I'm a 40 year old family man living in Far north Queensland. The channel is about my journey to gain a Chippy (Carpentry) Apprenticeship and the years it takes to complete in Australia. First time RU-vidr so will constantly be learning and growing is this area too. Just going to have crack at sharing my experiences in an effort to help others make the decision to take up tools an get away from the desk.
Might even make some mates on the way. Build on legends.
I love your videos, thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and experience. I’ve been in the police for over 8 years, 7 years in NZ & 1 year remote in the NT. Applying for a carpentry trade has been on my heart for a long time now so just trying to pray and plan on what I should do next as I’ve got a very young family and will be quite a change. Thanks again for sharing your journey.
I'm 33 and I generally despise working with an apprentice my age or similar. Probably sounds bad but tough shit that you have an old injury playing rugby or whatever, if I'm older than you and outworking you, if you can't do it then why would you expect to get paid 2x as much as some green 18yr old that can do it?? Fuck em right their
Fair comment mate. Can see where you are coming from. Have you had a few issues in this area? Do you reckon something like a health check for older folks to check all their bits work good before starting a trade is an idea? In saying that young ones can have issues too I guess.
Reckon next one mate. Think I have covered this in the past but will revisit, never hurts to freshen things up. Did you want me to work from a tool budget or something for you?
So I'm a 27-year-old nurse in New Zealand, don't really wanna do nursing anymore. Would I be okay trying to get an apprenticeship if I literally know nothing about carpentry? Do they teach you from scratch I mean?
Hi Mate, being honest is key, I think. Let all involved know you know nothing. Getting taught from scratch is the idea, regardless of age. Keep us all posted.
Thanks bro. I am a kiwi builder, early 50's looking to change thing's up for comfort more then anything. Dont want to waste money so on a research mission.
4th year! Wow! Keep it up! I'm continuing on my journey. Got some practical classes for my Cert 2 Electrotechnology course this week! Then will be one step closer to getting that apprenticeship!
I was in sales before I started. So yer big cut in the pay packet. As for pay for you mate, I'm not sure hey. It will vary depending on employer. At a guess thinking it would be around that 25 to 28 an hour. Biggest thing is to really look at your spending in detail and work out a budget. You know where you stand then.
Thanks for a great vid! It sounds like an exciting journey with both ups and downs. Im looking to go into a apprenticeship myself, but i am scared since i have no experience what so ever with carpentery. However i have a dream of becoming a great carpenter so i just have to go for it 100% and work my ass off.
That tape holster needs to go on the back or something just watching is annoying me positioned there. Suspenders look good I don’t see the hype with this product though.
I didn't no. In saying that though I did stuff back at school (a little while back). And mucked around with Reno's on a home I own in the past. Is that what you wanted to know?
@@midlifecarpentry Yeah thanks mate. I worked as a trade assistant for 2 years before joining the military, but I'm finding the military isn't giving me the experience I wanted, so I'm looking at getting an apprenticeship but I'm a little worried I'll have trouble as I haven't done a pre trade. Thanks for your feedback.
Such a shame to hear that mate. Not many options where you are? I'm extremely thankful for the guys I have worked around over the past few years. Kicked me up the bum and taught me when needed.
Funny, this video popped up in my feed after I started considering an apprenticeship at the age of 50! And I never even searched for a single video on the subject.:)
I found your channel when you first began and I identified with you! At the time I was living in Mexico, working as a teacher. But that was not what I really wanted. I have always wanted to get into a trade, but in Mexico trades pay very poorly and there is no room for advancement. Fast forward to today, I'm 42 going on 43, my family and I have moved to Sydney, I have retired from teaching, and I am now studying my Cert II Electrotechnology pre-apprenticeship course. I hope to get a electrical apprenticeship this year. Thanks for your videos! Keep it up!
Thanks so much for posting this! I’m a 38 year old artist and I’m in the process of joining the carpenters union. I’ve had my interview and skills assessment and I’m eager to start working!
when will makita ever upgrade their system, I'm jealous of all the festool boys, but that stuff is way too expensive for me and I'd like to collect the same brand of tools and not have a bunch of different brands 😅
FU bar. I like that. Honestly though gets used alot for demo works. And the chalk line is very much a staple for me these days. I did another in my tool built vid now I'm 3rd year. A few things changed. :)
Hey man, thanks for the content. I am currently looking to do a mature age apprenticeship being 32 years old and this is definitely insight I want to see and know. I realise this was done 2 years ago but keen to watch your journey.
I hit Jayden up about the leather. Looks pretty good still. But he mainly uses a hook on the back. No issues so far mate. Obvious Tool co belts are getting popular.
I’m on the XGT platform . Electrician by trade . Have found every tool to be much smoother and less effort than the 18v . And I’m certainly not going through the batteries as much . I would be keen for you to do a review of the new high output 4AH battery if that’s possible ? As for the use of the big garden blower I get about 20mins runtime with a 5ah battery . Also had issue with the rotary hammer trigger …. No chuck issues yet . Ray
Appreciate and admire you talking about this online. I’m 28 and worked in marketing for 7 years, recently decided to leave and become an electrician. I’ll be starting an apprenticeship very soon. Super excited to take my life learnings and throw everything and being the best possible tradesman I can be. Any additional pearls of wisdom anyone can leave for us is really appreciated. I’m well aware the journey can be tough as an apprentice with how you might get treated but totally prepared for all the nonsense. Ready to prosper!
@@Travisty01 I’m glad you’ve decided to take the leap. It’s never too late! You can start a pre-apprenticeship course to get your foot in the door and learn basics. A Cert II in Electrotechnology is a preference of most apprenticeship employers. However not all employers deem it a requirement, you can start applying for a first year apprenticeship now if you really want to. Just expect the apprenticeship salary to be fairly low, pay won’t see a significant rise until you’re fully licensed after the 4 year apprenticeship.
Awesome to hear it guys. Take every day as it comes. Enjoy the bits you can and really treasure it. It will help keep that passion alive. And the biggest thing is to Stretch. 😁
Normally pay is consistent as an adult apprentice regardless of your year according to minimum wage in Australia. At the end of the day, it is up to the Employer to set that rate.
@@midlifecarpentry thanks for taking a moment to reply! Appreciate your advice, I hear plenty of older pro tradesmen say to stretch, exercise and look after your body as much as possible and don’t let any fool ever convince you that it’s ‘not cool’ or ‘weak’ to be cautious about your health. Even if it’s little things like wearing ear muffs or certain basic protective gear.
