Fishing is my life! From subzero temps to the high mountain summer cool air, you will see me all over the great grand state of Utah. I love catching all fish but Trout and Char are my specialty. I love to fly fish but Tenkara fixed line fishing is perhaps my favorite above all. If you find me in the wild, be sure to say hi!

Today is the first time I heard about tenkara fishing. Never heard of anyone fishing tenkara in Sweden. Wondering what line to have? Thanks for the interesting video.
Great question. We call this line “level line”. It’s the same diameter and doesn’t taper so it’s meant to be your casting backbone. You can usually buy 30-50 meter spools and cut it to length and it’s typically a high visual color like neon orange or yellow. The particular level line in this video is sold by Wasatch Tenkara and they call it chameleon level line because it’s basically camouflage. Though I prefer the bright colors and fish don’t seem to know the difference.
Thanks for the video. I agree. It is a very beautiful canyon. I love going up there. it can be a tough creek to fish but I learned from this video some things I need to do to hopefully have better luck fishing it.
Beautiful fishing man - I appreciate you so thoroughly talking about the area you're fishing. As someone who fishes a lot of urban-adjacent joints nowadays, it's extra fun to find fish where people are fishing and hiking.
Nice to see an angler using the Bow-and-Arrow cast so effectively; is a highly underrated casting technique that does not require fish spooking rod motion. Great video, thank you for sharing…Karl.
Big pike are fun on Tenkara too, but you gotta be careful. Once just exploded my Hellbender rod because he hit the perfect angle after eating my streamer and I set the hook too hard. Broke 5 sections of the rod!
I bet that startled the crap out of ya lol! Yea that first one was at least 20” and I think straight braid would have landed it but I would have had to two hand the rod too based on how that felt.
@@skiddyfishing It was definitely surprising - is the most recent upload on my channel. Sounded like a dang gun shot. I'm trying to catch pike in the 30-40 inch range, but I don't think I will attempt with the Hellbender again lol - gotta use my Rodzilla
I saved the best fish for last in this video! The Ukiyo is one of my favorite rods and the grip style likely delivers better uptime in sensitivity. Tenkara USA really did a great job on this one.
@@skiddyfishing me too! Even though I have only been doing this for 3 months. Love your content! Going out tenkara/keiryu tomorrow. Probably will only get panfish and carp at best. I hope lol
@@skiddyfishing thank you! So far I have a lot of redbreast and bluegill. A nice rock bass and lost a rainbow trout. If I get anything good I will be sure to share.
Awesome video! Thanks for letting me borrow this rod to catch that awesome 14" Cutty on our last trip. It casted great and handled that 14" Cutty without much issue. It would be an adventure to go much bigger than that though. Thanks for sharing how much fishing has helped you in your life! I know that fishing and getting out into nature really heals the soul! It is one of my heavens on earth too. My wife chalks up all my fishing purchase to "Therapy"! It is very true and way less expensive than traditional therapy with a doctor! 🤣
I just finished editing that video actually and I captured that moment very well from a 3rd person standpoint. The fact your wife can justify a purchase a long side with you means you really found the keeper! I am equally blessed to have such a great advocate in my life and that helps tremendously. I was hell bent on making sure you caught a fish on that rod and that fish was totally justice! You are right though, a 15+" inch fish would make me sweat a little but I would love to get one on the rod and hang on for the ride lol.
Thank you CBL! Means a lot! I actually don’t tie my own. I find it to be an entirely different hobby and it’s hard to find time for it but I actually love fishing flies tied by my friends who send them in periodically because it’s kind of that happy medium between store bought and self tied.
@@skiddyfishingI’m a disabled vet that deal with challenges and definitely support people and organizations that help people in various ways. I tie flys as my “Therapy” and want to send you a few. What’s the best way to get them to you? Take care of yourself and Tight Lines. Chris
@@CBL138 Well first and foremost, I must thank you for your service to our country! That is very appreciated. That is a very kind offer of you. If you would like to set something up, you can reach out to me via email at skiddyfishing@gmail.com or message me on Instagram under the same Alias, Skiddy Fishing. No pressure on your end and thank you for thinking of me. Enjoy your therapy friend and tight lines as well!
Great video, Payton. Nice CR cutty, too! You gotta stop recommending all these cool rods, I don’t have the budget for them. I think I would put this at the top of my list, though, given the background/purpose behind the rod. Really like the look of the integrated line holder versus other ones I’ve seen. Tenkara has been the same for me: therapy when I need it.
Great insight Mark and to be honest even I am having a hard time keeping up with my own rods 😂 I may sell some to thin out the arsenal and have more uptime on the ones I enjoy more. I think most of my rods in videos are good but Seiyu is in the category of great. You really wouldn’t regret it! Tony is a stud too.
There seems to be a resolution issue with this video I couldn’t work around. I apologize and have a great follow up video with this rod in the works! Be sure to set it to 1080p! 😊
I was out on my first tenkara fishing outing last night on a very small spate river running through a forest and into the sea in Northern Ireland. There was lots of structure like on your river, and it was where most of the fish were too. Had some lovely wild brown trout, one on a dry which I allowed to float down the river and under a semi submerged tree out from the bank. I could never cast into that spot, but letting the river do the work of getting the fly into the nook got me a nice little fat brownie.
I hope you enjoy this B roll footage from my June visit to the Raft Rivers. I sent coordinates and an image to a dwr biologist and sadly they say it’s to much hybrid to count for the slam. I only need a Yellowstone to complete my next slam!
Never would have thought you can bank fish for pike on Tenkara. Looks like the lake goes from shallow to deep quickly. What depth do you think you were casting toward? Were you using your usual rod length of line?
Yea I was fishing the rod length. I think it’s 12’ deep but I can’t be certain. I actually learned to wade there from a previous attempt when I was on the actual bank dry, I would spook them and most were hanging in inches of water so I made a game plan to wade deeper than them and cast up towards them. It may be a different situation anywhere else.
I was just thinking. I have the Kaida also. The way I know a bead head is too heavy is that I can’t aim well and I have to just side arm lob. Toward the end you mentioned missing hook sets because it was too heavy. I wasn’t completely sure what you meant
@markschade9436 slow action rods usually have a delayed hook set. A faster action rod with a nymph that heavy would’ve been a little better. I had just fished the same creek a week prior with a WTR rod with insane success. The Kaida was new to me and I knew it was the wrong rod for weighted flies but I was too eager to use it. 🤣
@markschade9436 here is a more proper Kaida video: DRAGONtail KAIDA Takes On BIG Creek Browns! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t5Fu3VqbTN0.html
@@skiddyfishing new to fly fishing but i have some experience with bass and ultralight. Rod flex/acton is a similar concept that I never completely understood. I had never thought that weight of my jig fly etc would affect the hookset!
I don’t own waders have to agree these seem like they would be more versatile and comfortable in many situations. I imagine if I plan to wade waist deep water, I will need bib waders. But would you say-if I can expect to be in water that is knee or low thigh deep. Water say mid 50’s air mid 50’s and I am appropriately dressed up top that I would be comfortable?
Each anglers needs are different. I went with a light sunshirt with a tank top under and I was breathing well. However the same creek in the winter has the same flows so if anything I just add the jacket and hoodie. If you drink a lot of water these are nice too!
Due to no fault of my own I'm headed to the La Sals for the week. I'm taking my rods optimistically, I'd love to get the Ragnarok bent, but on a scale of boned to rekt how screwed is that plan? I talked to my forest service buddy and his response was 😬...
I am glad you asked! There is a bit of missing context in the dialogue. Up until that first cutty, I was using a marabou streamer and the brookies were slamming it but they struggled to take it enough to stay hooked. Then we hit that run with maybe 20+ casts with no bumps. Kyle gave me a warbird and the first cast I caught that Colorado River Cutty. I caught a fish in 6 consecutive casts with that warbird so I joked to Kyle that if Brent was watching, I had to make an order. I believe all cuttys in that river and it's tributaries were all CRCT. My video from Monday was filmed just hours before this with my first fish of the Wyoming Slam caught on the boarder too.
That is a well put together video! It was a little bit of a grind for that first one, but it was well worth it for those two amazing Cutties! I can't wait to see the Utah video. That was even more epic! 🔥🔥🔥 I'm glad you gave me a hand on that crossing. That was a scary one (and it wasn't even the worst).
Utah one should be up now! I hope I did it justice. I wasn’t sure about the little montage at the start but I wanted to share an idea of how much river we waded before getting the first cutty. It was most adventurous during those crossings lol. Glad we both came out unscathed from it. 😂
Thanks Payton. I bought my single solitary one-and-only Tenkara about 3 years ago. And only now, finally, searched Shadowfire 365 reviews and videos. Agreed!. It is a fine rod that is a joy to cast, and I truly enjoy the full curve when a fish is on. Gotta sympatize with you. 12' rod made that tiny overgrown creek "entertaining" to fish. Highly enjoyed your video bob
Tell your “friend” that you as a viewer see things in hindsight. I was there in the moment and the moment sometimes happens very fast. The fish simply popped off the hook and swam away. There was nothing to include beyond that point. Nothing shady with the clip ending. If I turn the camera and showed you the water, you would’ve just seen water. The bigger issue you’re not addressing is the fact that I’m wearing gloves. That is absolutely a problem, shameful, and probably way worse than yanking a 4” trout that I thought was closer to an 8” one. More fish were affected by those gloves than that one fish your “friend” hand picked out. Surprised I owned up to that? Here in 2024 I don’t fish with gloves anymore and it’s more important to me to address that issue instead the one your “friend” picked out. I’m conscious that is a problem and I choose to keep my videos up because that’s what you get with Skiddy Fishing. You get a real humbled angler that’s developing right before your eyes. I have learned a thing or two since this video and I’m way more conscious on my fish etiquette. However, you have my promise that I will keep making mistakes because that’s just simply life. Any angler that would claim to be flawless in every scenario is lying to themselves. Can we be better? Absolutely friend.
Kaida is my first rod. Maybe I am trying lines that are too long-but I haven’t found casting to be as easy with the shorter length-rod feels a little “stiffer” to me at that length too-even though (pretty sure) the penny rating is almost the same at both lengths-curious if you guys have thoughts I really have had fun with this rod
@@skiddyfishing a number of different people suggested length of the rod level line. Then I do 4 feet of tipper and fish it down to 2 ft or so. I have fished almost everything small streamers and bead heads. Kebari and wet flies Kebari cast the best. I feel like I need the casting distance much of the time. But I know you have said you only go length of rod for level and tippet
@markschade9436 i find it to be a weightless rod so yea dry flies or kebari are going to be much better than beaded nymphs. I know many people usually do the “rod length, then a few feet of tippet”. I actually prefer not to have my fly exceed the length of the rod. If anything shorter so that 9’ zoom could have 8.5’ of line/tippet. Try going shorter.
@@skiddyfishing I am curious--what types of rods would you say do better with weight? Do rods that throw heavier flies tend to be stiffer and maybe less sensitive with small fish?
Sensitivity isn’t an issue with stiffer rods. If anything they’re enhanced, because softer rods take more action to hookset so the energy is slower. I would checkout Wasatch Tenkara Rods or Rocky MTN Tenkara for good fast action (stiffer) rods.
Beautiful little rod. I have a few perfect creeks for that rod. The rod sock is embarrassing....or at least to TT it should be. Seriously, how much would a decent sock add to the cost....$1.00?
This video made want a Kaida of my own, but they're sold out! 😭 I'll have to steal yours one of these days. 😉 What are you other top 5 rods and top 3 Dragontail rods?
You can borrow any of my rods anytime we hang out! I know I answered this on Facebook already but I will answer for the viewers who may be interested. I premise my response that I enjoy 90% of my tenkara rods and I get really good experiences with all of them so anything not in the top 5 doesn't mean I dislike the rod. My top 5 in no particular order: 1. DT Ragnarok 2. DT Kaida 3. T-USA Ukiyo 4. DT Mizuchi 5. WTR Baby Rodzilla Bonus: I think I am really gonna enjoy the TRC Kita a lot. DRAGONtail top 3: 1. Ragnarok 2. Kaida 3. Mizuchi consolation mentions: Those three rods cover all of my needs. Mizuchi is such a great close quarters fast action rod but has the blanks to change out for softer actions. Kaida is virtually a weightless fly only rod, and Ragnarok is perfect for what we just did in Wyoming the other week. However, the Talon Mini comes on more adventures than any other rod. Especially when I am western fly fishing because it fits in every single pack I own. I also expect the new Korean rod to take the reign away from one of these three....
It would. There are some forums that converted the test strength of level line to standard flouro line. I want to say it’s 15-20lb test but I can’t say for sure!
Great video. I picked up one of these Wild water combos last summer. Like many I didn't want to spend big bucks to see if I liked it. Getting everything but the net in a combo makes this a no-brainer. Didn't even have to load the line. The flies are really good too. This catches fish. Have caught trout, bass, and blue gills with it. While you could easily try to build your own and spend $300 getting a combo for just over $100 is a great way to start. Then if you upgrade you have a cheap spare rod.
Thank you for sharing your experience! I couldn’t agree more. Although I have spent hundreds more on additional fly rods since, this always comes on just about every adventure as a back up rod. And certainly not the back up rod that you would dread using! 😀
If done correctly the knot should just slip out if pulled apart. However I rarely pull it apart regardless and store the line on the Nirvana pucks. Theoretically even with your issue, as long as it’s tightening and loosening on the lilian with only your effort, there isn’t much to worry about even with that issue.
The closer to your fly higher of a chance of snagging the fish. The lower, the more you can snag structure. Start with 7”. I just wing everything with tenkara. I picked a length because it “looked” ok to me. I hope that helps you try your for your next outing!
New to Tenkara and fly fishing-never fished a hopper dropper. Questions: are you now and arrow casting to keep both flies from tangling? Or is it for accuracy?(rod looks extra fast tip-maybe doesn’t cast as easily or different from your other rods?)
I think you may be right. My only issue was I wasn’t prepared to keep fish. I didn’t want to hang onto that all day where it was caught so early. I suppose I donated it to the fishery that would harvest it for food. Next time I go ill bring a cooler.
