1965 was the first year for insert style cam bearings, they should have been in your kit as well. Get the double thrust bearings as well as a new oil pump.
Thanks ! I’ve run into other project so this agin is on hold. I’m not sure on the bearings? This one didn’t have bearings for the cams. Seems like they are part of the case
They suck. Which sucks because I live in Wisconsin. Roy does ok machine work, good luck getting anything the same century you order it. They always have the same excuse. Power outage, broken cnc machine, back order. It's been like that at least the last 20 years.
@@4cgarage510 Its my practice to replace it as it's a relatively inexpensive part. No harm in re-using the one you have provided it all checks out though. Check the gear drive still fits well into the camshaft with no backlash. Stock VW pumps have a steel cover which can warp over time and there will also be scoring from the gears. Use a flat surface (mirror or glass) and some sandpaper to get everything clean and true again. (I find this necessary on new pumps and also sand flat the pump body and gears). It's worth doing as the pump will provide better oil pressure at higher temps, just when you need it the most. Finally, if you do buy a new pump double check the oil holes align between the case and pump body.
Mine is also: Trash, Trash, Garbage, Goner... interior ain't as cheap as i thought. I hear ya! The rear seating area is useless IMO, no leg room & uncomfortable. Makes a good place for EV batteries in case 😅
My first car EVER was a KG. Total rust bucket. I had to change out the tranny before it would run. Had never worked on a car before. I loved it but it wasn't worth saving. You're my hero so good luck to you and let's see another vid.
Just subscribed....Great videos and well presented! I have a '72 Ghia, same colour as yours. Fortunately the previous owner did, or rather paid for a lot of work to be done years ago. In '87 he paid over £3500 for welding....I am hoping it is all still good! Just done a drive shaft oil seal, so easy....and it isn't leaking....yet. Quick question about seats. I had mine recovered and some new padding put in, but I get real back pain after a long journey (I do on average 4500miles a year in it). I wanted to keep it all original, but I am considering changing the seats. No point being really uncomfortable and not enjoying the drive. Would you have any idea what seats would fit relatively easily? I have read Mazda mx5, MGF and Porsche. I am not a great fan of tombstone seats, also might make it even more awkward to gain access to the rear. Cheers, Kev

Mate I'm so glad I found you! I just made my first video on bringing my 61 bad boy back from the dead, check it out if you like. At the moment my Ghia's body is separated. I made a dolly like the one you're looking at making if you haven't done so already. I'm currently making a video of me building a motorized car rotisserie for free out of an old house 'Akro Prop' and garage door motor that I found at the dump. I've decided to give the heater channels a go on my own as well without any real experience in car body repair so I'm totally smashing your videos as I type. Mate excellent video! I'm about to do the exact same thing over on my channel to my 61 Ghia. Watching you do it is really helpful. All the diagrams you see on-line can be pretty confusing. Different story when you watch it being done 👍
@ 4:36 You've got the inner channel and the rocker panel but what about the center divider? There's supposed to be three layers of metal. The heater channel is an enclosed structure and the outer rocker sits over it.
Yep I got all three. I think for the right side of the car I’ll try to buy the whole heater channel as one piece. Even tho I’m not worried about having heat. We just need it for the strength

I think every Ghia rusts there. All the moisture and rain from the air intakes up front just collects and sits there with no drainage. I think to fix that you need to lift the body. But because you cut the heater channel out you need to brace internally before you lift the body. Repair the hinge pillar first, then the heater channel. Check fitment of the door along the way so it closes straight with even gaps all around. I make it sound so easy, lol. 30 hours of work per side.

Yeah happy to see that small section looking as good as it does. The section of the pork chop “idk what eles to call it” that’s closest to the outside near the door pillar is gone. So i need to repair that and that inner side of the fender. Thanks for the comments, I really dig what you are all doing on your channel !
Welcome back :) I completely forgot about the brake hoses when splitting the body, what a mess. The door fits super nice considering the rot and no hinge drop either, result. I was advised to fit a cross brace between each door pillar as the body can flex out quite a bit once the heater channel is removed. It's a pain working around it inside the car but I think it was worth doing.
Finally dude it’s been too long that’s forsure. you’ll have to come out and see it in person. Plus I’m need some help lifting that body all the way off the pan. Lol✌🏼
