Hey there I'm Gerard, an Irish man who loves all things cloud, network and cybersecurity!
I've been working in IT for around 20 years, which goes all the way back to when I was building computers and selling them to neighbours at Christmas... to now, where I work in Cybersecurity for large global consultancy leading an amazing team.
You're in the right place if you want to get hands on, learn new skills and build labs!
Thank you so much for all of the time, energy and passion you have dedicated to this lab series! I am looking to start this lab myself but I don't have a physical server so could I build everything using Proxmox's virtual environment or VirtualBox? If so, which virtualization environment would you recommend? @gerardobrien
Hi, I want to start my Cloud Computing Journey, I only have experience in Computer Science/IT during AS-Levels, but now I am in year 13 and now don't remember much - would you recommend me to start with Cisco CCNA to start my Cloud Journey?
Hey mate, if cloud is your jam then take a look aloud.guru.. so many courses on there you could do! Grab the monthly subscription for a few months and smash out as many courses as you can! Start on the beginner and foundation courses then move on! You'll learn so much! Best of luck mate 💪
I am having some issues. I followed step by step the ubuntu install. Created the username and password. But then once it reboots after installing, i cannot login. Just says "Login incorrect". I have recreated the VM 5 times now. Trying super simple passwords. I know its not the keyboard layout as I can type the password in the login prompt and see it types correctly. Tried searching around but could not find any answers.
Hey mate! These are all in community hosted repositories and can also be uploaded by users. I just added a caution message to the description video to let people know to be careful when downloading... theres also more info on each package page. :)
8:32 As far as online communities goes, I know you was speaking in general but I like to mention that I find Quora to be a great social media community site🔖! It has that peer review or SME flare to it that I think it's worth checking out as it pertains to specific questions (down the line)⭐; arguably better than that old Google+ back in the day. I've noticed that Facebook (Meta) groups not listed. Don't worry, I don't have them listed either.😜 However, historically it'd be worth considering on people's list if not already, but I don't know since I haven't been on regularly for years.
7:35 Everything's on point but I'd be careful with [our current iteration of] A.I. Not only it still have kinks or a few bugs to work out but it's still in its infancy despite its original version been out for a while. There have been a number of cases where I & countless others had to correct it; and others where it agreed with the user despite the possibility of the user being wrong still. They are still dummy tech aka "artificial" intelligence. And yes in this case, the numbers can or do, lie🤥 -like Usopp, hence the long nose...ahem- .
Hello sir, I have an issue when I am creating a node for example the kali Linux node to the eve-ng the screen is not showing up, i followed the exact steps that you did, I also increased the ram and cpu I didn’t help ?
Hery mate, sounds like you need to install all the relevant client pack for your OS.. you can find them at the bottom of this page www.eve-ng.net/index.php/download/
Cybersecurity for Beginners - a curriculum! Hope this helps all those beginners out there... and also all those people with years of experience.... that forget some of the basics! 😆
This lab is made up of many different vm's. you can build them one by one, depending on what you need. I think some people have built what they need using vmware workstation though :)
I had trouble with the wazuh web interface. It would often report "Wazuh dashboard service is not ready yet". With the help of ChatGPT it was eventually resolved by editing the wazuh-indexer.service, `sudo systemctl edit wazuh-indexer.service`. Then adding the 2 lines ``` [Service] TimeoutStartSec=300 ``` Then reload systemd: `sudo systemctl daemon reload` and restart the indexer: `sudo systemctl restart wazuh-indexer` Hope this helps others. 🤷
You can install agents on linux, mac, windows.. also theres a number of adversaries that you can use to simulate traversal. Have a look here:caldera.readthedocs.io/en/latest/Lateral-Movement-Guide.html
Hi Gerald, great work on creating great content! I am a reasonable noob to cyber, and I'm trying to follow along, trying to expand my project portfolio and hands-on experience. However, I'm trying to do it on the VMware workstation. Got as far as installing the Ubuntu live server, however unable to config the vlan on the server. Any advice?
Hey mate, welcome! Glad to hear your following the series :) You add the VLAN when your at the network config part of the build.. when you initially start the vm it goes through a wizard. If have went past that part, you can manually modify the network config and add the vlan. However, if your new to all this.. you'll probably save yourself some time by scrapping the VM you built and creating a new one. Hope that helps.. let me know if it works for you! Cheers
@@gerardobrien Hi mate. Thanks for the reply. I did some research and it seems that vmware workstation does not support vlan tagging or segmentation. So I think I will have to put the whole lab into just one network. I know that can be risky but my thinking is that as long as the entire network is isolated, that should be fine. Anyway, I wanted to update you on the current standing. Cheers
Okay Im running into an issue when creating the 2nd network in Portainer. It says "Failure, Invalid pool request: Pool overlaps with other one on this address space.
I read that there were possibly some containers running using the network so rebooted the ubuntu server and I was able to add the vlan30 network... continuing on. 👍
great job you thank you.. but please for new bie the server web interface can't be reach what can be the issue have try searching the forum for solution can't find
@@gerardobrien Thank you so much for your reply and hard work, I did put the port not working, I want to ask I bought a mini pc to use for the Proxmox do I need to get ethernet cable for it because I was setting it up with the wifi adapter that came with the mini pc ..I can ping the gateway but not the server and can't access the server web interface also .. and have tried to change the ip many times ..any help should I just buy the ethernet cable?
@@babybossshark6625 just make sure the Proxmox server is connected to the wifi, configured with the correct IP address details, default gateway etc and you should be able to connect ok over wifi. Obviously make sure the server and your laptop are on the same wi-fi too 👍
@@gerardobrien its a great lab, I think the thing in seconion is that it is just like another siem from a provider, that has all in one caracteristics, so the learning curve is very large, more than just another open source software. So if you choose it, you wouldnt be able to change, or it will be very hard. I decided to leave it and use the rest of tools that you describe here just because integrations with seconion were so hard to maintain that we lost a lot of time in that. I hope that you can show the rules and decoders that its a very interesting part of wazuh
Good evening dear my qualification is 12 SSC I ready CCNA exam qulfe pass the working in hotel department maintenance 3:27 electrician do possible job apply please guide me
Hey mate yea you should be able to do this, it's within the network preferences section of VMware workstation... Check out the very first video on my channel, I made a walk through of exactly this 👍
Hey. Gerard I have issue with pfsense on the repos 13.00 i only have two files FreeBSD.conf and pfsense.conf am i missing something Great work enjoying this project
Hi Gerard - This was a great series and I was able to follow along all the way. Built the whole thing on 1 HP Elitedesk G4 mini with 2 x 1TB nvme and 32GB RAM. I can't run all VMs at once, but I rarely would need to. I went with cloudflare for DDNS because I already had a domain there. I also added rules in pfsense that blocked all traffic in the lab from reaching the rest of my home network. If you did that, I missed it somehow. Thanks for making these! I look forward to playing in the lab I now have. I'd like to sort out how to expand the lab network to the other proxmox nodes in my cluster. That'd let me spread the VMs around a bit.
