This channel is all about homesteading. We currently have both French angora rabbits and meat rabbits, chickens, miniature dairy goats, honeybees, LGD dogs and barn cats. I post videos three times a week about things that go on around the homestead. You'll find videos about rabbit colonies, milking goats, hatching baby chicks, training farm kittens, and preserving produce from the garden. Some videos are filmed in a vlog style, while otherss are more formal and instructional. Each video is carefully made, edited, and posted in the hope that people like you enjoy and learn from them. I hope you'll join our family on our homesteading adventure.

As far as I'm aware the actual reason rabbits are meant to have so much timothy hay in their diet is not because of problems like GI stasis. There are plenty of other fibre food sources and you can even get timothy hay pellets for them. The real issue is that rabbits need to be chomping on hay to avoid dental issues since their teeth always grow and if there isn't the action of eating hay to wear down their teeth, they will eventually overgrow. If molar roots overgrow then your rabbits will be in pain whenever they eat and you'll be in the realm of needing to remove molars which i think can be problematic.

I mean this in the nicest way possible, but putting information like this out there is irresponsible. You absolutely can feed rabbits only pellets and they are unlikely to drop dead (some can live long lives on pellets), but its not whats best for them. Rabbits are fragile animals with sensitive digestive systems and improper diet DOES increase the risk of health issues. However, that doesn't guarantee that they will get sick. Thats not how these things work. Saying that you fed your rabbits all pellets for a bit and they didn't die, doesn't really prove anything. Its like saying you had an uncle who smoked and still lived to be 90. Only about 10-20% of smokers will get lung cancer, meaning 80-90% won't. That doesn't mean we should encourage smoking. People raising livestock have different priorities than people keeping rabbits as pets, and thats fine. Everyone can handle their own animals whichever way works best for them. But encouraging something that all the research says increases health risks, without acknowledging or explaining those risks is irresponsible. Lots of rabbits will do fine on a pellet only diet and I'm glad yours are thriving. That being said, a pellet only diet increases the risk of gi stasis, intestinal blockages, dental disease, obesity, ect. People should know about those risks so they can make an informed decision. And again, an increased risk is an increased risk, not a guarantee something will happen. That doesn't make it a myth

Pellets are not unhealthy, as many commenters suggest. They have everything that the rabbit needs. But hay should always be given for gut health. You need pellets for growouts, as you admit yourself. Free range kits will also weigh less anyway as they're exercising.

We have been saving wild/orphan chicks, they love chopped tiny bits ofluncheon meat ( spam) and crushed up ramen noodles slightly cooked soft. Since Spam is a bit pricey, we usually buy a can of luncheon meat from Walmart.

We have solar on our rabbit barn and I have fans that automatically turn on when it gets to be 80 in the barn. That works ok until it gets in the 90s. I am not sure the fans do anything for the rabbits comfort but they do keep air moving through the barn and ensure it doesn’t get hotter than outside. We have done the ice bottle and tiles as well. We actually ended up making some outside cage racks in the woods. It is generally much cooler in the woods even when it is 95 out in the sun. I know not everyone has woods as an option but that has been the easiest solution for us and there is no hassle or preparation for hot days.

really enjoyed your movie. I will have rabbits soon and was hoping I would be able to somewhat potty train them? I was planning on starting in cages but making a colony soon and using the cages for older grow-outs instead once that is setup.

I'm likely to go this route for my meat birds. I think Black Australorps will be an excellent option. I love that the hens lay a lot of eggs, which gives me the ability to have more eggs to sell or feed back to our flock(s).
