There is no sound. Filmed with a cine camera. Sound in those days required a seperate piece of equipment.

This is brilliant footage, huge thanks. I’ve run and biked the Incline a few times over the decades, and although the historical descriptions along the route are really well done, this helps to fill in the gaps. It can’t have been that pleasant inside the tunnels for the passengers during the big grind up!

The embonpoint of these women! Enormous! A glimpse of my great-grandmothers! And to think of the boy-skinny flat-chested fashion of the 1920s! Goodness! Very enjoyable, this.

Surprised there were no dialogue captions to this film.Still, it was easy enough to follow. Interesting piece of cinema history.

Seemed entertaining enough, but had no idea what was going on let alone the moral of the story….

It's a great walk. It took four steam engines to lug those carriages up and two diesel electric which managed twice the speed and a fraction of the pollution.

My Grandfather would have been only 16 in 1912. I wonder if he went to movies. There were a ton of things I could/should have asked him. But I never did...

What year was this taken in?
@kiwitrainguy
@kiwitrainguy Месяц назад
Probably 1955 the last year that the incline worked. Judging by the gorse in full bloom, it was spring time. The incline closed in October 1955.

Lots of good slapstick comedy. Delightful old film! I had music playing in my head as I watched😅😊😂❤

I must admit that when I played to my family I had some other slapstick comedy music playing - and of course the sound magically lined up and really added to it. Thanks for watching, it seems this is the only copy around!

Go to it, Patsy, use that rolling pin! (Or Matilda, haven't finished it yet.) Was the guy named "Pat" for "Patsy"? Very fun to watch.
@tetotarafilms

That is Matilda with the rolling pin - Patsy is the male lead played by Horace Davies. I can't find much more about him - Live in LA, 1889-1970, stared in 5 films!

My terrible GPT translation of the titles would be: "MARINE-flitsen 1 Aug--Dec. 1939". Marine glimpses, there must be a better way to say this in English? Eenheden van het "ESKADER" - Units of the "SQUADRON" Hooge vart - This seems like an old or incorrect spelling, possibly meant to be "Hoge vaart" which translates to "High speed" Paravaanoefening - Paravane Exercise (A paravane is a device used for cutting submarine cables or mines) Sleepmanoeuvre - Towing Manoeuvre Vertrek vice admiraal H.Ferwerda Tg.Priok - Departure of Vice Admiral H.Ferwerda To Priok (Tg. could stand for "naar" which means "to" in Dutch, and Priok likely refers to Tanjung Priok, the main harbor in Jakarta, Indonesia) Lichtspoormunitie - Tracer Ammunition Werkzaamheden - Activities or Operations Hr. Ms. “De Ruyter” catapulteert en vliegtuig - HNLMS "De Ruyter" catapults an airplane (Hr. Ms. stands for "Harer Majesteits" which translates to "Her Majesty's" and is used for ships in the Royal Netherlands Navy) Er komt meer - There is more (indicating additional content or segments follow) - there is more, but it's not naval.

I think my Mum was on the last run over the incline. She lived in Kahutara for a while while my Grandfather (Manager of MacDuffs wgtn) recovered from a crash on 30 June 1944 in a D H Dragon ZK AHT passenger plane on the bush slopes of Mount Hope near Kawatiri.

Really great to see this as Dad ( Leslie George Raikes) was Station Master in Featherston in about 1963, and it was a bonus to see Kaitoke also as my Grandfather (Leslie Dewson Raikes )was Station Master Kaitoke and Grandma operated the tea room there.

Yes it is a bit fast - this was the first off a new scanner I'd built so it could have done with a bit attention to correcting playback speed!

This sighting of Kaitoke Railway station was interesting to me as my grandfather was stationmaster there and he got the Queens medal when her train passed through. My grandmother operated the tea rooms there. Also to see Featherston was great as Dad was Station Master there in 1963.

The light coloured car is a 1946 Chevrolet and it looks pretty new so 1946/47 at a guess. Note the split back window on the Chev which was a feature of Australian production. The aeroplane is an Avro 691 Lancastrian, 91 examples were built with the original batch being converted from surplus Lancaster heavy bombers and the later batches being new builds. Qantas did operate a small number and this is clearly one of their ones.
