fast one on Ohtani. There is no "skin off his nose" because he gets the $700 million whether he plays as a two-way or a one-way player. However, the mystique and magic will evaporate if they continue to pull that stunt on Shohei. We all know he wants to be a two-way player, so he should be able to do that for at least three more years. Old fans who had quit watching Dodger baseball have returned because of Shohei Ohtani. They will again disappear. New fans like me will also stop watching the Dodgers. The fan base following by the Japanese in Japan will also subside drastically as will the advertising dollars. How stupid can the Dodgers owner and team manager be? Very stupid, indeed! As Forrest Gump said, "Stupid is as stupid does." Bye-bye Dodgers! Your top management sucks!
The Dodgers' owner is not very bright. If he didn't want Ohtani to pitch, he could have contracted with him for $400 million for 10 years and saved $300 million. Apparently, he either didn't know what he was doing or tricked Shohei into coming to play for the Dodgers, making him believe he would be a two-way player for $700 million. In either case, the owner's integrity does not reflect well. We want to see Shohei Ohtani play as a two-way player for at least three more years! That is what his appeal to the fans was all about.
Shohei's parents must be bursting with pride seeing what their son has done and is doing. Japanese children are supposed to be "The Healthiest children on the Planet" (which they attribute most to their healthy diet). Plus his parents must have also taught him his good manners and modest demeanor.
I agree with his decision. Why risk pitching again, if pitching is what caused his elbow injury which required the Tommy John surgery. Let him continue as the Designated Hitter where he's certainly made an outstanding contribution to the Dodgers team!
Naw. Even pitching part-time, he'd risk another elbow injury (like so many other pitchers). He pushes himself too hard to just pitch part-time - he'd probably push himself too hard and risk another elbow injury. His contribution to the Dodgers as their Designated Hitter is more than enough - and the only risk is breaking more bats (and he's already broken ten in his career).
For what "reason" does he NOT want to be a pitcher again? Is it because of the injury when playing for the Angels that required the Tommy John surgery, which he's still recovering from?
Ohtani doesn't live in Hawaii YET. But he is in contract and is buying a new home in a luxury resort on the Big Island of Hawaii. He plans on living there during the off season. In the mean time, he is also in contract to buy a home in a luxury neighborhood in Los Angeles, which will offer him a short 20-minute commute to the Dodgers ballpark.
Ohtani has brought millions of new fans to baseball. It's so exciting to watch him play - and even to hear the cannon sound when he hits the ball so hard. He's such a phenomenon - and a very nice guy too. He's just SO likeable. Love this guy!
