I double extract all of my tinctures whether it’s an herb or fungi to get down to the % of alcohol I prefer I vacuum distill to remove the alcohol. For people that may read this and don’t know distilling under a vacuum drastically lowers the temperature needed to remove the alcohol.

Thanks for this video. You started with 580 g of fresh mushrooms. If I start with 200 g of dried lions mane, what ratio do I use to determine milliliters of water? Ex. 1:2 ratio of 200g is 200g X 2 = 400 ml of water?

I have read in a few places that alcohol extraction will deteriorate the potency of the Beta-glucans, whereas hot water extraction won't. On the other hand the single water extraction step will not make the erpenes and phenolic compounds bio available. What is your opinion on this ?

Very nice video. I hate to be picky, but I think you were supposed to add 875 ml of pure water to the 750 of decoction. You want to more than half the alcohol %. The volume of diluent should be more than the original decoction/menstruum/effluent. That is why your final hydrometer reading is at 35%, not 30%. Sorry, I used to be a Chemistry teacher. :)

I just purchased this today...do you go by the external temperature instead of the internal temperature instead? Like is the external temperature a more reliable reflection of the sample's temperature?

Great explanation. However I find 15% alc to be the best for tinctures. I make a normal dual extract using 500g of dried fruit, 1l Ethanol and 1l water. Soxhlet extract with each for 8 hours and then I distill off all the ethanol and weigh the total decoction and add 15% total volume ethanol. Leaving a pretty good extraction with 15% alcohol content. This can be replaced by vegetable glycerine if you do not like alcohol

What exactly are we extracting with the alcohol?' 3. What is the equision then for double extraction Using fresh lion´s mane I understand it is essential to use 95% alcohol or else it will be like trying to extract the components in beer. Btw, what are those chemical we are juicing out? Is it possible to use dried lion´s mane (does it still have all the goodness?) and extract it in vodka (is it strong enough to extract those chemicals?)? Let´s say it is possible. How do I get to a double extraction? Using the same equision? I assume, the % will go down to 35 already during the 2 weeks. How do I have space then to introduce water extract into my tincture? You're right it isn't magic.... But it's definitely not the way a chemist would do it. Without complicating things too much.... first instead of using a press, you should use vacuum filtration. After good filtration you should put everything through a rotovap to get rid of your solvents (alcohol and water) only after you get rid of your solvents, you will know how much you have actually extracted (otherwise you're just guessing) and then you can dissolve your extract into the appropriate dilutant at the appropriate percentages. If you're not doing this and you are giving it to actual medical patients you are negligent and quite possibly doing more harm than good. Now that you, know please do better!

For an o/w emulsion and for w/o, how long do you have to mix the IKA ULTRA TURRAX 25T basic? I just bought one on Ebay and I don't know how long it takes to get the smallest particles possible, for a stable emulsion. I know that stability depends on several factors, but now I am referring to the mixing time. Thank you!

I highly recommend the filter press by Magic Butter, works great for all tinctures I've pressed so far even fine ground mark.

I normally tincture with 40% alcohol and occasionally 60% everclear. Since these alcohols already contains a ton of water, is there a way to just heat the alcohol extract prior to pressing, to extract the water soluble compounds? Are those compounds being partially extracted by the cold water during the 2 week alcohol soak, or is heat the only way to begin that process? Thanks for the great video!

Great video, but the alcohol reading will be out, the alcohol hydrometer is only good for pure distilled spirits, having other components in the liquid will give a incorrect reading, secondly when you take a reading you need to take a temperature reading of the liquid and adjust according to the temperature

QUESTION; Why did you add the alcohol to the 2nd blender of Lions Mane? Instead, blend the Lions Mane, strain all the water out of the blended Lions Mane. Get rid of the water. Then weigh the Lions Mane again, this starts you out correctly measuring the mushroom weight, then add times 2 alcohol milliliters. ??? Shake for 2 weeks, there's your first extract. Correct???

I foraged some Lions Mane last year, chopped it and put it in a pint of grain alcohol. It has been sitting in the alcohol since November of 2022. I did it rough and just filled the jar without weighing or measuring. How should I proceed to figure out the correct volumes for decoction and mixing? THANKS!
