Genial, maravilloso, bello !!! Una interpretación magistral, sublime. Un homenaje al más grande de los maestros, GIUSSEPPE VERDI !!! Enjoy the Opera, VIVA VERDI !!!
Recorded September 1927 in Berlin with Leo Blech conducting and Friedrich Schorr as Wotan. Amazing performances by all and incredible sound quality considering the year.
I was so lucky that I began my interest in Opera vs Ballet in my early teens; just as Dame Joan began to take Centre Stage at Covent Garden. But the best was that she was still performing as my daughter reached that age and so I was able to take her to see Dame Hoan perform in Toronto during her last visit to Toronto. Through my teens I spent many nights on trains to Cumberland, later to Yorkshire returning after being at ROH CG. Barely slept as I relived the perfection I had heard. My "Ill spent youth" was spent on OPERA in the peak of it's perfection!. Now, as I near 80 years of age I am so glad I did spend my money on that, unlike so many of my peers who went to "Pop" Concerts.
Sutherland truly had a magnificent voice. The ease with which she sang coloratura passages were unsurpassable. I must say that I think Beverly Sills was nothing to laugh at.
I caught her last ever performance of the role in December 1983 at Covent Garden, having rocked up for the second performance from university which was cancelled due to illness. She started out a little tentatively and then there was a bomb scare. Having cleared the theatre we returned and suddenly she was on fire. I particularly remember a stunning and very long High D at the end of Act III. It almost blew the top of the theatre off!! Apparently Bonynge wanted to do it in Australia in 1985 but it was cancelled on cost grounds I gather.
Apart from the incredible singing.. oh, those bows! NO one gave a bow like Joan. That head thrown back.. the shoulders back and chest broadened... magnificent in every way. The throw back of the head always gets me. BRAVA!!!!
La voce della Sills era chiara limpida, una buona dizione. La Suterland pesssima dizione e quel timbro ovattato e poco chiaro specie nella tessitura media. Cercare di caricare video meno ridicoli
This has to be the richest, silkiest, most fulsome rendition of this piece in the most gorgeous set ever made. It is not a piece I would associate with the Queen of Wagner's Valkyries but she was such an artist who had such immense control of her voice that she could sing anything written for a soprano and glorify it. Her companion took full advantage of the opportunity to wind her own voice around that sparkling gem. Brava!!

She’s certainly earned the right to her opinion, but I’ve seen some modern dress productions that were marvelous. If the director adheres to the spirit of the piece, the sets and costumes can represent any period. And I saw the Met Angelica production she was referring to, the one eventually taped with Renata Scotto. Surely one of the greatest performances on the Met stage. Scotto (and Strata’s) made you believe in those lights; one didn’t need a statue of Mary or a little tyke in a suit.
There always comes a point in these older performances( and the early ones too!) where you say to yourself, "My God, how is she doing it? " And privilege of those who were lucky enough to be there strikes one as well.
I had the wonderfull luck to proforme with her at the Kings Théâtre Edinburgh 21st Edinburgh Festival.I was the solo dancer.she and Richard take me with them to see the New York Ballet.we had a very wonderfull time it was just fantastique and magique to work with them . Edward Arckless ex Royal Oper Ballet Covent Garden London and conservatoire de Ville de Paris France
"The way people sang...today, I wonder." Truer words have never been spoken about those who perform puccini and then attempt the high art of bel canto masters. Even those during her time trying to screech the notes and phrasing/legato. Absolute ear sore
