I think every Ghia rusts there. All the moisture and rain from the air intakes up front just collects and sits there with no drainage. I think to fix that you need to lift the body. But because you cut the heater channel out you need to brace internally before you lift the body. Repair the hinge pillar first, then the heater channel. Check fitment of the door along the way so it closes straight with even gaps all around. I make it sound so easy, lol. 30 hours of work per side.

As feared, it's worse than expected.....From my experience, that's THE WORST corner where rust hits the Ghia, with so many stuff coming together. Mine looked the same on both sides, but had the added bonus of being hit on the left side too...... When it's done, be sure to spray some cavity wax in the outer rocker, and some undercoating wax everywhere, on the under side..... And keep the holes in the outer rockers clear, so water can drain. Yep, mine was exactly the same. The path to VW enlightenment is one of struggle and adversity my friend. The heater channel is the main reference point for all those repairs. The shorter channels are missing the bottom bit that sits on the floor pan shown at 3.51. They do have the vertical sides that go right up the splash panel which gives you the weld points for the "lamb chop" pillar support bottom and also the outer front rocker. If the passenger side is still intact I would measure the door gap between the hinge and door latch so you have a reference for the drivers side. (I welded in a brace). I did all these repairs with the body lifted 2 inches off the floor pan.

I made a dolly like the one you're looking at making if you haven't done so already. I'm currently making a video of me building a motorized car rotisserie for free out of an old house 'Akro Prop' and garage door motor that I found at the dump. I've decided to give the heater channels a go on my own as well without any real experience in car body repair so I'm totally smashing your videos as I type.
