Thank you for this amazing, NUANCED video that takes into account historical and sociopolitical happenings as to why all this nonsense is going on. There are many RU-vidrs talking about it but none have deep dived into how this is a community erosion problem caused by capitalism the way that you have. The rise of individualistic, entrepreneur based, money obsessed social media and clout chasing has destroyed our community in so so many ways.

Got me a 3 way hanging mirror and started braiding my hair myself, realized I'm actually pretty good. So I'm grateful for the salon blunders, it was the catalyst I needed.😁

26:45 I will say, it’s never a “system” issue. It’s a human nature issue. No matter what system is put in place, humans will find a way to corrupt it and we have thousands of years of proof on that. It is what it is

I honestly feel like it’s 2 things which is: personality and the drive to make “fast money”. When you think of a preschool teacher you typically think of a young woman who is very sweet, and patient or a lawyer who is argumentative, smart, and detail oriented. Certain personalities fit certain jobs. And when it comes down to it, every Instagram hairstylist I’ve ever went to has had the same personality. Super rude, inconsiderate, and just lazy. It’s a mean persons job at the end of the day. I’ve never had a sweet bubbly insta hairstylist. Just a bitter woman who ignores you the whole appointment and is Otp with her friends. Next I think the rise of fast money schemes on the internet like crypto, scamming, nfts, and even real estate, owning your own business etc. has really weighed down on our generation. The value of working hard for a sustainable career is gone. And while I don’t think you should work at a 9-5 for 50 years and cap out at 60k. We also could benefit from some stability. Hairstylist charge hundreds of dollars for a few hours of work to be “rich of hair”. They want to be millionaires off of working out their house or a shitty salon suite. If you can accomplish that with integrity, and good work then that’s amazing. But the way these stylist go about their “business” is insane. You didn’t go to college to study business, which is not needed necessarily, but they have no customer service skills, marketing skills, or anytime plans of longevity. To them it’s a joke and they were good at it as kids and teens and needed something to do since they weren’t willing to put the work in for any other career. Growing up I never doubted that being a hairstylist was a job but now I don’t look at it as a job at all. It’s the lazy way to money that’s why they are rude to clients, cancel on them, and overall don’t value their beloved “business”.

I think if we were all taught how to do black hair in hairschool and in continuing education at our work places then there would be many more options across the board. But I've only had a handful of black clients over the years and it's just not enough experience.

Great video thank you for sharing!! I haven't been to a hairstylist since 2016 when a supposed "curly hair professional" took a pair of shears which is a HELL NO for curly/kinky hair, without my knowledge, to remove bulk from the back of my hair!! I was left with a shorter length than I wanted plus some stringy pieces!! I wanted to knock him the f'k out!! But I left and ran to Target, got some coconut oil, olive oil, moisturizing conditioners, deep conditioners and ate foods to help with hair growth and with ALOT of patience, it took a whole year for my curls to get back to normal!! As far as that hairstylist, they ended up going out of business, KARMA b*tch!!😒

Licensure definitely needs to be changed. There is currently no room for things like apprenticing while there definitely should be! Allowing people to get licensed when they have the experience but haven’t been to a full cosmetology course, allowing people to test out of certain aspects so that they don’t have to spend so much time and money! All of that is possible while still making sure people have the necessary safety education!

When you have an opportunity if you go to each state. Department of professional regulations you will see the states law regarding cosmetology, barbering, estheticians, nail technicians and even massage. These are professions you MUST go through required training and pass a state board examination. Complete continuing education and also satisfy a sanitation and sterilization standards. Regardless of how capitalization functions when it comes to cosmetology there ARE laws. You will need to go to each state and you will see the laws. They do exist.

BTW. Honey!!!!!!!! As a former cosmetologist. THERE is no stylist friend. Stylist will do any and everything to STEAL your clients. There is no friendship in the salon with your peers. Your clients is your paycheck. We do NOT play with our clients. PERIODT!!!!!!!

How many of these social media stylists are licensed cosmetologist? I believe a majority that have these insane practices are not licensed cosmetologist. All these unprofessional stylist are potentially not licensed cosmetologists. There are laws and standards in things you must do. Part of sanitation practices was shampooing hair.

As a person that is white, I don’t know anything about this topic, but what it looks like to me is that racism has run so deep that the cosmetology schools haven’t caught up to real life and apparently don’t want to. It is absolutely unacceptable and it should be changed in the law!

“Its less about detangling as it is getting conditioner on all of your strands.” I mean…Getting conditioner on all of your strands is mute if half of your strands are in a clump on your shower floor?!👀 I think ones detangling technique is paramount in retaining length.

I grew up in Nigeria where it was the norm for the aunties braiding your hair would yank it so hard that it would cause severe breakage. When I moved to the US I decided to take care of my hair by going natural but I also wanted to get braids. I was encouraged to go to the Nigerian aunties because they are cheaper but I did not want breakage on my new healthy hair lmao. Because of this I started looking into more AA stylists because I heard they were gentler with hair but the prices lord. It was so stressful because I was at a crossroad. Do I want unhealthy short hair or do I want to break the bank? Nowadays Nigerian or African stylists in general have increased their prices and a lot of AA stylists nowadays don’t care about the health of their clients hair requiring them to flatiron for basic styles like braids so now what is the difference lord.

I didn’t know it was rare to have hairstylists who do pretty much everything. Every salon my mom took me to pretty much did everything but take our braids, they’d charge extra for that 😂 I’d just take them out the night before and be good to go. It’s been that case for multiple salons I’ve been to

The biggest things that you get from formal education is an understanding of the chemistry of working with dyes, perms, etc; and hygiene. Not that someone couldn't learn these on their own, but it is something that is really a priority in cosmetology schools.

There's a reason that salons have junior and senior stylist rates. I keep seeing 20-25 year olds talking about "knowing their worth." Sure, it's true, but as a junior stylist, you shouldn't be charging senior stylist rates. You can't possibly have the years of experience and knowledge required when you've only been on this earth 25 years. Know your worth has turned into "I should be paid as much as someone with 25 years experience." I don’t necessarily agree. There's a level of entitlement that is quite shocking. It's like a college grad applying for their first job expecting to be paid $150,000. Sorry, no.

I'm white so naturally I don't know anything about black hair salons, but in the salon I go to it's kinda a default to wash hair if they plan on using any products in case someone put something in their hair that might become damaging if mixed with something else they put in to help cutting or styling it. I've helped friends undo their braids and they seem pretty tight, so if 2 products which don't mesh well are on someone's hair whilst braiding or straightening it, I imagine it would be really easy to cause some damage if something caused their hair to become weaker.
