The purpose of the channel is to provide an insight into the daily life of a busy chimney sweep. I am a British chimney sweep and work on, clean and maintain all types of fireplaces and stoves found in the uk.
I intend to provide entertaining channel where you will get to see how I work on the different appliances. I will share tips on how to operate clean and maintain your own appliance and hopefully learn something new on the way.
Thank you for stopping by and I hppe you enjoy watching me work.
@@ParaBellum2024 yes me too. However this stove isn't heavily used. Most of the soot will fall into the sump outside. All of this was considered before I went ahead. 👍
I used the viper, and it is quicker however, with rotary it seems to do a better job for the customer after using the viper i used power sweeping and got a lot more out that the viper missed.it's giving a bit of rotary scrub as to say. I paid £290 for a big button lock 10m set, had them for years now.
The Viper takes getting used to and it’s not for everyone. Over the years I’ve owned a half dozen of vipers and never liked them. They would break all the time, jam and expensive, that’s why I no longer use them. However they do have their place in some sticky situations, especially if you want the job to go quick. Thank you for the video!
@@TomBramall honestly. I don't think it will be doable. High chanch of ruining or losing your gear in there if there's no proper access. Have you asked on any of the sweep Facebook pages? I'd be interested to hear what other Sweeps do.
been looking forward to this , good to watch, but I am still not sure its for me, although its making the sweep much quicker i suppose , and thats a brucey bonus 😄
@@mazman8343 yes. Mainly rotary for me but I got the Viper as it's quick and there are some with long 90 degree bends where the Viper seems to win. Sometimes.
Great videos! Do you do video inspections of the flues when you’ve completed the Sweep? It would be very interesting to see a chimney brick/tile/SS flue video inspection video. Do you also do clothes dryer vents? Thank you!
@@akaredcrossbow I only camera the flues if I suspect there is a problem, I am asked to or if I've removed bricks/nest material. The dryer vent cleaning isn't a thing in the UK as far as I'm aware. Definitely not near me.
@@thechimneyman-uk Thank you for the reply! I don’t know how common tumble dryers are there, but dryer vent cleanings are definitely something you should look into doing. They are a good source of money for the time you spend doing them, plus you basically already have all the equipment to handle those kinds of jobs. All you would need is thinner rods and smaller cleaning brushes. There is no need to really take apart the dryer, that’s the appliance person job, all you would be doing is the vent and it’s an all year round job. Great for fill in work too. 👍🏻👍🏻
@@akaredcrossbow no worries. Generally in the housing we have tumble dryers vent pretty much straight outside from the back of the dryer. Mine for instance only has a few inches of pipe. Maybe in an apartment block this may be a thing but I can't say there are any near me or any I've been asked to do. This may be a thing in bigger cities I'm not sure. It's an interesting option though. Maybe worth exploring. 👌
@@banzaiman1 hi, not sure to be honest. They are clean burning, bits are cheap enough. Just a bit tricky to work on. They need cleaning thoroughly every year.
I'm refurbing my own right now, and this is one of the jobs so your video is perfect because I was just about to buy heat-proof tape. I hadn't realised about the air gap - thank you 👍 Now... to work out what the brass dial on the front does and how to free it up...
you certainly earnt your money on this one!!! great video & great patients for explaining as you went along working away, this one was really a beast , and i think other sweeps would have walked away from this , but you did it!! 😎
@@thechimneyman-uk sneak up to check on us 😄, at the moment very quite, but hopefully that will change but the weather is odd and people are still using their fires 😬
@@cooking23 yes some still have the fires on. I had mine going last weekend. People will be looking for Sweeps soon enough. Make sure you are findable 👌
that Rayburn was an absolute fire risk, i am amazed at how the customer thought it was okay to carry on using it and not have a fire!! no doubt you told him off his errors, and he was thankful and gave you a big tip 🤗🤑👍
I always cleaned out the ashes first, removed the baffle and closed the door. Then went on the roof, removed the head and used a round chimney sweep, re-installed the head. Went back inside and cleaned all the black crustys' out putting the baffle back in, done. Using it 24/7 during the winter I always had to clean it out at least once mid-season, you know it needed it when you open the door to add more wood and some smoke comes out into the room.
@@thechimneyman-uk In mine after removing the baffle, there still remains multiple air introduction pipes in the way of accessing the chimney from the bottom. So you must go from the roof into the chimney with extensions to get all the way down to those pipes from the top side thus causing all the black soot to fall into the wood burning area between those pipes. Do this with the door shut so all the dust stays inside and has settled by the time you get back down to clean out the soot.
@@DrHarryT yes there are a few stoves here that are designed with little or no access to sweep through the stove. Usually other access has been provided. We don't typically go on roofs here but sometimes there's no other way. 👍
I use a combo of strip and small magnets. Its never completely sealed and never leaks. Different setups for different appliences, always works. Comes with experience. Great vid. Sweep on!
I’m a big fan of the magnets. Saves me a fortune on taping up! I put a bit of shoe lace in the holes at the ends, far easier when it comes to taking them off again 👍🏻
Just found your channel and I'm in Virginia USA. I've had a couple of fireplaces but never used them as a heat source and the houses were always new construction...but your work is interesting and you're obviously a fine craftsman and businessman too. Keep up the good videos.
I know a sweep who still insists on sweeping with the top down method I know it occasionally has its place but every job he manually sweeps top down then wastes a whole bin liner plus duct tape to seal off the fireplace or stove. Just needless hardship and risk climbing up on roofs all day .
36:00 I've recently started using a Siligun to do my rope seals I find it very useful. Nice and compact it has a anti drip feature so no more expensive silicone is wasted.
Yeah of course cheers I have some perlon rotary brush heads for delicate lime mortar rendered flues and some stiff tamar heads . But them mini moles for liners I can't see wait use it would be . Is it for poor condition flexi liners ? Thanks again great channel 👍
@@danbreen1916 your right either will do the job. One client I have has a liner which is at quite a shallow angle at one point. Almost a flat spot due to the design of the chimney the liner is in. Because of that soot tends to sit there. The whip head will move the soot about but doesn't move it down the liner. The mole will drag it down as it fills the liner better. It's much like how a mole will remove soot from the bends in a brick chimney more efficiently than a whip. Also moles last a while so it saves on replacing worn out whip line.
i think you will find that a lot of people in the USA & Canada sweep there own flues, some of the videos on RU-vid are horrendous, no PPE worn and no sheeting up either, and it always appears to be about saving money, 🤨 the only people I've met who sweep there own are canal boaters, they use the very old fashioned toilet brush 😝, although I did sweep a boat chimney due to the creosote build up, due to the ill effects it had on the owner, Martin from NACS has asked me to do a write for the magazine, 🤓
Hi great video, what are you using to chamfer the bricks please and is this the herald mark 1 stove? Mine also had a firebrick in the roof which has broken so I take it I should get the baffle plate that you replaced it with? Many thanks lance
@@thechimneyman-uk thank you very much, I have just ordered a metal throat plate but the guy thinks my stove is the herald 14 yet it is the same as yours?
