Tackling the upcoming release for Record Store Day 2024 of Mal Waldron and Steve Lacy's The Mighty Warriors which is being put out by Zev Feldman and Elemental Records. This is a 2xLP release that, as you'll learn from my video, is both really interesting and complex music while also sounding just about as good as anyone could hope for.

If you're new to my channel, what you can expect from me is a vinyl collector's approach to the jazz genre. For years, I've only collected vintage pressings and prioritized originals of Blue Note, Prestige, Savoy, Bethlehem, Riverside, New Jazz, and more classic labels. Lately, with the resurgence of the medium and more collectors coming to the space, the music industry has taken notice and prioritized putting out high quality reissues of some of the best albums ever recorded. Subscribe to my channel to watch me navigate how to rationalize how I used to buy vs. how I buy vinyl records today.

It's well recorded, which means that you can really hear the sound of the room. And this is a large hall, which changes the warmth of the sound as compared to a low-ceiling nightclub. To my ears, I much prefer the sonics of the RSD Shelly Manne release from the Penthouse nightclub in Seattle, where (as here), the sounds of the drummer are key to the excellence of the performance. I'm curious, Chris, about your thoughts about what sorts of rooms make for the best sounding live acoustic jazz recordings.

Great video! I did get to preview these RSD releases, and this one stood out both musically and sonically. I do give sonics equal weight, and had some trouble getting past the sound on some of the other titles. Masterful commentary here, excellent.

Very helpful review! I'm not quite sure I am there on the adventurous side, but am intrigued by the sonics. Tough call!

Great review, as always. Realizing that you are just the messenger, Miles Davis also didn't want his music classified, and he usually made a huge stink of it when asked, but you won't find Miles Davis, Steve Lacy, Mal Waldron or Pharaoh Sanders music isn't being played in a rock or heavy metal club. You won't find the music at an R&B, HipHop, Country, Grung, Progressive Rock club, or classical music venue. It's like trying to tell a person they didn't hear what they heard. Although with Miles and to his credit, he did experiment with Rock, which made it fusion. Herbie Hancock experimented with Hip Hop, but he is still a jazz musician. The appropriate classification is Jazz, whether the musicians like it or not. It is the greatest compliment for a person to know your style and know what , who, and where to go and find it.

Another great video Chris, will you be doing a video on the Pablo reissues?

Thanks. I’m not so sure on the Pablo reissues. I’ve owned some in the past and inevitably while they have sounded good, they haven’t been titles that I’ve wanted to revisit often so I sold them. At this point, across over 3,000 records in my collection, zero of them are Pablo. I think my comments in a video would only rile people up as supposed to being helpful lol
