We travel the west looking for scenic back roads and trails.I even get the phantom 4 out once in a while. If you go back far enough you see my night job in the 80s and 90s. Rock on
@@donm8011 Thank you for your prompt response. I love the fall and looks like Utah is on my bucket list. Since I will be flying into Salt Lake City, I love to know if the peak time is constant or somewhat constant so I can plan to visit next year. Your recommendation is greatly appreciated.
@@MiGoi-ej4yz Some years we get an early snow that changes things. Fortunately there are a lot of low elevation options to see also. Thanks for watching.
Yes. Totally doable if you pay attention and the road isn't terribly washed out. I am always surprised at the stock vehicles I have seen on these trails over the years..
I did this drive the opposite directions a few years back. It thought the drive was spectacular around Logan Pass. Your video was the most boring you did no justice here. I thought Road To The Sun was a gorgeous drive 15 out of the 50 miles. The rest in between mountains.Logan Pass Section the most spectacular. No stops at the most scenic parts .If I were you i would not waste peoples time with the East to West..video..bad bad thumbs down here....
One of my favorite parks. Been there many times, starting almost 70 years ago. Lots of changes and now so crowded there's a reservation system. Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching.
@@Miners1 Thanks for watching and thanks for your comment . I rewatched S3 E3. What a trip down the basin. Hoping to go back soon. Amazing views on top.
@donm8011 Thank You. I have to Take Grandma up to be with Grandpa. My wife has a pic of the Ouray 20 sign with cross. This was a perfect help for that. Thank You
Fun to see the trail ran from 550, AND to see the difference what two weeks made in the height of that snow. Stayed up near the top. We ran that on July 9th! Thanks for sharing what an amazing place to play!
We spent a week in Ouray but most passes were still closed. I don't think Black Bear opened at all this year. Amazing place to play for sure. Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching.
No, we didn't go all the way to the lake. I just wanted to see that mine I had seen on Google maps and make it up Mt. Antero before dark. Having been to the lake before it is very scenic.
I remember watching the world famous French woman rally driver Michelle Mouton racing up this hill climb in an Audi Short Quattro when it was a dirt track all the way. She held the record for fastest ascent for many years. Awesome then, awesome now.
As she said "you did excellent"... but I didn't ... I was pulled out for 45 minutes to cool down my brakes 😣 yeah .. feeling guilty... Thank you for sharing the ride and , refreshing my memories ☺️
I admire your willingness to drive this road which is in stark contrast to the overlanding routes that are both scenic and relaxing. Not so much with this road with all the tourists!
Finally got around to watching the last video of yours for Black Bear. Looks like the first switchback is the hardest. Would you agree? What year and model is your Jeep? Anothe great video!
Thanks. It is for sure. My Jeep is a 2012 2dr Rubicon, so that turn is easy for me. Notice how I hug the driver side wall. It gives me a better backup angle. A lot of drivers approach it to low and have to fight the passenger side wall. The short wheelbase is really helpful for these situations. Take as long as you need to get around.
@donm8011 thanks. I have a 2010 2 door Sport. Alot of mods though... lol. Do you remember what time of day you did the trail? Will be rewatching these videos alot before our trip. Yours are some of the best videos I've seen. Are you on Instagram?
@@mcgvr1092 We left Ouray at 8:00 and got to Telluride around 11:00 with lots of stops. We have been over these trails many times and earlier is better for less traffic. No instagram. I can barely use RU-vid lol. Thanks again.
Planning a trip to Ouray next August. Black Bear Pass is on our list of trails. Loved watching these videos. You make it look so easy. 😂 what advice on the steps would you give? Looks like you took an outside line on them. Thanks
The camera never shows just how off camber parts of this trail are. Outside line works till you get to the real narrow part then hug the wall because you have no choice. Having sway bar disconnect really helps to level things out. Slow and steady, watch where your wheels are. Chances are you won't be the only one so watch the rigs in front to see how they respond to different parts of the trail. You'll do just fine and don't forget to soak in the scenery. 😊
@donm8011 thanks for the advice. Looks like some of the trail could be done in 2H. Were you in 4H or 4L the whole time? Plan to watch your videos on Imogene next. Any advice on that one? Love all your videos.
I do 4H on the way up except for the waterfall towards the top in part 1 when I use 4L, but you can go around it if you want. I use 4L on the way down to save on brakes and with 5:13 gears it crawls. I'm sure you can use 2H if it's dry but there are loose rock areas that 4H is preferred. As far as Imogene is concerned same rules apply, common sense, take your time, get out and look if you need to. The Telluride side is easy. The Ouray side has a few areas of concern but amazing views as well. Since this is a 2 way trail you'll have figure out what to do if you meet someone on a narrow spot, but it's all part of the fun.@@mcgvr1092
I tried to come up to Colorado Pass today and just as I turned to finish the switchback at the 4:11 spot of your video a rainstorm hit and soaked those slate chips they use as gravel. I could get no grip. But I was in truck weighing twice a Rubicon with 2 tons in the back. Nope. Wasn’t gonna happen. Nice views though.
Another great video. Really enjoy watching your videos. Couple of questions. What software do you use to edit your videos? And what would you say is the biggest challenge doing these trails? Thanks
Great video Don, heading up there in September. Did you guys go from ironton thru corkscrew, hurricane, California to silverton? If so about how would I need for that.
Another great video Don. Question, do you use a polarizing filter? The colors are amazing. Thanks again for posting, my wife and I are looking forward to the next one. 👍
@@dennisr7452 No filters, just default settings on GoPro 7, 4K, 30 fps, wide.I do take the built in lens cover off the GoPro, seems to improve clarity.
Thank you for continuing this series, and this is even more spectacular than the ascent up to the Pass. I will make sure I do this trail if I make it back to Colorado in September.
You are SO fortunate to have such amazing trails to discover. I live in England, we have NOTHING so dramatic. For me, it is another way of experiencing through you, my travels through the Southwest from 1989 until 2012. Too old now at 79 but love your videos. Thankyou. Ps, what vehicle do you drive and because it appears very quiet, is it electric ? During my visits, I drove Isuzu Rodeos, Jeep Cherokees, and my favourite was Chevvy Blazers.
I drive a 2012 Jeep 2dr Rubicon. The motors quiet but the cooling fan gets rather loud. You may not have mountains, but you have some of my favorite music groups.
A great trail, thankyou for taking me along. I live in England, I've tried to follow your route on my DeLorme Atlas/Gazetteer for Colorado. I would appreciate more specific detail of the area you are travelling, I cannot find your route. Many thanks. Ps, what elevation do you climb to ?
I'm not familiar with the DeLorme Atlas but if you have access to Google Maps, it shows all the trails quite well. Approx. 7.6 miles south of Ouray on highway 550 take county road 20 and 20a which is called Corkscrew Gulch Trail. If you see the Red Mountains, you're in the right area. Similar to the map at the beginning of the video. Elevation over the passes is 12,000 + most of the way. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
@@donm8011 Thanks for your reply, I'm now 79 and have hiked , camped ( tent), and climbed extensively in the four corners since 1972.. When I started, my generation only had maps. I guess old habits die hard eh ?
@@martinforrester8249 I understand. I'm 70 now and my wife refuses to use cell phones. I enjoy technology but it is overwhelming sometimes. Nothing wrong with being old school.
As soon as I see the "Ragged Old Flag" on a red hood of the car I know it's gonna be good...very good!! Thank you a lot of showing such places that I can't reach to see by myself... huge excitement to me... always!!❤ Respect...👍💪🚙
I always enjoy seeing the notification that you have posted another video. You always have interesting trails and drives, plus the video quality is great. There are no trails like this in the East, mostly woods or beaches. Thanks for posting. 👍
I always enjoy your "no frills" productions (no music, no narration), and the camera angle/mount is perfect. I'll definitely be putting Corkscrew Pass on my to-do list. Will there be a Part 2 for this video, did you continue on down the other side of the pass?
Thanks for your comment. Yes, probably 2 more. Corkscrew to California Pass and California Pass to Animas Forks. Engineer was still closed but I have older videos of that run on the channel.
I like to call it the hidden gem because Ophir, Engineer, Imogene, Black Bear, and the Alpine Loop get so much attention and for good reason. Thanks for watching.
