I remember when Pokemon cards first came out, and I was so excited every time my parents bought me a pack to open. If only I would've kept those cards! Now, Pokemon is one of my biggest hobbies. Now, I'm tracking the Pokemon Markets, Figuring out the best (and worst!) ways to be a Pokemon Collector and Pokemon Investor.
Videos come out on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Livestreams are typically every second Friday @ 4pm PST / 7pm EST.
Hi Colin, my fellow Canadian friend, the spreadsheet totally makes sense, however, you didn’t factor in the print runs, which greatly impacts the market prices. Team Up had a super limited print run with many desirable cards, just like Evolving Skies. I seriously don’t think the same strategy applies to Scarlet & Violet. Of course they will see growth over time, but the market has been diluted so much since SM/SS era and it’s extremely hard for any new individual card to see that kind of growth in the future.
I don’t think I ever said you’re going to see the same growth as SM or SWSH era. I said that every booster box is going to make it to MSRP or higher, which is a good investment when you’re buying boxes at $100
Where does someone find a booster box for 100$? Granted I'm fairly new, but they all seems to be 150+ CAD shipping included. Or are your prices in USD, which means 137CAD per box?
Yes these are usd. Can definitely find booster boxes for $140 CAD. Quite a few online stores, and join the Canadian Facebook groups to find these deals

@ThePokeOffice hi! I just started like 4 months ago to collect pokemon. So far I'm completing S&Sh set of etb's. After I'm thinking of getting all bb. So what i wanna ask you. Would you buy for 2400$ the whole set of s&sh bb or would you invest 2400$ into s&v bb?
Nice video man iv been putting away boxes of each SV set wish I had of done it from sun and moon man I ripped a lot of packs back then I actually brought a psa 7 magikarp last night in Japanese for $42 Because I really wanted the card and here in Australia the raw English copy is going for $220-$250 I’m hoping it will come down eventually but not paying that much for it raw not atm at least lol
Honestly, I don't like the sets in Scarlet and Violet. I do like 151 but that's the set that got me back in to cards, well that and the chase Charizard from Obsidian Flames. The gamestop close to my house was selling Crown Zenith ETB's for $63 Canadian. I couldn't resist. I bought some. The truth is that I will likely open most of the ETB's I purchased with my kids. When they're not with me, I'm disciplined but i love the look on their faces when they pull something great.
You always hear now is the time to buy...well 2 months ago was definitely the biggest time. There were so many deals on sealed product and certain singles were decent price. Someone could have doubled to tripled there $ within 2 months. Maybe even 4x. So many deals have dwindled away and singles have blown up.
My friends have asked me about Pokemon investing and hopping in on it and I’ve told them it’s nothing like investing in the stock market even though it seems like it and this is exactly why lmao. So hard to hold and not open
GREAT ADVICE. I am fairly new to pokemon. Love ripping packs. But starting listening to you and a few others on RU-vid. Want to invest. Started realizing booster boxes are the way to go. This is exactly what I wanted to hear.
You only profit if you sell. You may want to factor in selling fees, taxes, etc into your profit estimations. Not to mention you would had to have bought at the best time for each set, and held for five years. Close to no one actually did that. I’m all for the collecting/investing discussion, but the realities of selling things should be included.
Agree, I love the poke investing scene and enjoy channels like Colin’s, PK’s, Nomics etc, but they rarely mention the actual selling side. I think it’s because the selling isnt too difficult. These products are super liquid.
@@JoshGreaves-or1wy oh yeah, I totally agree everything is super liquid right now. I enjoy all of the content as well by them. I just think that people should be more transparent. For example, if your $90-100 booster box goes to $200. In theory you doubled your money, but after taxes, selling fees, shipping etc it will more likely be 1.5 times your money. Then you have to weigh how long that money was stagnant. Just a lot of nuance that could be touched on.
I agree with you, except the returns. I wouldn’t do a return on a private sale. And to be fair, I’ve made plenty of sales through Facebook groups where there are no fees. Managing a stock account takes time, energy, and knowledge as well. And upstanding citizens should report taxes on all investments so that ones a bit of a wash. Agreed tho, there’s another whole video to be made about selling for profit 👍
@@ThePokeOffice Fair. For stocks, I use an index fund (person & Roth IRA). Does not require any time, energy, or knowledge. Put it all on auto pay and your money grows with the entire stock market, not from stock picking which is very risky.
I like the strategy, it’s better than putting money aside and depositing it in a savings account to accumulate a handful of dollars for the same amount of time with the laughable rate most banks are willing to provide.
I do just this. Every time a new set comes out I buy a case. Try to keep the price under $600. Sometimes if there's a set I really like I might buy two cases. Then I set it and forget it!
Sell at 80% market price, take your 240% gains, and you’ll still be loving life. I’ve sold plenty on fb groups and it’s not difficult with booster boxes
For those who may be interested; Target just restocked chilling reign ETBs for 39.99 “ both types “ in my opinion that’s a strong hold that will definitely go up in time after their no longer available of course.
My Top 3 of SV: 1) 151 (god pack) 2) Paldea E (Fishing with Wifu) 3) Twilight (Greninja) Great video. Yes everything is going up with Pokemon! The children who loved gambling have grown up and already passed it on to their lil children too. The money is there.
You aren’t accounting for fees, shipping, etc..Outside of huge increases, still safer to invest in other things. You buy a box for $100, sell it for $300.. depending where you sell it.. you’re losing at least 10-30% on fees and shipping costs (even if you sell it in person, most people only paying 70-80% of value for cash). You’re maybe making 100$-150$? And that’s if it appreciates to 300+ On top of that You had to plant your money there for years, have storage to keep it, and you need to be able to sell the product to realize the gains. Not saying you won’t be making money .. but all these videos try and hype up numbers that aren’t real. This is no different than the made 7 figures selling Pokemon cards.. leaving out that they only profited 7% from it, and .. just misleading .. especially when they had to spend 7 figures for product lol
So, I agree with some of what you’ve said. This is also not my only retirement investing vehicle, so I have money in other stuff too. This is first and foremost a hobby for me. If you gain 300%, sell for 80%, you have still gained 240% so that’s better than most “safer” stocks are going to do. Everything takes time to see gains. The whole video was based on holding for 5-7 years. If you want to see gains, you’ve typically got to plant your money somewhere. Storage is a legitimate issue for people. But this is still a great way to make solid gains and grow your collection / investment in my opinion
@@Alflloyd64 my point is the it’s misleading in regards to how great it is. You’re not actually making 8k off the 3k investment. Take that 8k and subtract fees, shipping, and taxes ( which you technically paid twice, once to purchase the product and again on the sale/gains). You could easily be at 5k take home. That’s also assuming you get 100% of market value, which again is rare cause in order to offload something like this you’re constantly being undercut, so you at one point have to be one of the lowest out there in order to sell. Additionally you now need space in a climate controlled area to pile 5 years worth of booster boxes.. you also have to actually be able to sell the product, either build a reputation where people are comfortable buying 300+% upcharges on items or consign it which takes a cut of the sale. I have vintage slabs on eBay that have sat there for months, and I’ve decreased the prices like 3-4 times, sent out offers for discount and they don’t move. I can look at my TCG player where I’ve sold a couple hundred dollars this year, and lost over a hundred in fees, and it does not count for the cost of the product, shipping materials, postage, etc.. it’s a fun side thing that without having deep connections to get product below going rates, a ton of free capital to add to the hobby, etc.. it essentially subsidizes the hobby a bit.. but definitely not getting rich off it like a lot of the poke invest in RU-vid space gives people the illusion of. Traditional investment strategies allow you to be far more liquid (access to the money), allow for compounding interest, and has no storage necessities with guaranteed safety of your money up to a certain amount.. even if your house gets flooded or catches on fire or a kid accidentally knocks them over or opens them, etc. This is a fun side thing, just be careful of the people telling you you’ll be rich or it’s guaranteed money
I agree. It IS that simple. If you have trouble keeping things sealed, buy pristine/mint condition sealed products so that it'll discourage you from opening it.
While I believe theirs more complexities to this than the video showed, the point of buying all sets over time is to allow for a few losses cause you will possibly hit on others. Usually the losses aren’t going down to 0$ so if you lost let’s say 50$ a box on those two sets but all other sets appreciated in value, you’d still make money over all.
