This page has been developed with the intention to assist the learning requirements for graduates and undergraduates currently studying animation, vfx, games production etc within a creative environment. Please feel free to email or comment on any videos for requests. I will do my best to update the page as frequently as possible.
My name is Chris McQuillan I've been fortunate enough to have worked within the creative industry for around 12 years and in that time Ive covered a lot of projects that span games, TVC's, idents, music videos, promo's tv bumper ads among other things associated to the creative industry - I continue to do so alongside my teaching.
Your videos are great and informative. It's a shame you never did the robot fall animation part that you mentioned. How would one go about it? Does one animate and then render everything inside Maya (the animation + the video background) or do the animation part in Maya then import that back to After Effects (kinda like png files)? As you can probably tell I'm a bit new to this technique.
It's useful as a quick solution to get camera data and animation data between both maya and AE. There are other methods now. I'm planning on overhauling alot of content soonish.
@@the3rdplace I think you still need to export a track from a camera tracker, so the only benefit here is that you don't need to export plates for a Maya backplate? But you've already done that if you use a different camera tracker. Seems like that saves about 40 seconds. You still have to render from Maya, so you're going to import frames in the end anyway. ??? I think they added this feature because they could finally link viewports to live sessions, not because it was useful.
See above comment. It's useful as a quick solution to get camera null, and lighting info from AE to maya and back again. Generally speaking I tend to use other tracking tools to integrate live action and cg. I'd recommend you explore those and find your own journey as you seem to know it all.
I never understand when somebody dislike a tutorial than why don't add a comment what was the problem with that.... its more like a childish Troll behave.
I tend to only reply to positive or useful comments. Dont mind helping where i can. Some people have nothing better to do. Tragically. Happy new year :)
Hi. I have just subscribed to your channel. Could you point me to the video where you taught how to setup the After Effects LIve link in Maya and likewise in After Effects. Thanks and looking forward to your reply.
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4oOfc0S11Ic.html hopefully this is the link your requesting. I do go ove the mac setup... windows will be similar. Any problems let me know. Cheers Chris
@@the3rdplace The channel box of the joint is not been modified at all by animations, this is because is constrained to a locator and the locator has all the animations but this (the locator) does not affect joins, I need specify joins transformations being modified so the can be baked and work in a game enviroment. do you know how to do it?? maybe some option in the bake section?
@@jagotato try selecting root of skeleton. Goto select -> heirarchy -> bake keys. If that fails. Id need to see it really to be able to identify the issue. Hope that helps Chris
sure what's the error message? maybe attach a screen capture? or copy and paste any errors from the script editor? could be useful to determine issues. cheers Chris
@@giftedmortals1809 okay... so my guess is that you haven't baked out the keyframes of the skeleton... so if you could select the root of the skeleton (top node) and go to edit -> keys -> bake simulation then you'll be given options change it from selected to below and make sure all keyable is on... I'm guessing its just not baked the animation. and your trying to export a rig with various constraints... fix won't support constraints.
To fix the weird plane angles you have to edit their 3D rotation in After effects before you put it into maya... After effects if pretty good with keeping the tracking consistent but it doesn't guess the actual orientation of geometry in your footage very well, so you have to mess around with it
Solids should effectively go back and forth between maya and afx as a plane equally proportioned to the scale/size of the plane.. happy to take a gander. Thanks chris
I have successfully synced AE with Maya and now I'm struggling with the rotation/coordinates thing. But it looks promising. Is there a solid way to change the angles before connecting, or should I just mess and try random values? if the planes are not perfectly perpendicular to the original Maya XYZ, I will suffer importing objects from my target Maya animated objects...
It took me three times but I finally got it to work. my grid wasn't staying as still as yours was. I went back and selected more Null groups in AE then re-scripted into maya. It was more stable but still not perfect. Good enough for government work!
Hopefully it helped :) there are nice ways to get camera data out of after effects to maya by using maya dynamic link I've a tutorial on that and it gives way more flexibility to go back and forth between both pieces of software. Many thanks chris :)
What would you recommend to get the geometry back into after effects? I tracked a scene and used the camera link from AE to make sure my models matched in maya so its tracked nicely. Should I batch render the scene and composite it back into AE?
Hello! Thanks for doing these videos, quick problem solve question. Maya produces a "fatal error" on me and crashes despite getting the good handshake initially as well as the green tick mark when dragging the camera and a solid from AE. Have you experienced anything like this yet? I'm using both 2018 AE and Maya, thought that would eliminate some glitches. Thanks again for the work you're doing and for any feedback you might have! Slainte!
which versions of maya and after effects are you using? im using maya 2019 and after effects cc 2018. (randomly it could be maya 2018 causing the issue)... if that's the case there may be a service pack for 2018 available to fix any issues? worth a try. Try those.. hopefully will help. if not get back in touch and maybe send the files over and i can take a closer look. cheers Chris
