We've never met, and while I know it's weird, I've come to think of you as friends over the years. I'm very excited for you, and really looking forward to watching you build what looks like it will be a spectacular exploration/cruising vessel! Im sure it feels a bit overwhelming right now, (I've been sailing all my life and working in the boat business for some of it, and I'd certainly be feeling overwhelmed!), but having watched you for years take an even, analytical approach to investigating and solving all sorts of problems on Delos, I can think of nobody whose ability to learn and implement new information and new skills I would have more confidence in than you guys. I'm also excited for Sierra. She's clearly a bright, loving, and cheerful child, and it's been great fun watching you two introduce her to the adventure in your own lives and the natural wonderland you all have the privilege of being immersed in, but I have to admit that in addition to admiring your ability to make her feel cared for, engage her in your travels, and show her how to be adaptable and appreciative, as the parent of a grown daughter, I've sometimes wondered a little bit about how much she might miss the socialization of going to school and living with a steady group of other children. It seems like your decision to take on this project couldn't come at a better time for her, and hopefully she'll gain a group of new friends, get introduced to life ashore and either learn to appreciate at much greater depth the life she's had up 'til now, or gain the tools to take a different path if she chooses to. It is so much fun to create something you love with the person you love! Enjoy

I would like to say go for a 65-75 foot boat. Just to incorporate a workshop and additional bunk space. Although it is small now, your family will grow (look for min 4 cabins and a kitchen). The longer length can make the pontoons wider and more space for bunking and wash-places and storage; while still getting some speed from the hulls. The hull looks very narrow in the video, get something 3-4 feet wider. Have to remember that 4 -6 inches will be insulation. (check out nauti-styles boat build in turkey, who have a great video on the inside construction and isolated bulkhead to prevent noise from cabins). The greater the underwater volume of your 2 hulls the better your (Center of gravity, and MG) which can make the boat more stable. For water tanks think at least 1.5m3 or 2 m3 tanks. For fuel tanks think double of Delos is now. Black water system (toilets) with a holding and treatment tank. Grey water tank (dishwasher, showers, sinks), with holding tanks. Black water and grey water tanks help in marine restricted places. Double your freezer space and fridge space. Compartmentalize your AC spaces. Best AC goes into the bedrooms (lowest temp), next your inside rooms (not as low as your bedrooms). You don't always have to run ac down to 20C, you can sleep at 22 to 24 AC, if the weather outside is over 30C. Whatever your design plan for 2-3 days at anchor for a battery bank, meaning you might need to put alot of batteries onboard for your electrical load. Put all the luxury items in too (freezers, fridges, ice makers and AC units, shop equipment or anything else). Look at the hulls being 1/3 height for tanks (water, waste tanks black, grey, fuel). The other 2/3 heights is for bedrooms etc. Look at 8Ft for bedroom height and 8.5-9 feet for the big cabin. If you can get higher head room in the interior. The biggest mistake most people make is cutting cost by limiting the expansion factor. If you want to add things in the future ;you must leave space and put in the electrical, when the boat is constructed. If you are finding the space cramped, make it bigger. That keel length looks very small, maybe go 15-20 feet keel. Also ask about a winged keel, which could give you more lift the faster you go in the water. Watertight compartments- As a rule you might look at no holes in the watertight bulkheads below the water line (or waterline +1 foot). For piping the piping can be welded. Cabling is harder to make watertight, you need to check into that. At least 4 -5 WT compartment per hull depending on the length of boat. For instance at the front of hull one bulkhead at 7-10 feet (storage locker), the second one at 14-20 feet (workshop or dive locker with dive compressor/backup diesel generator). Thicker aluminum at the front for reinforced bow for ice/logs etc. Biggest concern is that you need to sail a fwd helm and see how you like it (with minimum help), especially in inclement weather. Is there a area to dry off when you go out side and how do you tie on for safety in large waves/seas.

My favorite thing about sailing youtube is the videos oscillate from 90% sailing 10% DIY to 10% sailing and 90% diy every few years then back again, and we're finally at the stage in that cycle and I'm excited to see it documented from the delos family view.

What a fantastically designed vessel. As catamaran owners (Antares 44), we can appreciate the “upgrade” this vessel provides, from the forward cockpit and solid hulls to the running gear. AND you get to build exactly what you want. You’ll know the boat and systems inside and out. I really hope the size and scope of this project won’t overwhelm you. We simply wouldn’t have the patience or bandwidth to undertake something like this, despite the overwhelming sense of accomplishment once crossing the finish line. Good for you! I hate making long comments, so I'll keep it simple. My thoughts on the whole plan would be to JUST DO IT! I mean, I watched you all for years and went back and watched all the other videos from the past leaning along the way (my next step BTW would be to get on a boat and do it with IRL training) . I think it would be a great show, kind of like the old show "This old house" where we can watch you build and learn things along the way. We already saw so much sailing knowledge, maybe it would be a great change. You could also always go out and sail for a week or two if things get dry. Patrons could have a bigger list of things to watch and interact with as well. And really important, the family can get land life back in, including Sierra growing up and going to school etc... Good luck! I as a viewer am happy to be along this new journey. I know for one it's going to be a little different not watching the relaxing sails, but we all need to do new things and not be stuck in the past.

If you need further reinforcement of your decision to do an aluminum build in a warm place, go to a cold climate aluminum shop and look at the size of the gas main needed for the heating to keep the metal at an appropriate temperature for good welding practice!

An aluminum cat seems spectacular to me! I also admire the attitude towards the idea of ​​building it yourselves. The statistics on YT for these types of projects are sickeningly huge BTW, but more importantly, these guys are following their hearts towards a path that will definitely leave a deep footprint on the world's sailing community, and even more so in the invaluable legacy of additional experiences and beautiful life lessons for the Little Nugget and all the other “littles” who are virtual witnesses today and tomorrow. 👍💪👌

As a South African living on the Gold Coast and sailing and boating on Moreton Bay I was taken aback by hearing a South African accent and then a sail over to Moreton Island. Particularly as we'll be camping on Moreton Island in 2 weeks time. Be great to see the build progress if you do build here.

I've been watching you guys four about five years, about the time when yo😅daughter,was about to be born, I admire your adventure. Due to my health issues, I can't do my own water adventure. I just want to thank you guys for the adventure, even though I was not part of your life and adventure. I. I’m so excited for this next phase of the Delos story!

We looked at doing exactly this. And my husband is a welder fabricator with all the tools and know how. Still we were put off by the magnitude, cost and time required. So kudos for having the drive and enthusiasm to Start such a project. It takes a special kind.

My husband is a life long sailor and owned/operated Jax Charters, a private motor yacht charter company in Jacksonville, Fl., chartering his 43 Hatteras MY to/from Bahamas. Unfortunately he is now in poor health and can no longer operate a boat of either variety alone. He LOVES your videos, and now he is SO EXCITED TO BE PART OF THE BUILDING EXPERIENCE!! He said that it’s like he was part of the team. Thank you for sharing this experience with all of us.

Be aware from a voice of experience on such a project. You cannot see or imagine how slow things will go when you start getting into systems, wiring, interior details. You must be prepared for it to take much longer than you anticipate. I advise looking into hiring as much help as you can possibly afford to help with the stuff that goes so slow. It can get very frustrating when you spend weeks and weeks of hard labor but cannot really see much in the way of progress. It takes a high degree of patience and determination. Good luck with it as it sure looks like an exciting project! Try to get up off the floor when ever you can!

So Excited to watch this build!!! Wow, that is an awesome undertaking and the design just blows me away. I have been following MJ Sailing for a couple years and I just love watching their progress building their fiberglass "kit" Cat. I have to say, the idea of building an Aluminum Explorer Cat is way more appealing to me. When I first moved to Fairbanks, Alaska in 1992...there was a couple building an aluminum Cat in their backyard along the Chena River. Their plan (and they did it) was to launch it into the Chena River when complete and make their way to the Bearing Sea and then sail around the world. I have no idea where they are now...but back then it was the most amazing project I had seen anyone doing.

Very happy for you both! I look forward to the build series. The achilles heel of aluminium boats is obviously corrosion. I noticed that the first hull showed some serious consideration of the potential issues. One thing I noticed was that all of the deck cleats had been welded onto the hull. It would be great if you covered the strategies employed in the design to prevent, identify and repair corrosion.

I've built several small boats and there is truly nothing quite like launching and sailing/driving/paddling something you made with your own blood sweat and tears. This is fantastic news and OMG what a huge undertaking, super stoked for y'all. Following in the footsteps of Salt & Tar, RAN, Emerald Steel and so many more; given your documentary skills this is going to be epic.

Hello guys, so happy for you. You can do it! We had similar experience in the late 1970s but with choosing and building an airplane. The design was a totally new design and the construction was also new. We learned as we built and six years later we flew a totally new type of aircraft. If we could do it you can too. My build problem was burn out. We would build for a month or so and then do our water sports and camping. The stats on completing a large project from start to finish is not promising but you have to focus on the reward at the end. Before the plane I helped build a 60’ shrimp boat so I had learned to visualize the end. Stay focused and when your head starts getting fuzzy then take a break for a while. Have fun at it and don’t make it into a job. Keep Looking Up!

Being an old sailor who managed a whole year sailing our boat across the Atlantic, I'm so interested in your crazy project. Thank you so much for sharing it! 🎉

Can I suggest that you take a look at the precision involved in building a quality alloy boat on the “sailing into freedom” channel. Peter is an Australian Engineer who is building a similar vessel in Vietnam. The labour costs are much lower there than in Australia but a lot of them have been trained in the big Australian shipyards which build Aluminium Ferries that run between Tasmania and Victoria. Anyhow if look past Peter’s over the top larrikins style you will see just how high quality the work is coming out of this yard. All the shell panels are English wheel rolled to get perfect hull profiles. All the buttons welds are continuous (they use scrap material to continue welds 3 inches past the end of the panels to prevent future cracking) If you were to use a yard like this with your design it would be done in 3 months and you probably won’t spend any more.

I am SO excited for you!!!!! I started watching you about Episode 103, found myself changing my life with the view of the world you shared, decided to conclude my IT career of 29 years, and go on a world journey myself that has so far included some sailing. And now on Episode 452 I see you have that excitement once again of a huge life-changing event. And that you're going to a cat is both surprising and comforting as in my sailing experience I found myself assuming I was a monohull guy.....but after a 5 day ASA cat course out of San Diego totally see the appeal. And your twist to be intimately involved in the design and construction is yet again an example that you truly embrace the idea of living for new life experiences. I'm watching myself as part of the tribe!

The issue with aluminium boats is not the hull, you can get an aluminium shell pretty quickly and cheaply. The time is the fit out on the inside. You basically need to build a second boat inside the insulation.

I’ve watched 2 other favorite sailing channels buy new boats this year. One I still think is the dumbest super high dollar purchase of all time, the other made perfect sense because it fits their sailing lifestyle. I’m an old banker, so dollars have to fit into benefits for me. I love this idea of yours. You’ve selected a location for the build that gives you bang for your buck and you have all kinds of support around. I’m really looking forward to the build. If it were me, I think I’d pay for support labor to assist just to speed the process along and have the extra experience handy.

It's perfect! 👌 Just the right size. Metal / aluminium hull, built like a tank, loads of space for solar, and you get to literally learn the boat layout inside out by being intricately involved in the build.

2.0 woohoo! I'd love to see build content on the design process (ship design and interior) and how you go about finding, ordering, etc. everything from scratch since many of the sailing channels that have recently done a boat build have gone with a company that takes care of a lot of those details and they didn't go into much of the actual decision making process since there's sooooo much to plan and choose!

Definitely talk with Nahoa who are also building a Deviliers Aluminum Cat. I imagine both of you could learn a lot from each other about what design decisions you made and the reasons for them.

Just imaging sailing around the world on a boat you built just seams amazing.

As much as I love this channel and have been here from the beginning I don't think I can stand another boat build. I like sailing channels because I love sailing. I have been an engineer all my working life so sailing is my escape from the reality that I am now way too old to scrabble about on my knees. I now have to sail vicariously through these kind of channels due to chronic arthritis and other age related illnesses. Probably will never see the end of this build. Will watch whilst you still sail but who knows after that. May pop in now and then for an update. I wish you all the best and good luck with the build. ATB regards from the UK

I thin one of the big draws of this channel is already the boat work. Brian is an extraordinary resourceful dude and by extension this channel is already with at least one foot planted in the maker space on RU-vid. Maker channels are a much bigger space on RU-vid than sailing, and with Brian and Kazaa well proven storytelling skills I’m sure you’ll actually end up growing your viewership rather than decrease it. Adding to that, I’m sure this is the right move for your family, spend 4-5 years on land in a stable environment is something that’s obviously needed for your family. best of luck and looking forwards to following this journey for years to come!!

I love boat projects, this is a big one! Giving some overview of each phase may help people engage with the videos. It can be hard to visualize for people who aren't in engineering or fabrication. I've worked a lot with aluminum and love many of it's properties. 👏👏👏

Great decision guys: I’d say it ticks all the boxes for the kind of adventurous sailing you do! And living in Australia while you build it…priceless, you’re going to love it. (I emigrated from the US to Sydney many years ago and I love it here.) The build of our Schionning catamaran is just about to start, so we’re almost in the same boat pardon the pun. I’m really looking forward to watching the build and the decisions you have to make along the way. Total respect for taking on the build yourselves. If I was as young at you, I’d do the same!

Very exciting! A really like the design of the forward helm and controls. A big advantage is that the winches will be close to the mast which means significantly less forces at play on the various halyards and much easier handling.

Hopefully you’ll have professional help with ships systems: electrics, inc. navigation integration, inc. steering-autopilots, battery & solar, interior woodworking, all the fabric & finishing work, galley & head design & execution. And then the engine issue. Hybrid like HH is my recommendation. Huge amount of work. 2 full years realistically. Of endless & often soul breaking work. I won’t lie. I had done three circumnavigations when I was hospitalized with a major back surgery and, having been a computer scientist & geodetic engineer, I ran across you in Episode 3? From Mexico to the Marquesas and thought, what are these two yahoos doing. I was familiar with Amel and sailed Swans for my fist two round the worlds and then an Oyster 595. I’ve been a delivery skipper for Gunboat before they moved to France so I’m familiar with fast cats. Like the idea of an aluminum or carbon fast cruising cat. I’ve stayed true to my monohull love and have a Garcia Exploration 60 on order. Never quite took to the sailing by the numbers on cats. I’m 76 and have sailed 280,000 miles - most with my late wife & kids. Now being crewed by grandkids and upon delivery I’m heading through the Northwest Passage and along the Aleutians to Japan, and eventually heading to a few years in Chile, Argentina and the Antarctic. Best of luck. I get the feeling you want another child and raising kids and self schooling is sure a lot easier today. SSB days and the internet didn’t exist. You’ve got something’s easy but hardworking boatbuilding hasn’t changed that much. It’s a terrible strain on the family. God bless and love to all.

I've been following your sailing journey for a very long time now... many years it seems! I've always enjoyed the content, and will continue to do so. During that time, I've also been following "Acorn to Arabella", watching Steve build his wooden sail boat. Now, Steve and his partner are sailing on the boat that he built, the very boat I've watched being built from the lead keel pour to mast creation. Now, its so ironic that the people I've been admiring, sail around the world that entire time, are now embarking on their own boat build. I can't wait to begin watching the new content! Congrats on the new project!

You guys inspired me to go sailing and to go live aboard a sailboat. I really admire your attitude towards being independent and do as much as possible yourselves. To build your own boat yourselves is in my opinion the ultimate thing to do to live an independent lifestyle. I just bought my first sailboat last year (an Albin Vega) to learn how to sail. Now we are selling our house and we are looking for a much bigger boat to be able to live on and experience similar adventures as many did before us. I will follow you with much interest on your new journey and hope to learn a few things. Love you guys. Safe journeys and build the best boat ever built 🙏🏻
