Film makers, fans and watchers have many questions about CGI and VFX in their favourite movies. ➡️If you're interesting in learning about why certain VFX look good or bad, why they were used, and why we don't see practical effects anymore , you’ve come to the right place.
I’ve been studying and working in VFX for several years, and want to create discussions on VFX quality, styles, practices and show behind the curtain of VFX.
I've seen so many of my favourite franchises ruined by poor VFX. ➡️ But so much cool VFX often gets overlooked in the discussion about CGI. I’m currently sharing the specific actions VFX studios take to make good and bad VFX, one video at a time.

Apparently, the lady on the stairase wasn't part of the movie. in the beginning, they hit her, and she played the part because apparently she is an actress too, so they added her to the movie!
The Thing from john Carpenter is the other "most alien, alien". It was chaotic but also warped anything it could copy far beyond anything we can relate with on Earth. Not only it built tension like no other movies could but when The Thing was revealing itself, it did in the most alien way possible by not showing its true self but by absolutely corrupting anything it came across in the most lethal and grotesque way possible. Master piece i can't watch today because that "Thing" scarred me for life.
Even with all of the tricks you mentioned here, I find it almost impossible to imagine how they pulled this off. Everything from the model, to the textures, to the shaders, to the lighting - it just looks so, so incredibly good... **2006!** Most of us still had CRT TVs! Elder Scrolls Oblivion wasn't even out yet! Your average PC had 1 core, and ran Windows XP! How did they pull this off! How does it look so good! It boggles the mind
It definitely felt like watching an fps video game movie when I saw it with my brother. I don't think it was my favorite movie, partly because the plot also felt like it was from a video game, but given what Hollywood has been pumping out it lately it was not a bad way to spend 90 minutes.
I just watched a video about feather stars and this video came up in the algorithm - the similarities between the two creatures are uncanny! It's hard to believe that one of them is real and the other is completely made up.
I personally think films look better when there is a mixture of practical and CGI effects mixed together... As you said in this video, the practical FX are routed in the real environments, CGI can then be used to enhance this... Another film which utilises a healthy mixture of CGI and practical is Terminator 2... There is SO many practical effects which have been enhanced by CGI, the film looks amazing, and has stood up time for over 30 years! Jurassic Park (the original) - again, a perfect balance of practical and computer generated visuals. I feel that films today JUST opt for the CGI as they can look cleaner, more technically correct etc... But taking the practical approach gives the film a level of realism CGI CANNOT give alone!
Unironically Hardcore Henry is one of my favorite movies of all time. It has its flaws but when you are on its crazy rollercoaster you just enjoy its crazy ride and every second is just fun insanity. Finding out how much blood, sweat and tears went into it only makes me love it more.
"highly unorthodox"? Spielberg has been combining animatronics with CGI since 1993. Animatronics + CG overlay have been the gold-standard for lifelike CG in films since Jurassic Park.
I can see why this movie didn't do well it was due to lacl of music and set pieces had a wierd grey filter nd cruise was under utilised still it was a great movie good to this day I'm waiting for a decent video game adaptation
GoPro quality really helps it to look real and somehow unbelievable at the same time, but in a good way. Also what kind of a gamer are you if you haven't watched Hardcore.
Hardcore henry should be regarded in the film industry as a gold standard in taking a major leap forward in a completely new way of storytelling and action. The method of first person films should be explored and perfected
I saw this on cinema when it first came out. I was so impressed that I convinced all my friends and collegues to make a watch party so everyone could experience true filmmaking
I find it interesting that the director of this movie, Ilya Naishuller, also has a band called Biting Elbows. They made the song Bad Motherfucker which appeared in a Payday 2 dlc trailer in which you could play as Jimmy, there were also a couple of heists inspired from the film called the "Hardcore Henry" heists.
All the people in Spider-man 1 and 2 screaming so unnaturally threw me out of immersion much more than any bad CGI. Those screams were ridiculous, no better word for it.
