Keepin' it Canadian, eh! Grilling, cooking, barbecuing, and smoking some of my favorite foods on anything from portable charcoal kamado style grills to larger backyard barbecues!
We do this all year 'round, snow or no snow! Enjoy!
Looking to buy an acorn ... question: what's the difference between an Akorn jr ... good deal now on Amazon ....and an akorn chargriller which every vendor seems to be out of stock on.
Hi there, the Akorn Jr (Junior) is the smaller version of the Char-griller Akorn. The large Akorn grill has a 20" diameter grate, while the Akorn Jr has a 14" grate size. Hope this helps.
Hey quick question why did you cover the stone with Foil I’m gonna use this method I just need to know if I have to cover with foil or if it’s just something you do
Hi there! Yes, they do pretty well in the winter. I'm also in Canada. Grill temps are still high, as long as you don't leave the lid open for too long. Where these really shine is on cold WINDY days. My gas grill struggles to maintain grill temps and the flame will blow out when trying to grill on low. The Akorn Jr. is pretty well insulated and is (for the most part) wind proof!
Love it no talking. Just got one the bring to the cabin, have kamado joe classic in the city and said ya I ain't bringing that up north, did a cook in the city and love it. Put gaskets on both the base and ash tray and she is sealed up nice and tight. Flipped up the back seat of the truck and in she goes.
Hi there, thanks for the comment! My set up is a simple 11" grill grate I purchased from amazon and then an 8" pizza stone I purchased from a dollar store. No water tray or soaked wood, just a few chips or a chunk of hickory or apple wood added just before you put the meat on. This other video shows what I use: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IOfjBpjUAkM.html
Hi, I have just bought the Akorn JR and have bought a 9 inch pizza stone as it's 3 times cheaper than an official heat deflector! Also, why do you wrap the grate in foil please?
Hi there and thanks for the comment! The knife in the video is actually a Laguiole folding knife made in France and I bought it about 25-30 years ago at a sporting show here in Canada. I just did a search and they're still producing quality knives! Front page of their website shows a knife similar to the one I have.....forge-de-laguiole.com/en/
I use nothing but lump hardwood charcoal in it when grilling, which is basically charred wood, so I don't see why not. I've put wood in it to use as an outdoor fireplace, I guess you could let the wood burn down into coals and use it for cooking.
@@denmarksoul1184 Yes, lump is all natural wood, where as briquettes are usually made of sawdust and some sort of binder (like glue or something)....lol.
Looks good and may work. It looks like there is just one burner for the entire unit. If so is the entire burner on for all grilling or is there a control to turn off half of the burner so you can grill indirectly? For example place items on one side (left) of the grill while the burner is on for the other side (right) so you can grill indirectly.
I have a propane blackstone flat top griddle, and a wood, open top cowboy cooker, but I'm looking into something like this weber due to its size its a pain loading my grills up when I go to the lake or river or beach I want something with great portability.whats the difference in the premium model vs the others?
From what I understand, the premium has a locking lid mechanism, but no bottom vent control. I would rather have top and bottom vents for the heat control. The lack of locking lid can always be accomplished with a simple bungie cord. Hope this helps!
Not sure...are you using lump charcoal? (a.k.a. hardwood charcoal as opposed to briquettes?) Briquettes tend to burn hotter but require more air flow to generate the heat. Lump is best for low and slow.
I am a complete newb to bbq, got one of these akorn jr's in the uk about 3 years ago, used it about 3 times...no prior experience of bbq and tbh I am not really into being an amazing bbq cook either, just want to throw some meat on it on a sunny day and enjoy some food. I really want to say though, I am over the moon with this kamado, you can get this to sit at 100c all day long. Lie i say, I have no clue generally and certainly not with any comparison to other grills but other than size, there is nothing that would make me want to buy another kamado. Temp control has been a revelation to me...just open the bottom temp about 0.5 and same again with top and it will hold a really low temp for as long as there is fuel to burn...really impressed with mine...
Looks awesome, I made the same mistake today, grilled some chicken off set. Chicken had some SPG and Yardbird rub. I went over the top with the Jack Daniels smoking chips, and although great flavour the taste was intensely smoky. Got to try the beef. Great videos 🏴👍
Yeah, he keeps printing his text as “C”, but running a smoker at 250 C is the equivalent of 482 F, which would make his brisket a burnt hockey puck in short order.
Some might argue on this one.....but lump is all natural, produces more smoke flavor, and produces less ash which leads to air flow problems while cooking, as opposed to briquettes which are usually made from compressed sawdust.
How’d it turn out lol 3 years later technology has us asking about a brisket you cooked back in Covid times. Crazy times we live in… but yeah how that go😂
@@frygottobe652 lol all Good appreciate you asking! The first one I burnt to a hockey puck size 😂 set it and forget it was a bad idea. I have played with it a bit but am still not at good on this one as I am the homemade one in a 55 gallon drum 🤦♂️.
internet is divided between soak or no soak of smoking wood... The smaller chips that I purchased says soak by the manufactorer themselves. End of the day i think it's matter of what you prefer. Cheers!
I have my Akorn Jr. shipped to the Philippines and am loving it! It's funny because I have the exact same method for my deflector as you. I think my grill i use to set the deflector is 10.5 inches, but it fits fine. However, instead of a pizza stone. I am using a deflector made out of terracotta. My grill was super cheap at like $1.20 and the deflector cost me about $2.00. If I bought and shipped char-grillers deflector. it would cost me like $60 with shipping, no way I'm doing that. The only thing I don't like about the Akorn is they should just provide the deflector plate, it's needed if you buy this grill.
Thanks for this review. I’m actually looking now at Buying a small gas grill with a stand. This looks better and more economical than some of the weber Q grills. There was a charbroil infra red patio bistro grill that I am interested in- , my brother bought that secondhand and unfortunately I can’t find a new one and they only sell those kinds of models in electric which I didn’t want to get. This grill though looks good. Thanks for your comments were cleaning it also
